Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.

In Love With Gloves

January 27th, 2009 @ 4:49 pm by Mrs. Perfume

In Love With Gloves : wedding etiquette Gloves My 1940s elbow-length gloves

My very simple dress needs a little something extra. There will be brooches and sparkly bits, but the one thing that I think will make it all that much more special is a pair of gloves. Gloves are undoubtedly old school. They add an air of dignity to the occasion… and I will likely never wear occasion gloves again. And when I say wedding gloves, I’m thinking a little less lacey Madonna/cotillion and more Jackie O:

Actually, even better, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy:

Carolyn’s now iconic simple Narcisso Rodriquez sheath dress was elegantly dressed up with GORGEOUS, sheer, elbow length gloves! Though her evening ceremony was more casual, the gloves made it more of a special occasion. An event.

Not many people wear wedding gloves these days, but some designers are showcasing them, and I think it’s a nice trend.

A little glove etiquette brought to you by brideandgroom.com:

Glove etiquette is a reflection of the times. Historically, the length of the glove was directly related how formal the affair and the time of day. Glove lengths range from 1-button, ending at the wrist, to 20-button, ending at the shoulder. The length you choose should complement your sleeve length. Generally, the shorter the sleeve, the longer the glove—a sleeveless or strapless gown would dictate a glove that comes to the upper arm. During the exchanging of rings, you may either remove the glove from the left ring finger by slitting the fabric underneath and lifting it over the finger or you may choose to remove the glove altogether. If you remove the glove, simply give it to the maid of honor at the same time you pass your bouquet. At the reception, your gloves should be kept on in the receiving line and for special dances with your groom and your father. As it is never acceptable to eat or drink while wearing gloves, you should remove your gloves before cutting your wedding cake. As the more formal aspects of your wedding are now complete, you may wish to take off your gloves, relax, and enjoy your party!

Are you considering wearing gloves for some portion of your wedding day?

I’m wearing ivory cashmere gloves when outside @ the reception….my mom’s gloves were too small, and I couldn’t justify another “wear one day only” purchase

FI wants me to wear gloves. I don’t think it would look right with our beach wedding, but I may surprise him if I find the right ones.

love, love, love the look!

And… if they reach your elbows, make sure you scrunch them, do NOT pull them over your elbow - for fashion’s sake.

They are so pretty! I don’t think I’ll be wearing gloves. They don’t really go with the informality of our affair, but I still think they are beautiful!

Miss Perfume, your taste is exquisite! Although, I would love to wear gloves, I certainly can’t pull it off. All the elements of your wedding are so classy and I can’t wait to see it all come together!

Your chic sense of style is really showing in your posts! I can’t wait to see your wedding!!

I think long, thin leather gloves are really beautiful, and will probably be shopping for a white pair to wear at some point for our January wedding day, but not in the ceremony. More for traveling around and whatnot. :) I love gloves, though. :)

I LOVE gloves! I really wanted my bridesmaids to wear them, but I think they might veto me!

I really really really want gloves! I’m getting married in november but am probably wearing a strapless dress so gloves would be practical as well as pretty!

You are just so classy Perfume, your posts just blow me away. Your wedding is going to be so gorgeous, even this (small) detail posts have me really excited. And I was hoping to swear off of Weddingbee at some point in my life. If people like you keep writing it will never be possible!

I’m not having a wedding technically, but a renewal of vows to make up for the fact that I never had a wedding. It’s a garden party theme in the beginning of July, so hot. My dress is casual and flimsy, but to make the ring ceremony more special I will be wearing gloves ala Jackie-O. I think the wrist gloves are sweet and add just a touch of elegance. In my grandmothers day, she said it was looked down on not to wear gloves to your wedding, and if you could afford it, to have them for your entire wedding party, men and women. Good luck in your quest for the perfect glove, I know I’m still looking.
