Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!

Color Inspirations

Black and Pink:

I love this color combination! It’s retro and sweet, but not overly so. I especially love those light pink anemone flowers on the top left—they are so different! I never thought we would want to incorporate pink into our wedding, but I think the black really balances it out so that it’s not too sugary. If we chose this palette I would add a chic black sash to my wedding dress to tie it all together. But is pink and black overdone? And is it fitting for a wedding by the sea? Hmmm

Sapphire, Turquoise and Chartreuse:

This was our initial color combination, inspired by the tropical ocean views at our ceremony and reception venue (fourth row, first picture). I like these colors because they seem pretty natural for a seaside affair like mine.

I don’t know if I have just gotten bored with them or what, but somehow I don’t find them that exciting anymore. It may have something to do with the fact that the black sash I want to add to my wedding dress won’t really tie in well with these colors (black and dark blue just don’t match! I don’t care what people say!).

Or maybe they are too obvious for a seaside wedding? I love the fact that we are getting married on a deck overlooking the Caribbean, but the ocean doesn’t need to define every aspect of our wedding. Perhaps we need to incorporate colors other than blue so they don’t blend in with the ocean.

Aqua and Poppy:

Okay, okay, it’s aqua and red. But Martha Stewart Weddings calls it “Aqua and Poppy”, which I find much more appealing. See, “poppy” is like “red”, except that it is much more glamorous and interesting. Now that we are in agreement that this is CLEARLY “poppy”, isn’t this color palette cute? I have seen it on several wedding websites, but I’ve never seen it done in real life. It is certainly a bold color combination, and one would have to be careful to ensure that it didn’t come off too “4th of July”, but I think it’s really interesting! And neither of these color combinations clashes with the black sash that I plan to have on my dress, so it gets bonus points for that too.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Which one should we choose?

I’ve ALWAYS loved the aqua and poppy color scheme and a lil’ regretful that I didn’t go that route. It you choose the color pallet I can live vicariously through you. :)

Ditto. I love the aqua and poppy, but it’s too close to the scarlet and cornflower that my friend just did. We’re going with black, silver, and ice blue- for now. I’m just as indecisive!

I voted for the Aqua and Poppy combo but I also love Aqua and Orange/peachy colors for a beach wedding! I am pretty sure Snippet and Ink has a board with those colors. I am doing turquoises and greens for my beach wedding but was very tempted with the aquas and oranges.

I love the pops of red contrasting with a smooth light blue! You’d have mulitple something(s) blue with the second or third option.

It’s no surprise I love bright colors — our wedding is based around orange and purple, accented with red and light green.

Aqua and poppy are pretty, but I feel like they’re a little overdone. I love love love pink and black and wanted that to be my color scheme, but I didn’t think it was right for my autumn wedding. I would stick with your original plan. It’s really lovely. The perfect elegant twist to a beach wedding.

I’m doing aqua and poppy and it’s my favorite color combo. But I secretly fell in love with your pink black and white board… I feel like a traitor! I think anything can mesh with your beachy theme as long as your throw some shells or something in with it. Best of luck!

Red is one of my favorite colors, and with aqua it’s just so fresh and so summer. But I love the pink and black as well, it’s very vintage.

I love the pink & black, but think the aqua and poppy would be stunning for a beach wedding!

Aqua and poppy!

Also–do you know who makes that dress on your 2nd board in the top R, the blue one??

@Miss Dumpling: I love those anemones, too! I originally wanted actual red poppies in the wedding, but now I’m thinking anemones will hold up better. They’re like poppy’s stronger twin ;)

I love your board for Aqua and Poppy… it’s not quite red but more of a coral and I think it makes the color combo even prettier :)

You can borrow my colors! Add to the cameo pink and black, some shimmery aqua! They look fantastic together.

Good inspiration boards. I’ve made some too. Check them out. A few pages back on the blog. You can see how the aqua goes with the cameo pink. Using the black as base color. BM dresses will be the LBD!

I love Aqua and Poppy - especially that Indian wedding! It was probably second one my list of wedding color combinations. Still thinking about using it somewhere in the wedding celebrations - bridal shower maybe? Kitchen inspiration to base our registry on?

I voted for Aqua and Poppy for you, even though our color scheme is very similar to the Pink and Black one (we’re doing Pink and Dark Grey!). I think it would be PERFECT for a near-the-beach wedding, especially with that red coral, which you should totally put on your invites.

I went through the same thing you are. Picked blues that fit with our DW/beach wedding but it didn’t seem to have the ‘POP’ I wanted. Saw a pink and orange color scheme and I was in love!

I say go for the blue/poppy one. It has that ‘POP’ that really stands out in pictures. ;)

I love the pink and black!!! The soft shade of pink and the black really balance each other out. And I think the fact that those two colors are so different from your caribbean background that it will make both really stand out! Plus, I’m also in love with those anemones!
