Eton Suit for the Ring Bearer

January 28th, 2009 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. Perfume

The other weekend when I was at the dress shop getting my dress hemmed, I found a hand-made ivory organza smocked flower girl dress. But the dress shop didn’t have much in the way of boys attire… only black and white tuxes. The shop lady, understanding a little bit about the vintage nuttiness I’m going for, suggested a light colored shirt and tan trousers for our little ring bearer. Almost, but not quite. And since I insist that my groom not wear his tux, I was in a bit of a dilemma for the ring bearer.

That is, until I saw these stylized wool ETON SUITS (school boy uniform-esque/short pant suit named for the English boarding school where they were popularized in the 19th century) on Martha Stewart Weddings.

I’d like something similar in navy, ivory, linen or even seersucker. Source

They’re definitely a throw-back to a bygone era. Only toddlers wear them now. But at a certain point in recent history, older boys wore these as school uniforms (until they reached 5’4″ tall, at which time they wore the long pant suit).

Now, to find one for a modern-day seven-year-old…

Did you find it hard to dress the ring bearer? Where did you find your ring bearer’s suit?

Oooh…those wool suits are so adorable!

We had “vintage” ring bearer outfits too…one of my MOH’s husband was a ring bearer with his brother when they were little and his mom had the matching velvet suits preserved and let us borrow them for our wedding. They were so cute in their short pants (they were kind of like jumpers b/c the pants had suspenders). You can see pictures of their outfits here (scroll down to the middle of the page) http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/11/02/kid-friendly-wedding/#more-72250

My nephew was the ringbearer (he was 2 1/2 at the time) at our November wedding. He wore a black velvet eton suit with white knee socks and saddle shoes. It was friggin’ adorable. I am not a fan of the mini-tux - go for the eton suit!

My little brother wore something similar as a ring bearer in a wedding when he was about 6 - a white dress shirt, burgundy suspenders, gray wool shorts (approx. knee-length), grey and burgundy argyle knee socks, and tan suede bucs. If I remember correctly, my mom bought the outfit at Talbot’s Kids?

Yeah, the doll’s a little bit Twilight Zone-esque.

But that’s a really cute idea! Just make sure the fabric’s not too thick so the little boy(s) don’t get too hot!

@jyam: Love your Gromit avatar!

Those Elton suits are too precious! If we were having a ring bearer I would seriously consider those.

I was also looking for something similar to this for our ring bearers, and I came across this site: http://www.theperfectpear.com/store/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details_v3.asp?Shopper_id=90381281214279038&Store_id=429&page_id=23&Item_ID=3969&Parent_Ids=0,%200,18

looks like they have the colors you were looking for!

On top of all the vintage cuteness, Eton Suits are actually the more proper attire for little boys, who are not to be dressed as tiny grown men. Personally, I’ve always thought tuxes make little boys look a little like ventriloquist dummies, and that little mannequin in a tux certainly does not do anything to remedy that notion. I think your ringbearer will be adorable.

We’re renting our little guy’s suit along with the groom’s and the groomsmen. Good luck finding a Eton suit–i think it will look absolutely darling!

If they had to wear them to 5′4 1/2″, then my little brother would be SOL. He’s 19. and about 5′3″-4″ish.

I believe that Talbot’s Kids is no longer in business BUT you should check out Strasburg Children. They have stores and a website. Right now there is a boy’s white eton suit on sale thru January for $76. Their sizes go up to 6 years in that style. Their website is: http://www.strasburgchildren.com Hope you can find what you like. It’s hard to find knee socks for little boys!

I haven’t checked yet, but I’m sure it will be difficult. My FH and groomsmen will be wearing light grey suits, and I don’t know how difficult it is going to be to dress our ring bearer.
