Staying Power!

January 28th, 2009 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. Ballet Flat

I have a problem with makeup. While it looks beautiful upon application, it wears off fast. I’m plagued by oily skin, Louisiana humidity, and the tendency to be overly-emotional. I’m thankful that I’ll have my makeup professionally done on our wedding day, so hopefully that problem won’t be too bad, but I will be enlisting the help of some products to give the makeup that boost to stay on throughout the day!

I would like to mention a HUGE thank you to Makeup Alley. This website is AWESOME (and free). It’s all makeup/beauty products and users review them, listing their age, skin type, what they thought, etc. to give you an idea of if the product might work on you.

First you go to the product review page and you get a search option.

1

Then, you are able to search by category (foundation, eye shadow, etc.), brand name (Maybelline, Smashbox, etc.) and product name (Oil Blotting sheets, Paradise Pink lip gloss, etc.)

From there, you click on your product and you can see a review rating/# of reviewers/percent rating. Then, below it, you can see written reviews!

2

From there, there is a search function in the middle of the page where you can find people like you who have used the product, and get the reviews you want to read. It’s a great website and I recommend it to those looking to revitalize their makeup bag!

Here are some new favorites that I have found!

First of all, despite my highlights, I am a natural blonde. My eyelashes are few and far between (and not to mention, blonde). So, mascara has become a nemesis of mine. I hate clumps and weird brushes, and I can’t justify paying big bucks for something I have to chuck in a few months. So, I found this lash lengthening mascara from Mary Kay for $10, and SERIOUSLY, it has made my eyelashes go va-va-voom all day! No clumps, too!

Like I mentioned, I also have very oily skin. These blotting sheets have been my BFFs since high school, and I swear, this product is a lifesaver from the shinies! It sucks that oil nastiness right up!

4

Softlips is replacing my Chapstick. They have so many yummy flavors and this product just makes my lips feel naturally soft, not like I have a layer of wax on top of them. I love this product, and since it comes tinted, I’m going to invest in this for the big day when the lip gloss wears off!

5

MAC Paint in Bare Canvas is a great eye makeup primer. It matches my fair skin color really well and nothing leaves my eyes or creases weird. So far, this is my number one product and has lasted me almost a year now! I still have over half of a tube left, too!

Model in a Bottle is an all-over face spray. It does feel slightly sticky at first after application, but really, nothing comes off of you with this on. If you are DIYing your makeup and want staying power, this is recommended big time!!

Do you have any makeup products that help to give you the staying power you need on your big day?

My sister won’t let me buy anything unless it’s been well-reviewed on MOA! It’s fantastic!

Regarding your wedding day make-up. I recommend an exfoliation. There are many types. Your skincare person will do what is best for your skin type.

The week of your wedding get a “hyperbaric oxygen infusion treatment”. Your make-up and skin will be flawless! plus it will give you a lift!!!! Have fun!

I’m also getting married in humid weather… I decided to go with airbrush makeup. I did a trial and it lasted all day with few touch-ups. It also didn’t feel as heavy as foundation.

Thanks for the tips! I have issues with my makeup staying and I was worried too since we are having an outdoor wedding in the summertime in a pretty hot location and I have oily skin. Not a good combination!

Blinc mascara — get it. It will change your life. It “tubes” your lashes, so no more smudgy, raccoon eyes. And it’s super easy to remove — just a little water and the tubes slide right off. Angel Swanson turned me onto it, and I haven’t used anything else since.

Makeup Alley is fantastic! There is also a “swap” feature in which you can create a wishlist and a list of products you’re looking to get rid of. From there you can search what others have and what others want and swap!
I’ve had nothing but fantastic experiences with MOA.

you HAVE to try “the present,” by philosophy — it’s amazing! my skin tends to get oily too, but if i use it after my lotion and before i put anything on my face, i stay shine-free for HOURS. it also makes your skin look totally airbrushed and smooths out little wrinkles/imperfections, and feels like you’re wearing nothing. a little bit goes a long way. i definitely recommend it, it’s one of my absolute favorite make-up products.

oh and it gives your makeup amazing staying power — no smudges or smears — even after hours dancing at a club. :) sorry, i sound like a philosophy spokesperson but it’s just a really amazing product and it’s changed my life, lol!

bare minerals makeup. it’s amazing. i got married outside, in august, in north carolina…and i maybe powdered my nose once? it stayed perfect. i used a MAC primer underneath, too, which was also great.

I love Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. It evens out your skin texture, and makes your skin feel baby soft. The only drawback is it’s hard to use with my BareEscentuals, I prefer to use it with a liquid or matte foundation.

I agree with the Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer review!! I bought it after I saw the reviews on MUA!! i LOVE it! It really has the staying power!! I also have the MAC Paint in Bare Canvas and I have to say that the Urban Decay has much better staying power… but MUA is awesome!

i think softlips makes your lips more chapped, but i love it anyway. i always use it before i put on lipliner because i have the most chapped lips on earth. cool cherry is my favorite flavor, although i recently bought honeydew and that’s nice too! :)

You may also want to try MAC’s oil control lotion. I’ve got very oily skin and used to always have my makeup run off within an hour or two of me putting it on. But now that I started using the lotion (a very small amount, about 1/3 of a dime) my makeup lasts a LONG time and even once the makeup no longer appears on my face the lotion is still working so I don’t have those disgusting oil slicks all over my face (and thus preventing the need to carry around blotting sheets). And I’m a twenty-something who lives in New Orleans to boot, so I know the humidity issues.
