Destination Hawaii

January 29th, 2009 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Piglet

I am a beach baby. I LOVE the beach and all things tropical. Papa Pig was actually born in Honolulu, and his entire family still lives on the island. Growing up as a military brat, we were fortunate to be able to spend two years in Guam, which I consider to be a miniature, less commercialized version of Hawaii. I’ve always known I wanted to have a destination wedding. The one setback was knowing that some of our family might not be able to attend. To remedy this, we decided to hold our wedding and ceremony on the island of Oahu, and hold a second reception locally in Baltimore, Maryland. We researched a ton on TheKnot Hawaii community boards (thank you Hawaii Knotties!) and our top contenders for the wedding ceremony/reception were:

  • Hale Koa - budget friendly, military hotel. Since the Hale Koa Hotel is a federal entity, prices would not be subject to the 4.7% sales tax. There’s a garden area were we could host our ceremony, but we really wanted an oceanfront ceremony. How could we go to Hawaii and not have an ocean backdrop? This was our first choice for the reception, but the aesthetic of the room wasn’t quite what we were looking for and it was without windows. Being a military hotel, brides do require sponsorship in order to host an event at their facility.

  • Waimanalo Bay - Mr. P and I have visited Hawaii twice in the five years we’ve dated. Hands down, this is our favorite beach. It’s private with a long stretch of sand that could accommodate our guest count. We found out shortly after our engagement that new laws in Hawaii were passed requiring permits for beach weddings. Professional photographers would also require permits under certain circumstances. Given that we were planning a wedding from across the globe and did not hire a wedding planner, we opted to seek other options.
  • Kahala Hotel & Resort - beautiful, but didn’t work within our budget. They were also charging an additional fee if we brought in our own photographer rather than using one of their preferred vendors.

We ultimately decided to hold our ceremony at Lanikuhonua, a private estate, approximately 40 mi. outside of Waikiki, and our reception will be at the Moana Surfrider. They’re both absolutely gorgeous. Here’s the kicker: August is a toasty time of year and Lanikuhonua only had morning and daytime slots available for our ceremony. I’m very sensitive to heat. I’m typically semi-dripping with sweat. As such, we are doing the unthinkable and holding a morning ceremony with an evening reception. It’s island casual in the morning, and the evening reception will be a bit more formal.

Is anyone else planning their wedding with a large gap between the ceremony and reception? What recommendations are you offering to your guests to occupy their time in the interim?

I grew up on Guam. Guam would be a wonderful place to have a wedding if the flights to get there weren’t so expensive.

Haha, not a large gap like yours — just about two and a half hours so we can squeeze in more pictures, and let our guests went their way to the reception location (and find parking). But, your site is bee-you-tee-ful! :-) Can’t wait to hear more about it — especially your more formal evening reception (which is what we’re going for, only not in Hawaii!).

The wedding is going to be gorgeous! Plus a gap can’t be too bad when you have the beach as an option for the in between time!

How about a boat cruise? You could have a light lunch and drinks.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind the gap between the ceremony and reception! It gives guests time to do what they want - go to the beach, pool, sleep, excursion, whatever!

I’m so uber jealous! My FI and I L.O.V.E. Hawaii!!! We’re hoping to move there in the next year which is what’s holding us up from setting a date… I’m excited to hear your planning journey in case we do end getting married there!

PS: I’m like you… You just say “hot” and I start to sweat. UGH.

We spent a night at the Moana for our honeymoon! It is a beautiful, beautiful hotel. The staff was super friendly and we really enjoyed our time there! Your reception will be awesome! Plus, who can beat that entrance!

The Surfrider is a great hotel. We stayed there for a portion of our honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and central location.

Oh how pretty! I don’t think you have to worry about your guests having enough to do in between. My FI and I barely had time to relax when we were in Oahu!

My ceremony is in the morning and my reception is at night as well. The only time available at my church was in the morning (my hometown church is on a college campus and does both parish and alumni weddings, so it can be difficult to get a slot), and I really wanted to have a reception with tons of dancing! No one feels like dancing at noon. I’ll admit that it is a little selfish of me to want the time gap, but I also feel like it will be worth it for me to get to take all the photos I want, relax a little more, and be able to enjoy my entire reception. I am planning on coming up with a list of things for guests to do during the middle of the day, though - I think I am going to try to organize a couple of golf outings, suggest lunch spots, and encourage my guests to check out Philadelphia (we are getting married about 20 minutes outside the city).

::sigh:: the Moana Surfrider is beautiful, you really can’t go wrong there. :)

We thought about Hale Koa too, but like you, we wanted scenery and not just garden scenery. We are staying there for 2 nights though, I’ve always loved their pool as a kid.

We also are having a late morning ceremony with an evening reception. I couldn’t get a better slot at the church but still wanted an evening reception. I have a website with things to do around town and am thinking about setting up snacks at the hotel for guests. I had a friend a few years ago with a gap and I didn’t mind it too much. I am actually more concerned about being ready in time for a 11am ceremony — what time are you guys getting your hair/makeup done?

I absolutely LOVE your ceremony site! I’m sure you will be able to find plenty of nice activities for your guests to do on the island before your sure-to-be beautiful reception. What a great oceanic view!

I actually think the long gap in between is waaaay better than the usual couple hours when people don’t know what to do with themselves. In this case, they have some great relax/play on the beach time and still have a chance to get cleaned up for your more formal reception.

The gap in time actually sounds good - it will take a decent amount of time to drive back from Lanikuhonua to the Moana Surfrider (I looked at both venues in my quest for wedding sites). There is a lot to do in Waikiki - it’s fun to just walk around and take it all in. Your wedding is going to be so awesome… can’t wait to see the recap pics!

My family used to stay at the Moana Surfrider every Easter Break when I was in middle school. I would be running around looking for the bride whenever I saw staff setting up ANYTHING that might possibly be wedding-related. What a beautiful place to celebrate your wedding!

@deejaylondon: We’re waking up at the butt crack of dawn to put on our faces! 6am to be exact. Yikes.

Glad to hear so many of you have stayed at the Moana Surfrider! I’ve only seen pictures and I can only imagine what it looks like in person.
