Favorite Words, Part II

January 29th, 2009 @ 10:59 am by Mrs. Cheese

I’ve collected quotes for a while, copied into the notes section of my email program. Here are a few more of my favorites:

She is a friend of mind. She gather me, man. The pieces I am, she gather them and give them back to me in all the right order. It’s good, you know, when you got a woman who is a friend of your mind.

~Toni Morrison, Beloved

A blessed thing it is for any man or woman to have a friend, one human soul whom we can trust utterly, who knows the best and worst of us, and who loves us in spite of all our faults.

~ Charles Kingsley (1819-75)

You must never feel badly about making mistakes,” explained Reason quietly, “as long as you take the trouble to learn from them. For you often learn more by being wrong for the right reasons than you do by being right for the wrong reasons.

~Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth

To fall in love is easy, even to remain in it is not difficult; our human loneliness is cause enough. But it is a hard quest worth making to find a comrade through whose steady presence one becomes steadily the person one desires to be.

~Anna Louise Strong

The supreme happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved — loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.

~Victor Hugo

For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul.

~Judy Garland

Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up.

~James Baldwin

Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.

~Albert Camus

No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those who are thoroughly persuaded of each other’s worth.

~Robert Southey (1774-1843)

I am learning to live close to the lives of my friends without ever seeing them. No miles of any measurement can separate your soul from mine.

~John Mu

If you press me to say why I loved him, I can say no more than because he was he, and I was I.

~Michel de Montaigne

Do you have any more quotes you’d like to share with the hive?

I used two quotes in my wedding program. This was on the cover:

“If I know what love is, it is because of you.” -Herman Hesse

The second quote, I had at the very end of the program text:

“Remember tonight…for it is the beginning of always.” -Dante Alighieri

I absolutely love these!!!

I LOVE The Phantom Tollbooth! It was my absolute favorite book when I was a kid! I don’t know anyone else who has read it!

Like BlushingBride530 The Phantom TollBooth was (who am I kidding IS) my favorite book. I may have to find a way to use a quote from there in our wedding!

FI & I are HUGE Lost fans so I want to use this:
“All we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us.” ~Penny Widmore
in our programs.

I remember reading the Phantom Tollbooth when I was younger, I need to go back and read that again.
Thank you for all the quotes - I’m thinking I might have a couple people read quotes during the ceremony…just stand-up where they are and say their quote and sit down… I still working it out in my head :)

I’m a Phantom Tollbooth fan as well! And OMG grumpybear, if I could work a Lost quotation in… that’s a great one.

I’d love to use the line “You are my life now,” but… it’s from Twilight (giggle). Boy isn’t quite ok with that.

I’ll definitely be using “Whatever souls are made of, yours and mine are the same.” Which is Bronte.

Literary love quotes make me swoooon. Here’s one of my favorites:

From _A Gift From The Sea_, by Anne Morrow Lindbergh

“When you love someone, you do not love them all the time, in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility. It is even a lie to pretend to. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity; when the only continuity possible, in life as in love, is in growth, in fluidity-in freedom, in the sense that the dancers are free, barely touching as they pass, but partners in the same pattern.”

Great post, Ms. Cheese! :)

One more!

On love, from _A Farewell to Arms_, by Hemingway:

“Often a man wishes to be alone and a girl wishes to be alone too and if they love each other they are jealous of that in each other, but I can truly say we never felt that. We could feel alone when we were together, alone against the others. It has only happened to me like that once. I have been alone while I was with many girls and that is the way that you can be most lonely. But we were never lonely and never afraid when we were together…”

“I have for the first time found what I can truly love–I have found you. You are my sympathy–my better self–my good angel–I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my centre and spring of life, wrap my existence about you–and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.”
Charlotte Bronte–Jane Eyre

I had never heard the Anna Lousie Strong quote, but I find it to be such a beautiful statement. Thank you for sharing - it is truly just such a true statement.

I heard Garrison Keillor recite this about a year ago, and I love it:

“This is my dream,
It is my own dream,
I dreamt it.
I dreamt that my hair was kempt.
Then I dreamt that my true love unkempt it.”
-My Dream, Ogden Nash

I have tried getting into your posts but they are too long-winded and wordy. Maybe more pics and details would keep reader’s interest?

While Miss Cheese IS wordy and often posts long entries, I like her because she has been around the block, so to speak. Those of us planning second weddings can certainly appreciate what Miss Cheese brings to the group and those planning their first weddings SHOULD also appreciate what she brings.

Those of us who’ve BTDT once already know that a great marriage isn’t built upon beautiful centerpieces and gowns, but on other things that need to be built before those vows are taken. Plan a marriage, celebrate with a wedding.

PS - Great post. I, too, love quotes.

@bleh: Have my posts always been too long and wordy for you, or have they become that way recently? I’ll be honest, I don’t edit them because then they read more like I talk (ya know, long-winded and kind of scattered), but perhaps I need to reconsider. Thanks for the feedback!

Victor Hugo and Charles Kingsley have to be my favorites. They are all great though. Thanks for sharing. And reminding me I need to start working on my words…and fast.

I found your post reading Instyle (even though I read Weddingbee anyway!) You were included in “What’s hot in Weddings on the Web.” Which just reinforces how hot your posts are! :)

Miss Cheese,

I love these quotes and what great literary references. too bad people don’t express their feelings like this anymore. Judy’s quote really touched my soul.

To be so lucky to such a love!

Congrats on your InStyle mention!
