Save Your Gocco Screens

January 29th, 2009 @ 5:38 pm by Mrs. Sushi

I heard a rumor somewhere that you could save your already-burned Gocco screens in case you wanted to print the same design on a different day. Well, I put this rumor to the test and succeeded! Remember our return address I printed on our invitations? I just didn’t feel right tossing the screen in the trash when I was done, so instead, I wrapped the screen in Saran Wrap and stuck it in the freezer. I was too lazy to clean the screen, so I didn’t. I wrapped it up and stuck it in the freezer, ink and all.

Six weeks later, I pulled the screen out of the freezer, let it defrost for about an hour or two, then started printing away. It worked with no issues at all!

Now I have envelopes for thank you cards already pre-printed with our return address. I didn’t even have to add any ink. How’s that for recycling!

Do you have any handy Gocco screen preservation tips to share?

Really? The ink defrosts too? I’ve always thrown mine away because I’m too lazy to scrape all the excess ink off. Thanks Sushi!

I have cleaned the ink off (I use cheap vegetable oil and lots of paper towels) and re-used my screens, which I’ve just stored with the Gocco. However, after doing my invites suite, I had several screens and just blow off cleaning the last of them. When I had to come back and print more (of course) the next week, I actually had better luck with the ones that were still inked than the ones I’d cleaned! I didn’t freeze them, but I only let them sit a week so the freezer trick might be wise for longer storage..

Oh how you tempt me, Sushi! I’ve been wanting to get on the Gocco bandwagon ever since I joined Weddingbee, but since they stopped making supplies it seems like a waste to jump on this late in the game.

wow - thanks, Miss Sushi! I have yet to embark on my first gocco project, but it’s good to know to hold onto these suckers.

I’ve done this a bunch of times, and I think the longest the screen lasted was about a month. After that, they never looked even. Also- the ink lasts a lonng time if you defrost it a bit with the hairdryer. I have TONS of left over ink in my fridge:) nice work on your invites and return address!

Awesome. I’ve been scraping off the ink and keeping the screens in a ziploc. But now I’ll try this technique.

I have done this as well. I used a freezer bag and put in my screen with ink and all. Although I didn’t freeze it for 6 weeks, it was in there for about 3, and it worked perfectly after thawed out!

I’m with youmandalynn17, I feel like I’m being tempted to get a Gocco. I just don’t think its worth it since supplies are running low.

@Diane: did you just store them at room temperature or in the fridge? I cant possibly finish them all in one day so i need to store my screens for a couple of days. Thanks so much for this info miss sushi!!

What white ink did you use to make it show up so well on the red paper?

@Julia Burgon: Just regular white gocco ink from Northwood Studios. Once it dried, it wasn’t as bright as the above photo. You can see it better here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/01/01/hawaii-wedding-invitations/
