Mrs. Hot Cocoa's Picture
Mrs. Hot Cocoa, Boston/Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 31, JD/PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Medical Student Engagement Date: May 30, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: April, 2008 Venue: Ritz Carlton, Marina Del Rey About Me: I am a professional student by day and an amateur cupcake taster, bargain shopper, and wedding planner by night. I am obsessed with NPR, the Food Network, paper, dance shows, Anthropologie, post-structuralist theory, Weddingbee!, "The Office," and celebrity gossip. When not procrastinating from my dissertation, I spend time catering to Jellyby, our overly anxious shih tzu, and getting to know Mr. Hot Cocoa. We have only been dating for fifteen years, so it's like I'm in love with a stranger! From the East Coast, we are planning a Jewish-Chinese Extravaganza in L.A., where we both grew up.
About Mrs. Hot Cocoa

Let me make this clear. I looove cupcakes. I live cupcakes. I’d like to be reincarnated as a cupcake.

(Um, how sweet are these cupcake cars from the Maker’s Faire?
With matching cupcake helmets? I’d trade my wheels for these any day.)

NYC has Magnolia’s, which does have all da bomb frostins (and even better banana pudding). Boston has Kick Ass Cupcakes, which has a mojito cupcake that is dreamy. Our wedding, however, is in LA, so while I was out there this week I had the task of finding a delicious cupcakery to provide the baked goodies for our wedding. It was hard work, but someone had to do it.

This is how my mom and I ended up with this heavenly view: a dozen delectable “cupcake babies” from Vanilla Bake Shop. Out of the dozen, we chose four flavors for our cupcake tower: the banana chocolate chip, which has the moistest, yummiest cake; the Meyer lemon raspberry, which has a tart lemon curd filling; the red velvet, with a cream cheese icing that is to die for; and a classic vanilla, which will have purple sprinkles to go with our wedding colors.

LA has a ton of cupcakeries, including the big players Sprinkles, Crumbs, and Susiecakes. But what I love about Vanilla Bake Shop is that along with the quality baked goods, you get quality, highly personalized service. How cute is owner and baker Amy Berman?!

And if cupcakes and cakes aren’t your thing (what’s wrong with you?!), VBS also makes French macarons, cookies and tarts, and their signature “icebox dessert shots”. Drool.

What’s your favorite cupcake flavor? And will you be doing special desserts for your wedding?

Oh, you temptress! Not only do I want to drive around in a cupcake, I want to eat them all! Love the flavors you chose, we are thinking of doing a lemon raspberry combinations for one of our cake tiers. Yum!

I love babycakes in New York too. How in the world do they make their cupcakes so tasty without sugar?

it’s gotta be red velvet. i live a block away from magnolia’s and eat their red velvet and banana pudding all the time. i don’t LOVE their cupcakes, but their red velvet is very light and fluffy. i’m on a diet and one kill for one right now.

I can’t wait for our traditional SuperBowl food. The past few years, my fiance and I have gotten takeout from Namaskar and cupcakes from Kick Ass. Oh, heaven.

the mojito cupcakes at kickass are dangerously good. they actually inspired my desire for a lime-icing wedding cake (which my mom’s making–so we’ve been having lots of fun “sampling”)

Anything involving Meyer Lemon is pretty high on my list. Sounds divine!

are you having a wedding cake too? I sort of don’t want to do a wedding cake and just cupcakes or cookies. Is that totally wrong?

Haha! I love the title of your post…I love Rachael McAdams and Ryan Gosling…and I love cupcakes!

We didn’t have cupcakes, but our flavors were black chocolate (infused with coffee) and green tea (infused with matcha green tea) (we loved the bright green color and it was yummy!)

Those cupcakes look delicious! I love the variety of flavors that you chose. I might go out and bake a few of my own tonight to satisfy this craving from looking at your pictures.

my favorite cupcake flavor is cupcake. yum, i love them all!

well, except anything with coconut. i don’t love the coconut.

@nyc1234: that’s not totally wrong at all! i plan on serving cupcakes with only a small tier to cut into for pictures. i think cupcakes and cookies would be great! and i’m sure i’d leave with some extras in my hand. i’m kind of bold like that. lol. can’t risk breaking the cookies in my purse now.

There’s a place in Austin called Hey Cupcake! that serves a “Michael Jackson”–chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. Not my fave flavor, but the best name for a cupcake ever!

@Indie B: I don’t even like cream cheese frosting, but would eat that cup cake for the name alone!

Lets be clear I too LOOOOOVE Cupcakes! For our wedding cake I wanted to do one BIG cupcake and a bunch of tiny cupcakes… but I got veto’d :(
My favorite cupcake flavor is Red Velvet (Wonderland or Susiecakes) OR Dark Chocolate Banana (Sprinkles). YUMM-MERS!

@Miss Taffy: I tried Babycakes in Hong Kong, and I didn’t love it. But I think I gotta give them another chance here in the states.

@Mrs. Bee: The red velvet at Magnolia’s is truly awesome. Here’s a deal: get them for me, and I’ll eat them so that you can enjoy them vicariously. ;-P

@rasgoola: Stick with the mojito; the rest are ok, but they won’t make you giddy the way the mojito will! Happy birthday!

@katrinab: Let me know if you need another sampler — I have a very discerning palate for mojito frosting. LOL.

@nyc1234: We’re only having cupcakes, no wedding cake. We’re not so into the photo-op. Plus we have a dessert buffet for the guests already, so cake is overkill. Cupcakes are probably overkill too, but I love them!

@Indie B: That’s awesome.

@AliCherri1: My faves are your faves! Cupcake friends forever!

@Amber1279: Where are you located? VBS has a delicious chocolate peanut butter cupcake that tastes just like a Reese’s peanut butter cup.

I LURVE cupcakes….and I am now drooling on my keyboard!

We are doing a frost and top it yourself cupcake bar for our wedding! Thats right, sheild your eyes when you see the cupcakes cause they will be NAKED! You pick your cake, pick your frosting and pick your topping…YUM!

I love it cause I can eat cream cheese frosting on ANYTHING. So you don’t have to have a red velvet cupcake or carrot cake to get the cream cheese frosting!

Our cake flavors: Red Velvet, Spice, Pineapple and Old Fashioned Butter Yellow.
Our Frostings: Cream Cheese (of course), Chocolate Cream, Coconut and Whipped Cream
Then toppings like: Hazelnuts, toasted coconut, sprinkles, chocolate shavings…yum

Yeah, at my wedding, you can find me at the cupcake bar!

Ok, it’s official, I have to stop at Ooh La La Cupcakes on my way home and get myself a Friday night treat.
They’re doing cupcakes for our wedding, and sent us home with a sampler of all 15 flavours they make. They were all so delicious and creative we decided to get a dozen of each flavour and then a few dozen of our big favs (we’re ordering mini cupcakes so people can have two or three instead of one big ‘un). We contemplated having them decorated to coordinate with the wedding, but the existing decorating offered clear clues as to what the flavour was in an artistic and beautiful way and we thought, Why mess with a good thing? My personal fav would have to be Mint Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Cup and Pineapple Upside Down with toasted Coconut icing. Aaah. Drool

@PrettyKitty: That is a GENIUS idea. You should post pictures of how it turns out and what everyone’s reaction was. I would flip out over a cupcake bar at a wedding.

@West Coast Bride: Mint chocolate chip . . . yum.

Hooray for cupcakes!! Red velvet cupcakes are my favorite…oh, and chocolate. I love vanilla frosting, too. Ok, I need to get over to Vanilla Bake Shop. I’ve passed it 100 times and read so many top reviews of the place and never stopped in. You’ve convinced me, Miss HC. I’ll blame my 5 lb weight gain on you! :)

@Miss Glitter: I really did gain 5 lbs while I was in LA. I think the blame could be equally shared by VBS, In n’ Out, and my mom’s home cooking.

@lit_geek26: I like Sweet — they were closed a few Mondays ago when I dropped by, and I hope it was just temporary.

@Mrs. Green Tea: LOL. I wouldn’t waste red velvet cupcake on Mr. HC’s face; if it’s going anywhere, it’s my mouth!

Those minis look TO DIE FOR!!! Mannnnn I want a cupcake now. We have brownies here at home but it’s not the same. And dangit, I just had caramel balsamic gelato (yum) so I don’t think it’s appropriate to run out for a cupcake now. Hmph.

VBS has the best red velvet! But I’m a sucker for their spicy carrot. I once had a taste off with a few of my friends, cupcakes from a well known bakery in Bev Hills, and VBS won hands down!
