About Miss Snapdragon

“The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” -Alan Alda

Quite often, I run across message board posts and blog posts from brides lamenting the amazing weddings they have attended or seen on the internet. I hear “I could never pull that off”, or “I am just not that creative”. Not true, my friends! Creativity is all about confidence.

Here is the single most important truth in creative confidence: If you like it, chances are - others will like it, too. Everyone - EVERYONE - is creative. The more you act on your creative ideas, the more you will sharpen your instincts as to what works and what doesn’t.

We are all human beings with different talents. Everybody is good at something, and most anything you are good at - requires creativity. So yeah, you may not be a craft Jedi-master that can create her own prom dress out of fabric you wove on a loom yourself (and grew the cotton in your backyard, but of course) - BUT you may be someone who can envision a theme or a look for your wedding and hire somebody else to actualize that look for you. You may be someone who can make her guests feel special in an amazingly creative and personal way. Maybe you can put together an incredibly unconventional menu or write a ceremony that is romantic and fits your personality perfectly. Everyone is creative - you just need the confidence to be yourself and let your creativity flag fly (or your freak flag, as luck may have it!). Let it out!

Another element to free-flowing creativity is trial and error. If you have an idea, try it. There are a number of people who feel comfortable saying things like, “In my life, the thing I am most afraid of is failure.” I could not disagree more with this statement! We fail every day - and we WIN every day! Personally, I love to fail - it’s not something you can get away from, AND, it’s not so bad to fail now and then. Half of the time when I try something new, I get it right; the other half the time, I find out how NOT to do something! The world will not end if you fail at something. Here’s the deal: If you are too scared to voice your creative opinions or try out one of your possibly fantabulous ideas… you are just saying no to yourself - and why would you want to do that?

Once you stop playing that tape in your head that says, “you can’t,” chances are - you WILL!

Have any of you bees recently opened the creative floodgates? Did you find yourself in a crisis of confidence? Or, what thoughts or practices have helped you heighten your creative flow??

Amazing post Miss Snapdragon. It’s so true but sometimes you need to hear it from someone else.
My Mom always said “You can do anything you put your mind to”. Sometimes it doesn’t come out as you hoped but you still did it! :D

Great post. What a confidence booster! Sometimes I attempt a project, and I’m just uber-determined to get it done and make it GOOD. When I go into it with that attitude, I’m always pleased with the end result. The trick, then, is to be that bold more often!

Well, I cannot say that I suffered a creative crisis, but when I started my wedding planning, I had seen the many different pocketfold invitations that people have done and became inspired (obsessed is more like it)! Though I never thought that I was good with paper crafting (I do not have patience for scrapbooking), I decided to try to make an invitation. Several drafts later, I created a beautiful invitation that you can’t find in some standard catalog.

OMG, such a good post, Snaps!! “…leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition”! Such good stuff. I just can’t agree with you more!! I’m definitely creative (or is it more nuts?) in the envisioning part, but not in the execution. And I fail…a lot! But I don’t really mind it, because, like you said, you learn from it. And taking chances is good for the soul, no? If you like something, go for it!!

I love the quote and your post Miss Snapdragon. It is so true, the journey of creativity is just as important as the final result. I love the fact that weddings let us tap into our creativity, no matter how ornate or simple something might be it’s still worth trying.

GREAT post! It’s so easy to tell ourselves we don’t have what it takes or we could never pull of *that* particular project. Everyone has their own type of creativity that they can channel, harness, and do anything they want with!

Great adivce. I need to get my creativity out there and just do it. I can create many beautiful themes in my head, but I never know if I will be able to put it all together, but now I can try!

Oh, I’m definitely creative enough. I have creativity oozing out of my ears. You need talent and/or money in most cases to make things happen though, and when it comes to most things, I lack both.

I do have one fabulous website though.

Great advice! I don’t think everyone who laments their lack of creativity does so because they don’t have the confidence to try out their wacky ideas–a lot of people say they aren’t creative because they aren’t in the habit of plugging into the creative side of their brain at all. They don’t think they even HAVE the ideas to say no to. Still, I think everyone should do wacky and silly creative things as part of their wedding–it’s sure more exciting that looking at reams of perfect Martha weddings (sorry Martha, love ya, but you know what I mean!)

Well said! I’m not that creative, but I managed to make our invitations, favours, table name listings and various stationery and I thought they turned out pretty well! I think it’s because no one was watching me, so I could get it right in my own time! Crafty people make you feel insecure because they’re so swift and make it look so effortless.

Great confidence booster, Miss Snapdragon! Thanks for the reminder. As my diy wedding invitations loom before me, it’s hard to think that I can really pull it off!

love the alan alda reference! ;)
I think everyone (even the fiancés out there!) needs to be reminded of this every once in a while - creativity will come if you let it!

I like this…there are so many different ways to be “creative!” Thanks for the inspiration!

@Miss Perfume: I’m totally the opposite…I can’t envision so I steal ideas from people and put my own twist on it during the execution process. We should work together… :)

I think when a lot of people say they aren’t creative they’re referring to coming up with ideas, not rejecting ideas that they do come up with in which case it really isn’t a matter of confidence. Some people just aren’t as “right-brained”.

You are so right! I really never DIY’ed anything before the wedding. It just took a lot of will and a lot of patience, and knowing that making something with my own hands would be far more appreciated than something I could buy in a store. In the end it was worth it… All of it!
