Mrs. Perfume's Picture
Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.

I lurve feathers. They conjure up visions of Jean Harlow and old Hollywood! I really like how they can either be big, epic, and grand, or quiet and soft. They’re everywhere in the fashion ether these days. And they would work wonderfully into a vintage wedding aesthetic!

Yes, yes, I know. These feather things are a bit dramatic. And by ’dramatic’ I mean crazy over the top. But they seem to work… with these slim/drapey dresses anyway. Can you imagine those ginormous Victoria Secret-esque angel wing things… at your wedding?

Hot Springs, where we’re getting married, is a mountain resort town, and is typically 10 degrees cooler than Washington DC. And in the spring, it’s a crap shoot—it could be cool or it could be hot as Hades. Soooo, I’m seriously considering purchasing one for the reception. But of course it will be a more understated interpretation of the ones above. You can get them in full feather (a la dream angel above) or in Maribou (which looks like fur) or ostrich (which is a little more… thready).

The couture dresses here are designed by Brit, Jenny Packham. And it seems that feathers are really popular with the Brits… but not so much with Americans. Some of the shrugs are not cheap, and it’s difficult to find them in the U.S. It’s been kind of difficult to find good, but not expensive feather capelets… I’m ordering an ostrich wrap from a place in the UK called Joanlee. But stateside, Monique Lhuillier does this amazing (read: tres expensive) one….

How will you keep warm on your wedding day?

just basking in the 100 degree heat of an Oklahoman summer should do the trick :)

I love this idea! Though I don’t think I’m chic enough to ever pull it off.

Um, it’ll be late August, so I think a city summer in Philly’ll have the keeping me warm thing covered.

My parents’ wedding was two days after Christmas nearly 30 years ago. My mother modified HER mother’s dress, and turned the cathedral train into a cape, bordered with Maribou. She looked like a snow princess!

They look beautiful & I wish I could pull it off. Unfortunately, I have an intense feather phobia so it would never happen. sigh…

I adore that picture you posted at the bottom! I saw that posted recently and fell in love with the idea too! Too bad I am getting married in the summer! But wouldn’t it be fun to wear around the house? :)

I think this sounds amazing! From how you’ve been describing your wedding so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up in Vogue soon thereafter! ;)

We’ll be dealing with unpredictable weather here in MD in October. It could be hot, warm or freezing! My girls are wearing short dresses, so I think I’m going to get them cardigans to go with the dresses as part of the BM gifts, and I think I may even get one for myself. We won’t be outside much, so I figure the short dresses won’t be an issue, and they’d be able to wear them again!

Like other summer brides I think the August sun of Sunny Southern California will do the trick ;)
P.S. That Monique Lhuillier one is stunning!

I’m a knitter, so I’ve been looking at a lot of patterns for various heirloom lace shawls and once I decide which I like best, I’ll likely be knitting myself a stole or shawl.

It’s tough to compete with Jean Harlow in that first pic. Stunning! I love this concept. It is making me wish my wedding theme was “Old Hollywood Glamour”!

Feathers are so lovely, but too much of them bothers my asthma and triggers and attack. I used a faux fur wrap from a place called Spazooie (I may have the spelling wrong). I also got them for my girls: http://flickr.com/photos/anthonylinda/3169327457/sizes/l/

I will be in Maine in October, so I’m expecting the outdoor ceremony to be a little on the chilly side. I’m thinking white Pashminas for myself and my two BMs. What do you think?

Oh man, I want to get remarried so I can do old hollywood with a bias-cut gown and FEATHERS! Swoon. I did have elements of old hollywood in my wdding, but in the end it wasn’t a theme you could say was a THEME.

@Miss Taffy: @Miss Rye Bread: Thank you, ladies!! It’s definitely not everyone’s taste…so I appreciate the appreciation!
@Beth: Love that personal touch
@Miss Glitter: you can add “elements” of old Hollywood…yes?
@fifisweet: I think that sounds really nice. Maybe wear brooches or sweater clips on the pashminas, too?
@Ruby Slippers: Yes, yes, can give a nod towards an era without being to “theme-y”!

I love it!! I’m into anything glamorous, dramatic and vintage. I think you’ll look amazing. I’m doing a faux fur shrug to keep warm so you and I are sort of on the same page.
