Pretty Little Cake

January 30th, 2009 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

The other day I discovered inchmark, a ridiculously and wonderfully pretty blog written by a former senior art director of Martha Stewart Kids and Martha Stewart Living. Her name is Brooke, just like mine, so naturally, I love her. (We Brookes gotta stick together, ya know?) This blog is chock full of beautiful visuals and lots of yummy wedding ideas (even if they’re not all specifically intended for weddings).

After looking at so many wedding cakes over the last year and a half and thinking that fondant was the only solution to making a cake look pretty, reading this inchmark post was a refreshing reminder that plain old icing can still look really pretty (and not necessarily like a weird store-bought cake wreck). This cake for Brooke’s 3-year-old daughter, Bee (yes, Bee!) is absolutely darling and lovely, but totally simple, and it could absolutely be translated to a wedding cake.

If you’re planning to DIY your wedding cake and this sweet treat is calling your name, definitely check out inchmark for the tutorial on how to make the little icing dots (without dealing with fondant). And yes, even her how-to photos are darling.

What a cute and easy way to create your own cake. Thanks for posting! I am not making my cake (we’re actually not having cake), but this is a get inspiration pic for those who are.

I made my own wedding cake. I hate fondant, and knew I wanted a cake that was pretty but also really good. I just used a really stable buttercream (we got married in July) fresh fowers and ribbon. It was beautiful, relatively easy and tasty! Mine was 3 tiers, and I assembled it the mroning of the wedding. It does take some planning and practice, but if it’s important to you, I say go for it!

Love it!!! I am not a fan of fondant - or it’s price tag! There are so many other beautiful and less costly alternatives. Thank you for sharing - I’m going to link to this inchmark post!

Yes. Thanks for posting this, I love polka dots and this is such an easy and cool way to decorate the cake! We’re going to have a cake buffet, and have different cakes so people aren’t stuck with one flavor. We’re having a small wedding (60 people) so FMIL and me will attempt the baking on our own. I trust her baking skills more that mine :)
