Glistening Face - NOT!

January 31st, 2009 @ 2:00 pm by Mrs. Piglet

We opted for a morning outside ceremony despite the gap it will create in between the ceremony and reception. One of the main reasons for this is my sensitivity to heat. That, coupled with the nervousness associated with being the center of attention, means I will be drenched and will probably look as if I’ve run a marathon.

I went to see a reputable dermatologist in the DC area, according to Washingtonian’s Top Doctors, and her recommendation was Botox injections into the scalp. I’m actually quite stressed about this. Mr. P and I have talked about how we can strategically wipe away the droplets of sweat dripping down my face. We thought that he could act as if he’s wiping away my tears. My gut tells me that that’s not going to work. :) I’ve read entries from past bees, but most were related to underarm sweating, which isn’t really a problem. I’m going to seek another professional opinion in the next month. In the meantime, I’ve purchased a light and flowy dress and plan to wear my hair up.

Do any of you have success stories or recommendations to remedy face sweating? I just might fly out and hug you if you’ve found something that works (and may work for me). :)

Don’t do the botox! I’m sorry I don’t have alternative suggestions, other than keeping a cotton hanky on hand. I just wanted to say that I too feared that being the center of attention would make me sweat like a pig (no pun intended). However, even with 240 eyes on me (120 guests), I wasn’t nearly as nervous as I thought I would be. Just wanted to mention my experience, as sometimes our anticipation of nervousness is worse than the nervousness itself.

I’m sorry I don’t have any suggestions- but that picture is scaring the hell out of me! ACK!!

I have heard of people taking anticholinergics for this, but I don’t know if RX meds are the route you want to go in and there will of course be side effects. Sounds like you are searching for something more natural…

That is a very scary picture. I would not suggest Botox as it seems a little extreme.

I’m a sweater also, and it’s not fun. When I have a big presentation, a date, getting ready for a big night out, I’m always sweating. What works for me is taking my sweet ass time (lol), taking it slow, keeping the room I’m getting ready in cool, and drinking water. I never rush myself, and keep my body temp down. I don’t have any medical suggestions, but hope you find something that works for you!

To me, botox doesn’t seem that extreme. I know people who have it injected for problems with excessive sweating from their underarms and it works wonders from them. Otherwise, like a previous poster mentioned, anticholinergics would work, but the side effects are a dry mouth, feeling really warm (since it would shut down sweating throughout your entire body), urinary retention, possible increased heart rate, among others. Otherwise, there are prescription antiperspirants. The one I’m thinking of is Drysol. It sort of looks like a bingo dauber (sponge type circle at one end and you dab it on yourself and the liquid in the container is applied to your skin). You could apply that to your forehead (especially the night beforehand) and that work. I have personally used that for underarm sweating and it was a miracle. These are my opinions from personal use/being a med student, but I suggest that you ask doctorgirl. I’m sure that she would know way more about your options :) Good luck!

I too have very oily skin :(

What I have found that seems to help a little is to wear as little makeup as possible. It seems the more foundation & powder I put on to help cover the oil just makes it worse. I would dab concealer only over problem areas (if you have any) and maybe some light blush near your temples. The longest makeup has ever lasted on my oily skin in 4 hours. With that said, have makeup be the last thing you do before you leave for the ceremony! Oil blotting sheets are also really great. Have whomever is walking you down the aisle carry a couple in his pocket and allow you to use one right before you make your grand entrance! Hope that helps a little :)

Have you tried many foundation bases? A lot of them were designed specifically to go under the hot bright lights of the runway- maybe see if you can try some various samples and put yourself in a normal situation where you end up melty-faced haha. I personally am a fan of Dr. Feelgood by Benefit….Photofinish by Makeup Forever is pretty good too.

@marquettemonv15: Thanks for the suggestion! Maybe I’ll try applying Drysol on my fivehead. :) I’ve heard of it, but wasn’t too sure whether people applied it on their face. It’s worth a shot. :)

@Miss Chocolate Chip and @Kaleigh: Thank ya for the make up tips. I know nothing. My mom works at Estee Lauder so I’ve never tried anything else. I’ll definitely have some blotting sheets in my handy dandy emergency kit.

I am also concerned about a drippy face the day of. I have nightmares about drippy wet hair, melting face, and a dress sliding off due to sweating. I know it’s a bit extreme but, I do know how much of a concern it is!

I’m excited to hear what other people suggest to you!

I had my wedding in Austin during one of the hottest months in the summer, August. It reached 100 degrees by the time we had our ceremony at 6pm. I used makeup from Rae Cosmetics, made specifically to deal with the texas heat. I also chewed on a few ice cubes before walking down the aisle. This helped cool my face/body a little. I also had people all around me with something cool (drinks, mini electric fan, etc.)

HTH!

I just wanted to add that if you go the drysol route - try it at least a few weeks beforehand!! that stuff gives me pits of fire… Would hate to have you all red-faced and scratchy on your big day!!

i haven’t tried it personally but i’ve heard of people using it and i say go for it (if the other solutions, like drysol doesn’t work and you’re interested in those)! i would try the botox once far enough in advance of the big day just to make sure that you’re satisfied–if it works, use it for the wedding day! and it’s not like you’re going to a sketchy dermatologist who won’t know what he/she is doing. i agree with marquettemonv15, it doesn’t seem that extreme.

I was told that a product called Proface was the way to go. A friend sent me a sample, but I haven’t been able to try it out yet. I’m SURE I’ll need it at an outdoor reception on an inevitably humid southern Louisiana night in June!

i totally had this issue for my wedding!! I kept on hoping the pastor would pray so that I could wipe my face!! The spotlight, the crowded church, I was so hot! I even sweated off a fake eyelash!
I would use those wax/creams that reduce your pores - but more likely target the t-zone and reduce the ‘glistening’. GOOD LUCK!

Blotting sheets are GREAT!

Also maybe consider trying airbrush foundation, I hear it doesn’t “melt” as much as traditional foundation!

Hi! We’re location twins. =)
I tried airbrush foundation during a hot, humid day. Aside from my oily t-zone needing a pat down, the makeup held up pretty well…especially with a primer…even 8 hours later.

I highly recommend trying out the airbrush foundation WITH primer. It might surprise you.

i know a girl who liked to use clear gel deodorant on her forehead and near her hairline, she said it helped with the sweating.

Another vote for Dyrsol. A word about what you buy, though … they have a regular version and one for your face. Drysol is alcohol based and can be very drying. I think think version for your face has a lower alcohol content. I’ve heard that if you mix it with your moisturizer, you can just buy the regular one which has a lower per ounce cost AND then you can also use it under your arms and on your neck and back … any place you might be likely to feel dampness in high humidity. Also, it takes awhile to start working … so be sure to start the regime a few weeks before the wedding and keep it up any night.

Even if you sweat, even if droplets of sweat run down your face, I guarentee no one will focus on that. The people there are your friends and family, they love you and want to take part in one of the most important days in your life. No one will care, and 5 minutes after it’s over, no one will even remember the sweat. So try not to worry :)
(I’m a sweater too, but there’s not much I can do about it, so I just don’t think about it)

Please be oh, so careful about putting deodorant anywhere other than where it should be. In August 2007, I was a bridesmaid in a very warm church. I sweat like a man playing basketball, so I had the lovely idea of putting Certain Dri on my back. I broke out like crazy with red bumps. Not worth it!!!!

DRYSOL - follow the directions, use it before you go to sleep, wash off in the morning. I know that it is safe to use on the face. Start it now or a couple of weeks before your wedding and you should be fine for your wedding.
The way it typically works is you use it 3 or 4 days in a row, then only need to use it once or twice a week after that. I would definately use it the night before your wedding.
IT SHOULD DEFINATELY WORK if it works for people who have major sweaty underarms - you don’t even need deodorant after using this…that is how good it works…

I can’t believe the dermatologist didn’t suggest this….. I used to work for one and that is how I know about it…. strange… anyway DRYSOL you can get it from your dermatologist or online… this stuff is magic

@shaunna: Thanks shaunna! I’ve heard of drysol, and I asked a dermatologist years ago about it. She seemed a bit perplexed that I had even suggested it. I’m going to try this out. I’m just hoping my skin won’t become irritated like others who have tried it claimed.

Excessive Head Sweating

It’s just about one of the more embarrassing disorders you can have. Excessive head and face sweating is as noticeable as the broad side of a barn. It’s out in the open for everyone to look at. I should know. I was a victim of hyperhidrosis for years. But I found a solution and I’m about to pass it on to you. After all, no one should suffer from such a trivial inconvenience as excessive head sweating. Let’s cure you of this problem right away!

I worked in a busy office building and of course with my problem, it turned out to be a very sociable place. I’d get stopped in the hallways all the time with co-workers making chit-chat or just asking round about questions. All the while my face and head would gleam with unsightly perspiration.

I carried around tissues and would wash my face in the bathroom constantly. Deodorants were no help and skin creams would clog my pores and only plug up the problem, giving me terrible rashes.
I used to try tea leaf tanning solutions, but they would dye my face and it was even more ridiculous. Nothing seemed to work. I suffered from hyperhidrosis, a gland disorder, that caused my sweat glands to work on overdrive no matter what the situation.

Really, the problem was so bad, my work began to suffer. My own self consciousness held me back and caused me to stay quiet in meetings and hold back suggestions. I wouldn’t want to draw any more attention to myself and it became a crippling disorder.
Once I realized that my excessive head sweating was holding me back from dating, I had to act on it. My work was bad enough, but now I couldn’t even meet someone? I don’t think so.

The key to unlocking my head sweating was learning the natural triggers to my hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) condition.
Foods that I was eating were one cause. My ingestion of garlic and spices contributed to a significant part of my “after lunch” head sweating sessions.

Additionally, I wasn’t taking advantage of specific sweat wipes that are gently applied to the face to prevent the perspiration. These worked like a charm.

Thirdly, I didn’t know the specific mental exercises to calming down my anxiety which caused the sweating to continue perpetually and profusely.
