Surveying the Bridesmaids

January 31st, 2009 @ 5:45 pm by Ms. Dahlia

Yes, I know, long time no post. One of these days I really will get around to finishing my wedding recap…

Anyways, on to more practical wedding planning things! I’m a bridesmaid in my brother’s wedding, and his lovely fiancee sent out an email earlier this week about appropriate attire.

An excerpt is as follows:

“I think I have talked to all of you about possibly getting dresses from J.Crew, and it seemed like everyone liked the idea. So, I have created a survey to find out which styles and colors you all prefer. We do not have official wedding colors so things are pretty flexible… all we know is we want things to be colorful and summery! On the survey I choose the 4 colors that I liked the best initially… but feel free to comment on other colors if you like something else (I don’t pretend to have good taste).

I like the idea of having different styles in the same fabric so you can choose a dress according to what you will feel comfortable in. So here’s the link to the survey… you will want to have the J.Crew website open while you are taking the survey so you can see what I’m talking about!”

Absolutely brilliant. The survey (created at SurveyMonkey) asked questions about fabric and color choices. Since J.Crew’s short bridesmaid’s dresses range from $150 to $285, depending upon fabric style, she also asked about the affordability of the dresses.

Has anyone else created an online survey for any part of wedding planning?

The very first time I was a bridesmaid, the bride sent us a survey via e-mail to pick out a style of dress and our color preferences (she ended up putting us in the most popular style in two different colors and it was pretty!).

wow, that’s a unique way of handling the BM dress situation. is your brother’s fiancee, perchance, a phd student like you? :-)

This would have been a great idea two weeks ago! Fortunately, it all worked out without the survey, but it would have made it easier!

I survey my BMs about EVERYTHING-what kind of jacket they would like to wear, what kind of pearl jewelery/black shoes they own, sash or no sash, opinions on my finery (veil, etc.)! The only trouble is, sometimes the bridesmaids kind of take over & things become more overwrought than they need to be. I realized it is often best to a) chose your own finery (the look you like best) & b) choose things for them on your own: (i.e., Here is the black dress I would like you to wear, please purchase it by such & such a date.) My constant annoying surveying has backfired a couple of times.

I never knew of that website, but will remember it for the future! And talk about a great FSIL!

I think it’s wonderful to take BMs into consideration when picking a dress. There were several weddings I was in where I was uncomfortable in the dress (physically and socially). So when my turn came to be the bride I left my ladies help me pick the color- and then let them each choose the style of dress they wanted in that color.

I survey all the time! I use http://www.polleverywhere.com where people can use text messages or web voting. Its way better than survey monkey!

I let my bridesmaids pick the colors! I created a survey (though not through a survey site) and gave them four colors and asked them to pick the two they liked and also to say whether there were any color combos they hated (all the dresses are two tone). There were 3 first place votes for two different color combos which made it super easy! Then, they all got to pick out their own styles of dresses. I think it worked out well!

That is a really great idea! It seems really considerate to get the bridesmaids opinion, and probably makes things a little easier and less confusing by doing it electronically.

That was such a good idea! A wedding FH and I went to a year ago did a survey on their wedding website for what the favors should be… candy won.

What a lovely, organised bride! I’ve only been a BM once, and my sister (the bride) was sooo laidback it was quite funny. But you sort of expect all brides to be a bit more “I want! I want!” than this - I guess it’s all those stupid reality Bridezilla shows!

That’s a good idea! I haven’t discussed anything with my bridesmaids, I’m kind of worried because I know they won’t want the same dress.

It is always a good idea to consider your bridesmaids’ personality and taste when picking out items for them. Surveying would be best but you may also try bringing them when shopping. Let them choose according to their desire, but also make sure that those fits to your wedding colors.
