Hi, my name is Mrs. Peony and I once blogged for a site called Weddingbee…
I hide my face in shame. I am not worthy!
Sorry for my disappearance from the hive. 2008 was a crazy year! I married my best friend and partner in crime. I became involved in a great variety of personal, professional, and spiritual activities. We became homeowners. We watched our home value tumble along with the rest of the nation. We cussed the recession and screamed, “Off with their heads!” to whoever might be responsible for said recession… err, I’m getting off track.
But yes, I couldn’t help but return because I just rubs Weddingbee too much! Feel that wind whipping at your face? That’s me, back in full force!
And I come bearing wedding day recaps.

As I sat and watched the Golden Globes, I couldn’t help but notice all the white/ivory/champagne dresses on the red carpet. Maybe since I am a bride-to-be I was more acutely aware of these dresses, but I like to think that the stars wished they were brides-to-be themselves.
So here are my nominations for best bridal-like appearance:
Best Vintage Glam:

MOH and Flirty Bridesmaid left with two extra-special packages to give to Mr. Pomegranate as a wedding day gift. The first of which was a super-secret surprise I had kept hush-hush for many months: a special boudoir shoot. The fabulous Sarah Maren and I holed-up in a chic little room at my favorite midtown bed and breakfast, The Inn at Parkside. Each room has a theme—ours was the “Kiss” room.

The Inn at Parkside
The rooms here are so chic and inviting!
Since my post, What Type of Bride Are You?, garnered so many interesting and fabulous responses, I thought I would do a follow up post about how brides express themselves through the “art” of their dress. I’ve stressed time and again how brides today have so many options when it comes to dress design, silhouette, and details. But in reality, this is only true if you put the time in to do your research. During my dress search, I found that despite all of the pretty pictures I spotted in magazines, 98% of affordable wedding dresses looked sorta the same: strapless, white, and long. This frustrated me because although I wanted something simple and timeless, I was busy drooling over $6,000 gowns when my pocketbook said, “Spend no more than $1,000.” And the $1,000 or less pile was filled with essentially the same gown re-created over and over again. {Sigh}
So, the purpose of this post is to get the creative juices flowing and to showcase affordable reader dresses that step outside the box. Or maybe you didn’t “step outside the box”, but found a dress that spoke to you… for whatever reason. Or maybe you made your own dress or found a way to alter a pre-existing gown and make it your own. Or maybe you decided to wear or re-create your mom’s dress. {Love that concept, by the way!}
I truly believe that some of us want to individuality when it comes to dresses, but get intimidated when we walk into bridal stores and see the same stuff time and again.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
Do you ever stop and think, “Wow, I really can do whatever I set my mind to,” and thank the countless women who came before us to make that possible? Seventy-one years ago, Miss Ford applied to Walt Disney Productions as an artist. She received the letter below and it just blew me away. She was told that women don’t do any of the creative work for Disney Cartoons but she could apply to be an “inker” or “painter” and fill in the drawings… but those places were limited and lots of “girls” apply.

After the speeches and the dances, Mr. Pinot Noir and I attempted to steal another moment alone but it wasn’t long until our photographer caught up with us! Since we ran out of time during the cocktail hour it was a great chance to get some photos of just the two of us.

So, my first job as a teenager was as a pizza delivery girl. It was fun, I made great money, and I met some nice people at the pizza shop. My second job was as a flower girl. In the summer, Vail is booming with gorgeous flowerbeds and arrangements along the public walkways and streets, and I worked for a company that was responsible for keeping the town in bloom. It was by far my favorite job, and there are times I wish I would’ve ditched the whole Optometry school thing for a flower shop. Along the way, I got to work with fresh flower arrangements as well, and I loved creating arrangements for people to enjoy in their homes.
A wedding bouquet is really no different, and can definitely be an area to save some money if you’re willing to arrange your own flowers. I found this helpful video in the about.com Style section that does a wonderful job explaining how to make your own bouquet.
Here’s what you’ll need:
When we pulled up to Hotel 1000 the valet station was crazy! Many of our guests were all arriving at the same time and since the hotel is located right in the middle of downtown Seattle they don’t have the capacity to handle more than 3 or 4 cars pulling up at once. The valet started to wave us forward, as if to say, “circle around the block and try again in a few minutes,” but this bride knew what she was paying for so I hopped out right in the middle of traffic. As soon as they recognized me (for the past three days they had all been calling me by name, but the big ivory dress helped as well) they ran over and helped us both out of the car. Don’t mess with the bride, boys.
My bridesmaids came over with my emergency bridal backpack and started to spray me down. My hair was getting rather snarly by this point because every time I gave someone a hug they put their arm around my neck and tugged on my veil.
On this day, one year ago, Mr. Magnolia and I said, “I do,” in front of 185 of our closest friends and family.
Tonight, we will celebrate with just our pup, Knowshon, and the bottle of Dom Perignon that Mr. Mags’ aunt gave us as a wedding gift. What a year it has been.

Now we’re all caught up! After the run, was I fully satisfied with my dress? The one that my team and I worked so hard to find? No, of course not. I decided to keep trudging through.
Oh! At this point in the saga, Miss Latte officially became a Miss Latte-to-be! With a beautiful ring planted firmly on my finger, I felt a renewed sense of energy… post-run, I visited a total of 16 bridal salons across 3 states. I can’t even count how many dresses I tried on… or how many times I’ve tried on the same dress. I was lost.
As a reward for reading this far, I will spare you the details of each visit. Instead, I will share with you the highlights and experiences that were the catalysts in finally (FINALLY!) deciding on my dress.
Mr. Latte, you know what to do.

So I know Mr. D’orsay probably doesn’t want this splashed around the internet, but… he went to see Bride Wars with me this weekend!

I can’t really begin to explain how grateful I am for him. If we were in America I would have gathered my bridal crew, recently engaged friends, and those who favor chick flicks, and the whole posse would have gone en masse. MOH MB and I would laugh and say how we could never end up like those two and talk about the dresses (I’m sure we both would pick Anne Hathaway’s). However, I tend to miss out on those experiences here in the UK because I don’t actually have any friends….

I’ve been fighting against the idea, reality, necessity of planning our wedding since virtually the moment we started talking about marriage. I’ve fought it with every ounce of my being, every cell in my body, every negative emotion I can summon, every bit of brain power and reasoning that I can bring to the task of avoiding the inevitable.
I want to marry him. I want to be his wife, for him to be my husband. But I’m scared. I’ve failed before, and refusing the simplest of wedding-related tasks is somehow my talisman against more failure… and to be even more honest, a way of avoiding my embarrassment. We don’t really get to begin with our slates wiped clean, no matter how amicable the divorce or well learned the lessons are. People remember, people were there, I was there. I floated through my first wedding like a bystander, content to have planned a really great party and entirely missing the sentimentality that I love about life. That makes sense — in my early 20’s, I craved emotion and sentimentality while managing to avoid it like the plague.
And now?

So, around the New Year, Miss Meatball and I not only had the pleasure of meeting each other in “real life”, but the supreme pleasure of meeting Chicago Bees L and C, as well as Miss Meatball’s MOH MaPo! Margaritas, queso, and delicioso Mexican food was the order of the day! We met up at Uncle Julio’s Hacienda in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood—since Mr. Meatball used to work there, Miss Meatball had the inside scoop! We had a great time getting to know each other, and I can’t wait for our next Chi-town meet-up! Here are a few pics from the day…
Reader bellina is selling a Bridal Lengha. It has never been worn before (only tried it on). It is gold with a burgundy border, an is quite heavy. She is asking for $1000 or best offer.

After being engaged for over eight months, we finally let my sister and brother, along with their collective families, throw us an engagement party! It actually ended up being a celebratory weekend since both our families flew in from out of town.
Brother Peep picked out the invites from Wedding Paper Divas. They were perfect for a summer Engagement Party!!
We kicked off the weekend by hosting a dinner at our house; most of the family had yet to see our apartment (including my Dad) even though we had been living together for over a year.
