Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.
About Mrs. Perfume

Loosely. Flowers!

February 1st, 2009 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Perfume

It was a beautiful fall weekend in last November when we went back down to the Homestead with Mr. P’s parents to work on the rehearsal dinner and meet with the florist, Martha of Gillespie’s flowers.

Anyhoo, it was an easy meeting, as I already knew what I wanted, but was flexible in many ways. Just as long as it’s loose and natural, then I’m okay (I think).

Flowers by Saipua

In the beginning, I didn’t think much about the flowers. Roses. Relatively inexpensive, easy, maybe a bit conventional. Then, I wanted big, garden-fresh flowers like peonies.

Source

A little more expensive, but less conventional.

Then I thought, LILY OF THE VALLEY. But, those are extraordinarily expensive. The ROLLS ROYCE OF FLOWERS. And as the style for the wedding evolved, I realized that I wanted something maybe a little simpler, more architectural:

Mini CALA LILLIES.

Source

I do like a smaller bouquet that’s trumpet shaped, rather than ball-shaped. For the rest of the decor, I’d like them loose, NATURAL, branchy, with vines, greenery, and not too matchy matchy. I’m sure my tastes will change as the planning progresses. They already have…

What was your flower evolution? What did you originally want and what did you finally decide on?

Peony girl here. Love em! But if they’re gonna be an issue with where we have the wedding, will do garden roses (peony roses) and I will have magnolia leaves supporting the flowers under the flowers, barely peeking out. Maybe one magnolia if we can swing it in the bouquet. I grew up in north MS and T’s family home is in Ms so a nice nod to our home state.

I’ve always been fond of variety of flowers, but the PEONY has now won my heart and has become my official flower for the wedding and everything else!! I love its big, beautiful bountiful blooms and all the variety of shades it comes in. And it’s named after Paean, a physician who treated Pluto of his battle wounds in the greek mythology, which is perfect since I myself am also a physician!! It was meant to be. :)

I was of the loose, simple, elegant bouquet mindset. I ended up with mango callas, much like the calla example you have, but instead of the wrapping going so high up the stems I had white freesia to soften the look before the wrap. Against my wishes, the florist used hypernicum berries with the freesia(apparently because it made the flowers lie together better/easier). I was very pleased with the end result, though!

It was my orange to compliment the groom’s light blue vest and cravat. He then had orange freesia with blue delphiniums and we continued working the orange/white/blue colors through all the other attendants’ and parents’ flowers… tmi? Wedding details are hard, once you start…! :)

Gorgeous, as usual! :) I am still all over the board with flowers. Not sure what I want to spend, what I want, etc. etc. etc. sigh.

I also love peonies but they were not an option at my October wedding. My second favorite flowers are hydrangeas which were used in the bridesmaid bouquets and in the arch. The arch Stems Chicago designed was stunning. You can see an overall picture in photo number 580 at http://www.pictage.com/368625 event key laura. There are other close ups which show the berries, etc. but this is the best overall picture.

I was originally in LURVE with calla lilies. Now, I know I want NO lilies, NO roses!

I’ve been on the ranunculus, peonies, anemone kick for some time now, and I’m 99% sure that’s what I’ll have for my May wedding.

um so yeah, i saw an idea to combine your b-day month’s flower & your groom’s (calendula–what is that?!) in your bouquet. and mine is….lily of the valley. the 1st time i saw a pic of them, i loved them–they were photographed amongst all of these really ornate bouquets, & i thought hey those look like wild flowers, i bet they’re pretty cheap. WRONG! a boquet is about $225 IN SEASON. plus they are only in season for 2 weeks in may or something & my wedding is in late june. boo!

I originally wanted COLOR, but then decided to go more classic (white, with some light green hydrangea) for my bouquet, and leave the color to the BMs.

I love Cala lillies! My flower idea are still evolving. I know I want a red and purple bouquet but that’s about it. It’s constantly changing. I’m now at the one-to-three flower bouquet stage, something more minimalist. But I’m sure it’ll change. I just want to go with the flow.

So beautiful! We have similar taste when it comes to flowers. I was laughing when you said “ball shaped” bouquets. Not what I’m interested in either.

@DrDazey: I love the bit of meaningful historical trivia

@Mary: THANK YOU! *blush*

@christinajg: sounds beautiful!! it’s good to gush…gives everyone a good visual!!

@Miss Quiche: Isn’t it exhausting trying to figure it out??! I’m really tired!

@laura: Wow! You had a beautiful wedding, Laura! Love the arch, the theme, the colors…and even the signs were great!

@MagPie518: I’m thinking the same thing. I JUST CAN’T DECIDE!!

@TechGirl: I’m just like you on that point.

@Miss Glitter: heh.

Initially? Yellow wildflowers with greenery, NO roses (not my fave, aesthetically speaking), NO all-white bouquet. Just something very free and easy and a smidge rustic.
Then I thought, well hell, I’m cheap, I’m crafty, I’m going to see what I can’t whip up out of paper.
And MS’s crepe paper roses? So very nice looking.

So now it’s a mixture of yellow and white crepe paper roses and other styles of crepe paper flowers in a more structured shape than I was originally going to go for. But the price is right, so it’s fine with me. ^_^

I used to love calla lillies, but now I think I want something more earthy and country…. Just a big, beautiful bouquet of fall flowers. The maids will have all orange, and mine will be orange with pops of green. And I’m thinking orange ties for the men, with green for Mr. Lobster.
