Boutonnieres!

February 2nd, 2009 @ 2:48 pm by Mrs. Kitten

I’m not crazy about the idea of spending a lot of money on flowers for the wedding. Not only are flowers expensive (especially in Grand Cayman, where everything has to be shipped in!), but they just aren’t very useful and they die! With the ocean providing a beautiful, natural, setting for the wedding, we are going to try to spend as little on flowers as we can. I’d rather spend that money on some other frivolous item, like lounge furniture around the dance floor, or pretty twinkle lights inside the tent.

One idea I have for saving on flowers is buying handmade boutonnieres and corsages off of Etsy. At 13 bucks a pop, I can’t imagine that they are any more expensive than fresh flower boutonnieres. Plus we can either resell them after the wedding (would it be tacky to have someone track down the groomsmen and ask for them back?) or have everyone keep them as keepsakes from the wedding. Here is one I found on Etsy, and it is conveniently in the aqua and poppy color scheme! Isn’t it cute?!

Are you considering non-live florals? Where are you buying them?

If I thought my fi would go for it I would love to have some of the felt and button items that weddingbeepro princess laserton makes. So great and unique.

Have you looked into the price of boutonnieres on Grand Caymoa? You may want to look if price is the reason for fabric bouts. (They are super cute though). I’ve been to a couple of florists (in Michigan) and haven’t been quoted more than $8 a boutonniere. They were much less than I expected. I guess it depends on which flowers you are using too. Ours will be roses and/or peonies.

$13 is pretty expensive for non-flower bout. Our’s with white roses are only costing $6 a piece. That is wrapped in black ribbon and everything. I would def check prices with your florist first.

Yes, that’s quite cute! We’re most likely going with pocket squares — or no “garnish” at all (just fun colored ties with the tuxes).

We’re going non-floral as well… I went to a wedding last weekend and the bouts were all crushed about 20 minutes after the wedding with all the hugs. I thought non-floral might wear better :)

If you want a keepsake or re-sellable item, then go with those, they are really cute! Also, Twigs&Honey books up - which may help you resell, since her designs are in such high demand! But on the same token, if you’re going to order these from her then you should order really soon so you can make sure she can process your order :)

Oh, and also, maybe if you order all of your stuff at once you can work out a custom price? It’s worth a shot!!

I made our bouts, using dried flowers, vintage cotton mushrooms, and millinery flowers and leaves. Similar in appearance to the one you posted, only in greens and browns. :)

i’m using clay flowers for all the bouts and bouquets. it was cheaper than real flowers and i was given a really great quote with the real flowers. i’m using blossoms from etsy. just PM me if you’d like more info.

That bout is adorable!
I was considering using fake flowers for my bouquet but then I realized that those are the ONLY flowers I’m really really REALLY picky about. I want white roses and all the fake ones I’ve found have pink or yellow edges and that’s not what I want AT ALL! I never thought I’d be picky about flowers but I am! haha

I’m totally considering handmade bouquets and boutonnieres! I’ve been drooling over Princess Laserton’s creations too!!

I have not been quoted more than $8 for a boutonniere. I don’t think the guys would care to keep them, so personally I think $13 for one is a bit much.

Great idea! I’m still in shell shock over the cost of flowers…this is a great alternative!

Since we’ll be doing all the flower arrangements I’m actually still considering using non-live flowers, even for the bouquets. boutonnieres are really easy to make, so if you have the time you can make them yourself and it will save you a bit. Another idea is not using flowers all together and just using greenery instead.

P.S. I love etsy!

I would love to go non-floral and make all my flowers (I know I’ve mentioned this before, so sorry for repeating myself) out of paper, but I just don’t have the time :-/

We’re skipping the bouts altogether! The boys won’t care, I don’t care, and I doubt anyone will notice. Does anyone notice the boutonnieres at weddings?

Adorable! Another benefit of not ordering flowers at your destination: you don’t have to deal with the trauma of getting something that did not live up to your expectations. I say go for non-live bouts!

Boutonnieres in Grand Cayman start at $15. Everything has to be shipped in from overseas so it adds costs. I will either buy them from Myra or make my own :)
