About Mrs. Bee

Classifieds 2.0

February 2nd, 2009 @ 2:10 am by Mrs. Bee

Weddingbee Classifieds has been taking off lately. We were especially amazed to see the Weddingbee Classifieds featured this weekend in the New York Times!

So we thought we’d review all the feedback we’ve gotten so far, and make the changes you’ve been asking for.

ABILITY TO CLOSE LISTINGS

Gracers asked, “Mrs. Bee, How do I close a posting? I ended up just adding a comment to my post on the free engagement session but we’re still getting E-mails.”

Now you can close any listing by changing its Status to “Inactive Listing”. Well not just anyone can close a post; you have to be the person who added the listing in the first place.

Inactive listings have their status highlighted in red text when you view them. Hopefully that will cut down on emails after an item has sold!

BETTER CATEGORIES

Bride asked, “The classified ads are getting so packed that it is so hard to sift through. is there a way we can have categories for the items for sale? for example, “bridal attire” vs. “decor” vs. “jewelry” etc?”

Sure thing. We added new categories!

We also reclassified hundreds of recent listings by hand, to ease the transition. :-)

Now you can browse only wedding dresses, or only shoes:

It’s pretty neat seeing all the classifieds sorted into categories.  I had no idea there were this many listings for bridesmaid dresses!

EVENTS

While we were at it, we noticed that there have been some bridal shows, sample sales, and trunk shows posted to the Classifieds. So we created an “Events” category, to help organize those posts and encourage new ones. We’ll see if it’s helpful or not; if so, we’ll keep it around!

EXTRA FILTERS

It’s always been pretty easy to see all the items that are “For Sale” versus “Looking”. We wanted to preserve that - so we added filters to every page of listings, that let you filter the listings so you see ONLY the posts that are “for sale” or “looking”. You can filter all our listings, or just the ones in a particular category:

So for example, you could see all the bridesmaid dresses for sale here (as opposed to the ones that brides are looking for).

Hopefully you’ll find it as useful as we do!

————-

The new Classifieds have been live for a few hours now, and everything seems to be working smoothly! We’ll be re-sorting old listings into our new categories over the next few days. In the meantime, we’ll leave our old For Sale, Looking, Free Offer, and Vendor categories around! You should be able to access all old listings off the frontpage.

Hope you enjoy… and let us know what you think!

Very helpful to have a way to close a listing.

2 other areas that there are problems with -
HTML code when you cut/paste text. Mrs. Penguin had a tip for people who use PCs to avoid this but there is no info for people who use MACs how to avoid this.

It may be there, but I can’t see where you can edit an attachment. If you upload a photo and it doesn’t work or uploads halfway there is no “delete attachment” button, so you end up with a lot of attachments and half of them don’t work.

Both these issues were mentioned by others in Mrs. Penguin’s sticky on the classified board so I think there are probably a few people that have had both of these problems

Sure, we’ll look into an automated way to strip extra HTML code out of posts. We’ll also look into upgrading attachments so that you can delete your own images.
