Mrs. Perfume's Picture
Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.

Handmade Bridesmaids Dresses: Part 1

February 2nd, 2009 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Perfume

Originally, I was planning to have the bridesmaids order this dress:

Source

But the problem was that the dresses would have come from a discount online retailer that does not provide fabric samples! (Note: Avoid anything too shiny, sexy, or trendy if going this route, because the cheapness, I imagine, would be obvious.) I was almost fine with it—tossing the dice on the color—because I liked the empire waist and the soft, drape-y crepe fabric. BUT, I had second thoughts last weekend when I visited my mother, who, from the very beginning, offered the option of making the BM dresses for us.

So, we went to a couple fabric stores. The first was G Street Fabrics, a regional chain, I believe. They had a good selection, but the prices were between 15 and 30 dollars a yard and I didn’t see the blue-ish green that I’d envisioned. And at 12 plus yards total, the girls would be better off buying their dresses…

But wait! Mom knew of this GREAT hole-in-the-wall place (an amaaaaazing secret find) where, instead of paying $20 a yard… I paid $2.50 a yard. You heard me, I said TWO DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS A YARD! And this was good stuff. AND… I found THE EXACT COLOR CREPE that I’d been thinking of, but didn’t think existed without a special order or an additional digit added to the price. I’m not sure how they make any money! Perhaps it’s the tiny, tiny space, stuffed to the gills with fabric and notions! There was barely any room to move!!! I found it ridiculous and charming all at once! There was seam tape from the fifties and sixties,

and a bunch of vintage machines, thread, fabric, and zippers… just all thrown about!

I don’t think the shop owner knows what a gold mine he has. And that’s just as well. A young woman looking for crafting, Etsy-type stuff, and I, both agreed that this little fabric shop is the best-kept secret in town! Here are some shots of the store, and some of the notions, including cups for the tops of the dresses (to prevent the cliched wardrobe malfunction), some almost-matching zippers, cream-colored crepe lining, and the PERFECT COLOR OF ROBIN’S EGG CREPE. It was so cheap that I bought the entire bolt of fabric! I love these finds!

It was utter disorganization, yet the shop owner and his helper seemed to know where everything was. And that’s perfectly fine with me. All told, I purchased everything, with tons of extra fabric to spare (I could probably make five dresses) for less than $100!!! And, I can now avoid the awkward conversation on who will pay for the bridesmaid’s dresses…

Have you or someone you know made bridesmaids dresses?  How did it go?

Will you use a similar pattern to the dresses that they were going to buy? Pretty!

What a fabulous discovery! I’m also seriously considering having my mom make my BM dresses, unless I’m able to find some for cheap that don’t look cheap at all. Have you selected a pattern already, and if so, what book did you find it in? Thanks, Miss Perfume!

Wow, your mother must be very talented! And I love the higgledy-piggledy look of the store (almost as much as I love the word “higgledy-piggledy”).

Perfume, I love it!! That is incredible…I can’t believe you found it for that cheap! You can have your mom make you a dress as well & save it for some future function :)

My friend’s wedding that I was a bridesmaid in, we had our dresses made for us. They turned out pretty well, too! As bridesmaids, we paid for the cost of the materials. The labour was supposed to be a wedding present to the bride, but a week after the wedding the lady who made them gave her the bill! But I think you’ll be okay because it’s your mum doing the work.

My mom made the (3) BM dresses for my brother’s wedding. They were about $30 each and beautiful - much nicer than what we could have gotten for six-times the price. My mom did them as a gift, so the bride’s family and the BM’s didn’t pay for anything. The only issue I remember was trying to get one of the BMs to show up for a fitting. I offered the same deal to my MOH (I only had one BM), but she preferred to buy something off the rack.

Is this store in the DC area? I have been shopping for fabrics for a variety of DIY wedding projects and would love to know the secret identity of the store!

Great find! :) How nice of your mom to make the dresses! I made bridesmaid dresses once, for a coworker. It was fun, and I got to come to the wedding to see them in action! :)

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding where the bride’s mother made the dresses. The dresses were very cute and I thought it made things just a little sweeter knowing how much work her mom put into our dresses. I will never wear the dress again, so it was also a wonderful not having to pay for the dress.

I would love to see a wedding where the handmade dresses were all made from the same fabric but are different styles, wouldn’t that be fun?

Very cool that your mom was able to help out! And I’m sure it’s more eco-friendly than buying it online. Can’t wait to see the final dresses!

@Heather: @karilynn6: Hey guys, the pattern is very similar to the dress above. It’s pattern v7521 from Vogue!

@alliek: @irishone127: The store is in Virginia in a strip mall! If your’e familiar with the area, it’s in that little ethnic enclave near Seven Corners. The name is Vien Dong Fabric & Tailor Supply, and the address is 6218 Wilson Blvd. Warning: TINY store…and totally fun!

That’s a really cool idea, I guess depending on whose doing them they could look really nice, I’d really like to see how they turn out.

A friend of mine who just got married last November made her three bridesmaid dresses. They came out great! It was fun to hear updates on how everything was going. Though I’m sure she was stressed every now and then, but she did it. She’s a very talented woman. I give anyone lots of credit who can do that especially for their own wedding!

The last thing I need in this world is more fabric (see Mrs Canary’s timely post on hoarding — my issue is fabric and craft supplies), but still it’s great to know. Good luck with the dresses, and thanks for the hot tip!

Thank you so much for this post. I am just a couple miles away also and am returning the table overlay chiffon that I bought at Joann (changed my colors again) ugh.
Thanks!
