About Mrs. Canary

Perhaps a Problem?

February 2nd, 2009 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Canary

I have seriously been thinking about how to reduce the clutter at home and was also inspired by Mrs. Bee’s post on Weddingbee Pro about organization. I have a confession to make: Although we moved over a year ago, Mr. Canary and I still have a room (meant to be our office) that is stacked to the brim with stuff that we keep shifting around the apartment because we, a) don’t know what to do with it, b) are too tired to deal with it, or c) started to work on, but never finished it. The room is at the point where we have to move about three boxes and then climb over a few other items in order to get something. There is no room to work. Ultimately, we deal with it by shutting the door and ignoring it until it starts to bother us again and we attempt to organize it some more, but we never manage to get the job done.

Despite having very specific interests, we accumulate A LOT in keeping up with our collections. My vices include: Etsy finds, paper/stationery, shoes (I own over 60 pairs!), and books. I realize a lot of this has to do with me and less so with Mr. Canary who only has a few dear possessions (CDs and books) and is very nice and never scolds me on my purchases. When I am overwhelmed and try to organize, I tend to see it as an opportunity to go nuts at the Container Store and purchase more junk to hide the stuff I should be getting rid of. It’s a vicious cycle!

And it’s not about being clean or messy. Mr. Canary and I are super clean. We even caved and hired a house cleaner who visits every two weeks, but that didn’t help the office situation much. The bottom line is that although we have a clean home, we just never make the time to really tackle the “stuff” we don’t need or want.

Over the weekend, I picked up a book, Secrets of Simplicity, by Mary Carlomagno, who is actually a professional organizer in the NY/NJ area. It was calling to me at the bookstore (and I totally see the irony of purchasing a book to simplify your life, but it was definitely a great buy). It’s very well written and easy to read. I’m almost halfway done and I started it yesterday. There are worksheets and serious tips, mostly about changing your mindset and habits, and about living a more simple and stress-free life. The introduction talks about a culture of consumerism and how we often end up with more stuff than we need or can handle. I like the questionnaires in the book that ask about things that take up space and time. It also gives you suggestions on refocusing. One of my favorite tips in the book: if you buy something new, keep the tags on it. If you haven’t used it within two weeks of purchasing, return it.

Also, the book categorizes different types of shoppers and how your shopping behaviors affect your lifestyle:

  • Hoarder: accumulates possessions in quantity and hides them away with the intention of using them in the future
  • Cryer Buyer: someone who shops to change his or her mood, gain comfort, receive consolation… basically an emotional shopper
  • Stalker: someone who not only shops in quantity, but spends time researching, obsessing, and pondering his or her purchases. This type of shopper often visits his or her planned purchases several times before actually buying
  • Upgrader: someone who has to have the best, newest, latest, and coolest, even if what he or she currently owns is perfectly functional.

I realize I am a little bit of each of these personalities and the amount of stuff I’ve accumulated since beginning our wedding planning is frankly… frightful! For example, for the wedding we had to set up a registry and we ended up filling it with a lot of housewares we never thought we’d want or needed before, but we did it anyway because that’s what you do when you get married! It’s also the influence of Etsy and the beautiful things I see on blogs every day. It’s so easy to hit click, and voila, the item is in your home in a matter of days. After all these purchases arrive, then you have the problem of where to store them. In New York, closet space is precious! I have become such a sucker for beautiful things that I really need to learn to step back and admire from afar, and realize that having an appreciation for something doesn’t necessarily mean I have to possess it.

So as a goal this month, I plan on finishing the book and applying its mantras to my home and life. First, I will attempt to purge all the unnecessary things from the apartment and finally get our office into shape! And maybe if it gets too overwhelming, I may just have to call Mary for a house visit to kick my butt into shape. It’d be like getting a personal trainer for the apartment. And second, this month, I plan on not buying anything that adds clutter to my life. No goodies from Etsy or eBay. No online or in-person shopping. I will attempt to shop my own closet!

What kind of shopper are you? Have you noticed a change in your shopping habits since you started planning your wedding? What are some of your organization/simplification solutions for your home and life?

I read a great book called “Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping” by Judith Levine a year or so ago. Although the book is not realistic for most people, it really stuck with me. After I read it, my best friend and I instituted a policy where we only give each other Christmas/birthday gifts of things we either have at home already or stuff that’s been gifted to us. Crafty projects are included, too, as is food. We’ve both come up with really creative things right out of our own closets/kitchens!

We buy so much STUFF we just don’t need. Although wedding planning has brought out my inner consumer, I try to remind myself that there are some things that just aren’t needed… i.e., the fire engine red Kitchenaid Mixer that will look amazing in my kitchen, if only I actually had room for it.

the wedding has definitely funneled my purchases towards wedding related items (stationery, postage), but i find myself trying to justify a purchase as being “wedding related” when it is clearly not (like another pair of shoes, some new pens, a new purse). i heard that a good way to keep from accumulating things is that if you buy something, give something away. this works really well when purchasing clothing.

I purge like crazy and donate clothes, shoes, anything I don’t use to Housing Works. But in Manhattan, you never ever have enough space.

I actually just gave Mary a call — I’ll let you know how it goes! I could definitely use a system for our clothes. :)

I tend to be a combination. Since beginning wedding planning, I find that I’m always on the look out for something to use in the wedding; sometimes I buy with the notion that “I’ll figure out some way to use it…”. So far, this has worked out in my favor, but I think it could backfire at any point! In regards to my shopping for things not wedding related, the wedding has me watching my spending. I find myself not buying things just because I like it at the moment or it’s a great deal. I’m more conscious of where my money is going. For those things I really long to buy, I just keep reminding myself that we have to have something to put on the registry! I hold on to everything forever, by fiance is a minimalist; moving in together will be tough on both of us!

Thanks for mentioning my book. It is no small coincidence that I did a recent closet purge (both mine and my sons) and found a new charity in Hoboken that donates stuff to those in need. The charity is called “The Jesus Name Charities” In this time of transition, it feels good to pass along to those in need…

Great post, Mrs. Canary! We also have a room like that, even though we moved in 8 months ago! Thanks for the tips & links. :)

I can really relate to this post, it’s as if I wrote it myself. I am a hoarder and stalker buyer while my husband is an upgrader. I save everything and am learning to throw things away. I still have clothes and personal belongings in boxes even though we married in 2007.

I definitely want to know how it goes! I am really drowning in my office (or lack thereof) and it stresses me out so much.

Count me in as a Hoarder. And I’m so happy to hear some others have a room like that — ours has been jam-packed with boxes since I moved my large 2br apartment into Mr T’s TINY 2br after the wedding. We now really need it as a nursery, but it’s a killer project when there’s just nowhere to put anything!! (We do make charity donations at least 2x a month.)

oooh, I’m such a cryer buyer. It’s ridiculous. I just went out and spent almost $100 on new skin care because I was feeling lonely!

But I’m so good at getting rid of junk that 6 months after I give away clothes I haven’t worn in a little, I’m wanting them back!

I’m a stalker. Unless it’s a huge, one day only sale, I’ll visit an item several times before I buy. I’ll look it up all over the place online, and I’ll think about what I would use it for and whether I really need it (and what else I could use its money for. So for me, that keeps the clutter down. I usually end up losing the lust I originally had for something I really didn’t need at all.

Another purger here. I love to just go through every space in our apt and get rid of what we don’t need. I actually need to do it again soon as I’ve noticed a surplus of stuff lately that we just don’t need. Best of luck on your efforts. Keep us posted!

I read another book called “One year to an Organized Life” which really helped me because it breaks down the tasks of organizing specific rooms into digestible activities. I don’t particularly love the writing, but the ideas are sound and good. Also, I have learned to throw things out. I am constantly purging, reviewing my “stuff” and thinking about what I need everyday.
