DW in the DR: The Girls Get Gorgeous

February 2nd, 2009 @ 12:55 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

While the guys were goofing off next door, we were taking the matter of getting ready very seriously… NOT.

When the girls came over to our suite around 10 AM, I was already putting hot rollers in my hair. I was crossing my fingers that it would turn out as well as it had in my DIY hair trial, but you never know, so I gave myself lots of time. Plus, call it a sixth sense, but I just knew that there would be some last things to take care of that I hadn’t planned for. I didn’t want to be rushing around too much.

Here I am with my maiden sidekicks (R to L) MOH Pepperpot, SIL and Miss P, soon after they arrived.

1

I took that opportunity of semi-calmness to drag the girls out on the balcony and to give them their gifts. I’m kicking myself that I don’t have any photos of this moment or of the gifts, but it was just one of those things where there was so much going on, and I wasn’t thinking properly. Oh well. I’m sure every bride has a self-kicking moment like this.

Each of the girls received a Tiffany-esque dangly-heart bracelet with her initials engraved on one side of the heart and the wedding date on the other. Miss P and SIL also received Coach wristlets; Pepperpot got a Kate Spade one since she doesn’t love Coach. As a special gift to Pepperpot for being my maid of honor, I made a book of photos of the two of us using Inkubook. And each got a special message I wrote for them, too. I think they were all thrilled and it was nice to spend a little alone time with just the four of us.

Okay, we wiped away the tears and headed back inside - it was time to get back to business.

The hair went off without a hitch (thank GOD) and I proceeded to attempt to recreate my DIY makeup trial.

2

That ring I’m wearing? Mr Breezy pulled me aside before we parted that morning and, in a shaky voice, told me that as a wedding gift he wanted to give me his grandmother’s ring. “It’s nothing fancy and it’s probably not worth a lot,” he said, “but she wore it all the time and it means the world to me. I want you to have it, and I think she would want that too.” *sniff* I’ll never forget that moment. He hides it quite well but I know the truth - Mr Breezy is quite sentimental.

3

Miss P took the hot rollers for a spin too.

4

Whenever we see each other, we spend a lot of time where I say something that I think is hilarious, while she laughs her butt off, but has this look on her face (i.e. you’re cray-zay).

5

Meanwhile, Pepperpot was curling away.

6

Since I was pretty much ready, I also lent the girls a hand.

7

8

Somewhere between ‘dos, I also painted my nails. I wish I had had time to do this the day before, but c’est la vie.

9

Photophil’s sidekick (and nephew) Michael Steingard was taking lots of fun candids the whole time. He was even snapping while I brushed my teeth…

10

…because he thought it was pretty funny that my toothbrush was purple too! Talk about coordination.

11

He also caught me making a dorky face at myself and bronzing up my pipes.

12

Meanwhile, my darling shoes were patiently waiting for me.

13

While we were getting ready, Mama Sea Breeze was spending the day hemming the guys’ pants. Mr Breezy didn’t think it was necessary to send the guys their outfits in the mail before the trip (and I went along with it, reasoning that at least they wouldn’t be able to forget them) but it meant that we had to do some last-minute alterations. Luckily, Mama Sea Breeze and I had both brought that hemming tape stuff that you just iron on. Great minds think alike.

14

MIL Breezy came in to check on us at one point, too.

15

I finally I looked at the clock. It was almost noon. I took a moment to take a deep breath, surveyed the room, and thought out loud:

“Okay, it looks like everything is under control. Whew! Hey wait a second… where are the flowers?? They were supposed to have arrived two hours ago!” So my awesome SIL got on the horn to track them down.

Did you have fun goofing off with your gals while you got ready?

All photos except the first one are by Photophil Steingard and his sidekick, Michael Steingard.

I love the shoe shot — it’s great to see a candid moment (you look like a life-sized doll!) captured along with a “still life.”

I’m so glad you got candids of the “getting ready” time. It looks like you all had so much fun. I like the purple coordination!

Looks like a fun and relaxed morning.

How was your experience with Inkubook? Do you know how it compares with blurb?

@mooreshugar: The key to a laid back getting ready time is do yourself first! Once you’re done and all you have to do is put the dress on, you can relax and have fun.

@lou: @Vic004: I haven’t used Blurb yet but Inkubook had an amazing promotion so I tried it. Parts of it were frustrating, like that you have to upload all your photos one by one and the thumbs are kinda small, but it’s still fairly new. They’re big on customer feedback and I know they’re working on improvements so give it a try. It’s definitely less expensive and the quality of the final product was great.

@Rocío: @Lynn: Thanks! I am sooo relieved it worked out. The tutorial is here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/11/14/easy-wedding-hairdo/

A video would probably be better though, huh? I’ll see if I can find some time to do one.

@E: OH, that dress. Ha ha. I picked it up for $10 at a shop in Vancouver called Lila something-or-other. (I know, ten bucks… you hate me, right? lol)

Everything in this post is just so “easy breezy”. Super corny right? But you did your own hair, painted your own nails, did you own makeup, and you looked SO PRO.

Honestly, hanging out with the girls beforehand was the most stressful part of the day, because they were visibly restraining themselves from trying to force additional makeup on me, knowing that I had informed them that they would be asked to leave if they did that (as I recall, my exact words were “back off or don’t come”). Looking back, it’s so obvious that I picked the wrong people to be my bridesmaids, but it never occurred to me at the time. Live and learn.
