Bridal Envy

February 3rd, 2009 @ 4:51 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

I don’t get bridal envy often for things I know I can’t have, but this particular item has been quite the struggle for me.

Brides with Bangs

Brides - by MsUsUk
(all photos via Rock-n-Roll Bride)

What do these brides have that I can’t have?

Bangs - or “fringe” if you’re in the UK. I can’t get enough of these beautiful brides with their adorable, sexy bangs. I’ve had some type of face framing hair for several years and trying to grow my hair out has been a serious act of willpower. In case you’ve never visited the mid-Atlantic in August, the weather is oppressively humid. No cute bridal bangs for me.

Have you struggled with growing your hair out? Are you considering changing your normal hairstyle/cut for the wedding?

I want “fringe” too but I’m getting married on the beach in North Carolina in June and humidity is a given!
My hair is already long so I’m keeping it like that. Maybe I’ll do the “married cut” later!

Miss D’orsay, have you been reading my mind? I love how the loose, romantic updos look with side-swept bangs, but I am so scared to have them cut in! I’m working up the courage, though, and may try them out in the Spring. eeep!

I cut bangs last summer so that I could have them for my wedding in April. But now I am worried the rest of my hair won’t be long enough for the style I want. I want to go for something like the pic in the upper right. Gorgeous inspiration!

I adamantly wore my hair exactly the same for the wedding as I do every day. It bugs me when brides refuse to look like themselves.

YES. AND YES. I had bangs until recently! I’m growing my hair out for the wedding…and yes, the humidity had something to do with the decision to grow out the bangs! I’m with you in this bang envy!

I love the bangs and always wished I could have them. I have super curly hair and my hair is totally unpredictable. It looks different every day (depending on the weather) which makes it difficult to even imagine how it will look on the wedding day.

As a born-and raised mid-atlantic girl, I’m going to say go for the bangs if you love them. I’ve had them for years now (both blunt and side swept) and they aren’t sooo bad. The trick is to use a bit of “root boost” mouse by tigi I think. I have super full hair and don’t use this volumizing mouse anywhere but my bangs, but its gives them a just enough lift and texture to keep them from sticking to my head in august.

@Miss Perfume: I know! I love my bangs, but don’t want sweaty, stringy bits of frizzy hair matted to my forehead. Stupid mid-Atlantic humidity…

I’ll be sporting fringe, as you like to call it, on my wedding day!! But in real life I like my hair short and in a cute bob- in wedding life, I am growing my hair out and it is driving me absolutely batty!!!

i WANT bangs, but if i cut them now, and they look stupid, I won’t have time to grow them out by june! i must say though growing my hair long has been a real pain–i usually have “boy-short” hair, but people keep saying they like my hair long, so who knows-maybe i’ll keep it? i still might have to get extensions just to pull of any sort of bridal ‘do!

Have tried a straight perm? Not the ones African Americans get, but the Asian ones. It’s so hassle free with its “wash and go” effects. Your hair stays straight but still has natural movements. Plus, you can always curl it with a curling iron! The only down side is you have to do it a few weeks (at least 4) before your big day, otherwise, your hair will lie flat on your head with zero volume!

Girl, you are preachin to the choir! I ALWAYS have some sort of bob but I have been trying to grow my hair out so I can have an updo. They are so much easier and they stay. I have really thin hair so I am always envious of people who have thick or even just normal hair. I will probably still need to get some sort of hair piece put in so my hair stylist has some amount of hair to do it with!

I’ve been taking biotin vitamins to grow some more for an updo. I’ve never really had long OR short hair — I change it up frequently, and have everything from short bobs (jawbone-length) to nearly butt-grazing lengths.

Oh if sweat is going to be an issue do NOT have bangs!! My cousin was married last summer and his bride had a “problem” (I’m trying to be nice!) with sweat and her bangs and let’s just say it wasn’t pretty!! She is so sad about how sweaty she looked because of her bangs. Be careful ladies!

I have bangs and I’ve always wished I didn’t need them! I kind of have a big forehead so bangs hide it well. I wish I didn’t have to have bangs as a bride! lol.

I have bangs, and I love them! My forehead is HUGE, so there’s no way I could part with them. :)

I’m with Miss Powder Puff - my forehead has its own zipcode so I can’t live without bangs. But you know, it was really horrendously humid in the DR too and my bangs held it together - it just took some super-strength hairspray. And when I say super, I mean super. Heh.

I accidentally started growing my hair out when my stylist moved and I had a string of bad stylists in a row (and thus, nobody who could get my cut right). I’d had a bob for about 9 years, and now my hair is probably 4 inches below my shoulders. I still have my bangs — love ‘em!

Bangs….I had them FOREVER up until a couple years ago. I just hated having to do something with them, I’ve become very low maintenance..

I am growing my hair long, like it used to always be before a bad perm made me cut it short. for the wedding, i’m planning on having loose curls with some pinned to the side with a flower. I usually never do anything with my hair, just leave it straight or wavy if I don’t feel like doing the flat iron, so its not too far off my daily hairstyle.

Ditto with Miss PP and Mrs. SB!! I wish I didn’t need bangs, but for my large forehead, I NEED something to … “soften the edges”. I’ve found that shorter bangs (which can still be side swept!) work best in humidity. You could always test the waters with thin bangs, right?

Haha, I’ve always wanted my hair long for my wedding, and I usually keep it long. However, with our wedding still over a year away, I just went out and cut it. I think knowing that I wanted it long, made me more ready to just do it now because I knew I wouldn’t have enough time to grow it back out if I waited any longer!

I love all those inspiration pictures! I can’t decide how to do my hair. I’ve kept it long because that is what the mister likes. He’d want me to wear it down and straight, but I love the soft updos.

I’m growing out my hair, too, but keeping my bangs. They feel like “me.”

i am in a constant struggle on getting bangs or not. I just keep remembering those few years in middle school after having short bangs, waiting (and waiting and waiting) for my bangs to grow back out…i think that’s holding me back.

I got the post wedding chop pre wedding so I’m rocking some fringe. Your Bee pic shows you with some pretty rockin’ side bang — but it might be a layer, I can’t tell — either way you should totally go for whatever you want :)

I’m debating whether or not to have bangs. I’m already planning the post-wedding cut. I’m sort of sportin’ the grunge look these days with my locks! :) Agree with lreighard1, I like the side swept bangs in your profile pic. :)

@HumarockBride: Thanks, that is a very good point. We tend to forget that when we see these gorgeous pictures of bridal bangs. Personally I love bangs too, but my hair will be up at the wedding, the last I want is to fuss with it all day.

@lolacola: great idea! thanks for the tip, my hair is desperate for volume :(
@lreighard1: @Miss Piglet: Thanks! That was taken on Halloween when I was first growing them out, I think they’ve gained an inch or so by now. @HumarockBride: That is the exact reason I’m trying to grow them out. :(

I totally want a fringe (bangs, lol, my FI had no idea what I was talking about when I first mentioned it)! But it would have to be side swept…even when I have layers in my hair I end up tucking them behind my ear.
My FMIL and FSIL are both hairdressers so they have big plans for my hair. I just told them to not make it look like prom hair and I would be sold. At least it’s one thing off the list!
I agree with the masses that your photo’s long bangs look is nice! Maybe you can have longer bangs and then pin it so it’s still side swept but under control?
P.S. Halloween party? Was it a school disco? =)

I have long, side-swept bangs (similar to your pic), and I”m planning on wearing them as-is for our winter wedding, just because I know I won’t have to worry about sweat sticking them to my forehead! :) You’ve gotta look like yourself on your wedding day, even if it is yourself turned up a notch!
