DIY Pop-Up Thank You Cards

February 3rd, 2009 @ 6:17 pm by Mrs. Green Tea

I’m finally finished with my thank you cards! It takes only 4 steps to create this simple pop-up, here’s how:

1. Trim liner to fit inside card as desired:

2. Fold liner in half and make 2 parallel cuts perpendicular to the fold line (size and location as desired, I chose 1/2″ to 2/3″ cuts with matching lengths apart):

3. Open liner and push in fold from the cuts:

4. Glue on desired cut out on the fold’s front face:

Voila!

The front of a couple of our cards:

They open up like this (yes, one of them says ’many thanks… for being Awesomest Prime!’):

Photo+Quote cards from the Marriage Celebration Tree were also included with the corresponding TY cards:

I recycled as many materials as I could from the wedding. The signs contributed much to this project:

I used tape instead of glue to secure the signs so that I could reuse the paper and ribbons:

I tried several looks before I ended up with the relatively-easy-to-mass-produce versions you see above. Sewing paper is a huge pain in the butt!

We sealed them with some leftover wedding stickers from my cousin’s wedding. :)

Paper is my least favorite craft so I procrastinated on these forever (in hindsight, I really should have outsourced this). It’s 5+ months after the wedding and I’m just now sending these out! I once heard that I had up to a year to send them out, so I’ve been holding on to that excuse all this time. It ain’t pretty, but it’s done! Woot!

When do you consider a TY card late? Are you giving yourself a time limit for sending out thank you cards?

Is this a Penguin post, or a Green Tea post?

I’ll try to do them all in a month, but if my semester gets too busy, it might be 3-4

Where’d you get those crafty ideas? Were they brewing (hehe) up in your own mind? :-)

Dang. I was going to write about my thank you cards, but now you just make mine look stupid. I mean they kind of were, stupidly simple, but that’s how I do things. You do things in the “super creative recycled chic” way.

Just an FYI - etiquette says you have a year to SEND a present. Thank you notes are expected to be sent promptly - although a grace period is acceptable for presents given at the wedding on account of the fact that nobody should have to write Thank You notes on their honeymoon. :)

very nice job - so simple but it looks so good. For handmade cards, i think you get 5 months no problem. I was so exhausted from making the invites, menu cards, programmes, replies etc. that I used some simple and pretty Thank You note cards that I picked up at Michaels (Brides Magazine line, I think).

We got married Sept 6th and we made it our mission to have the cards out before we sent the Christmas cards out….. so 3 months?

Those are so cute! And mine are written, but 3 months after the wedding we still have not handed some out (we are hand-delivering, just as we did with the invites).

Wow, I would’ve never come up with an idea like this. They look great! And I love that you were able to recycle paper and ribbon you used before.

The TY cards turned out great. I wouldn’t have guessed paper was your least favorite craft :)
I think 5 months is OK, a year seems too long.

Those are AMAZING! I’m bookmarking this one. They’re much more involved than my stamped and embossed thank yous!

Those look great!

BTW, its 3 months from the wedding that you’re supposed to send them out. I don’t know where this 1 year business came from. Someone quoted Emily Post and if you go to the website it says 3 months, not 1 year.

I love the craftiness!

Those look GREAT! I love how they’re all a little different :) I think your guests will see how much time you put into these and understand why they are late.

These are fab! I love the stickers on the envelopes, too.

(Why is everyone thinking this is Mrs. Penguin, btw? Am I missing something??)

I love how resourceful you are by recycling your wedding material. Those are just about the cutest DIY thank you cards ever, and I love the addition of Optimus Prime.
