About Mrs. Latte

J.Crew and I have had a loving relationship for over a decade. She (He? Would J.Crew be a “he”? Nah!) always provided for my every clothing need. When I needed a dress for my high school graduation, who was there? J.Crew. When I needed a suit to wear for my very first job interview, who provided? J.Crew. When I needed “cool” outer wear to impress my friends, who came through? J.Crew. Yup, she has always been there for me with fashionable clothing that keeps me rollin’ in style.

My Up and Down Relationship With Miss J.Crew : wedding new york Jcrewa

(Remember this bad boy from the mid-’90s? This J.Crew anorak was STYLIN’!!!)

Naturally, I turned to her first for bridesmaid dresses to outfit my special ladies. And faithfully, she provided me with some beautiful dresses. Taffeta, cotton cady, and silk chiffon in a wide array of styles and silhouettes. Colors like light flamingo, fresh mint, tea rose and spiced wine in reasonable prices that made me… WAIT, hold up J.Crew. $225 for a taffeta dress? Since when did you get so pricey, missy?!?

Oh, that’s right. I’d been hanging with J.Crew’s stepsister, Miss J.Crew-Sale Rack. I couldn’t possibly ask my BMs to shell out that much for a dress, so as a result, my relationship with J.Crew was severed. We were officially in a fight.

The fight didn’t last long because as I was casually doing some holiday shopping, I came across this adorable satin rosette belt that I had been coveting for quite some time. It was featured in their catalog, but at the whopping price point of $39.50, I decided I was going to make my own version for the BMs. But on that fateful day, they were on sale for $11.99. YESSS! And they had 4 in brown and pink, our wedding colors! Hi, J.Crew… can we be friends again? I quickly snatched up all 4 belts and happily brought them home.

My BMs, the belt and I went on a couple of dress shopping excursions to find the perfect BM dress. After a number of failed attempts, I got an email alerting me of J.Crew’s extra 30% off on their sale and clearance items. I quickly went to their website and found 2 dresses that were perfect for my BMs. I gathered up their size information but by the time I went to order them, the sizes were gone. Boo on you, J.Crew!

So the search for BM dresses continues. But this weekend, J.Crew and I made up again when she introduced me to her little sister, Crew Cuts. I found these light pink flower hair clips, which will be perfect for my BMs:

So, J.Crew and I are buds again. Anyone else have a similar up and down relationship with a store? What are your favorite wedding-related buys?

That’s me with Banana Republic. I love that store, great fitting clothes. The prices, not so nice. I troll around their clearance section whenever I have a chance. Occasionally I splurge, especially when I need a great fitting pair of pants.

I am the J. Crew sale hound! But I’ve had one too many bad experiences with things disappearing from my cart when I went to pay or even after I placed an order, the item is suddenly not available. Plus, I hate it when their site crashes. I have a total love/hate relationship with J. Crew.

No luck with the sale dresses?
Have you looked online?

I got my BM dresses there marked down from $165 to $49.99!

I have that belt too, except mine is yellow and cream. I got it on sale too and sometimes where it as a headband.

I hear ya, Mrs. Canary. I’ve actually ordered things, had my credit card go through, and then have the item completely missing from the package I receive. Their new website is terrible terrible terrible.

I’m totally in the same boat with you on JCrew. Love their stuff but they can’t seem to get the order right the first time around. Long story short, I had to call and e-mail customer service to ensure my order arrives. My BM dresses should be coming tomorrow and I’m crossing my fingers that it does. =)

Yup, I love me some Banana Republic. I’m just a little wary of buying stuff online — who know about sizes? And colors are nearly impossible to discern on a computer screen!

Very cute sashes! Not so sure about the anorak…I never thought I’d say I’m glad the 90s were over! The 80s, sure…

I read an article about how J. Crew hardly sells anything at full price these days. They are still making lots of money selling things at sale prices but they want to get back to selling at full price. They’ve lowered there prices a bit this year (now their ballet flats start at $180 instead of over $200, yipee!), but I think they are still ridiculously overpriced!

I love J Crew and the preppy look - loved it so much had to work there in college just so I can “save” a little! … now thinking maybe even with my full time job I should start again.. bc I’m seeing a dent again.. sigh

J. Crew catalogs are works of art. Have you received the newest issue with Lauren Hutton on the front cover? It is fantastic. I have to wipe off my drool from the pages. It looks like the spring collection is blooming with bright colors and adorable designs!

But I agree that their prices can be over-the-top. While I don’t mind spending $168 on a beautifully made dress, I have a hard time spending $100 and more on a cardigan sweater (especially when the material is flimsy!).

Not to mention that their final sales anger me to no end!

But I did buy my bridesmaids beautiful satin, monogrammed jewelry travelers and flowered flip-flops in our wedding colors! I got a deal on both - it’s the only way I could have afforded them.

@Laura C: Wow, what a great deal! I tried with the sale dresses when they had the Extra 30% off, but the sizes I needed were gone.
@Carolyn: I didn’t see the brown/pink online at all but they were in the store! I found a lot of them over the holidays, but there may still a couple rolling around. Look for them next time you’re in your local Crew!
@Miss Kitten: Interesting..they’re gonna have to lower them a lot more than that to get more full paying shoppers!

I feel the same way about J. Crew and Banana - living near a huge outlet mall absolutely helps ease the tension though :)
