Registries that Rock!

February 3rd, 2009 @ 8:31 am by Miss Snapdragon

This weekend Mr. Dragon and I boarded the wedding gift registry train! As I have said before, we have a multitude of married friends who were more than willing to advise us on the process, and of course, I will pass those learnings on to YOU, my dear Bees! Some of the tips are super basic and common knowledge, but… we might as well cover all our bases in case some of these tips are helpful to you!

Originally, Mr. Dragon and I considered not registering for gifts at all. In case you haven’t heard, there’s a recession going on, and we just felt extra weird about registering, especially since it’s not like we are 18 and just starting out. However, as a close confidant pointed out, we have a guest list of approximately 140 people, and somebody *may* want to give us a gift, so we might as well make it easy on them. This is true. Mr. Dragon and I always send some sort of wedding gift when we are invited to a wedding, and the few times that the couple didn’t register… it was kind of difficult to figure out what to give them, especially if we weren’t best friends with them.

So, onward with the registering.

Mr. Dragon and I got up bright and early, as we expected the process to take all day… which it did! We actually only got through two of the three stores at which we planned to register: the universally popular Bed Bath & Beyond (of 20% off coupon fame!) and Crate and Barrel. We felt that the combination of these two stores provided a WIDE range of price points, and they both had a decent return policy, in case anything shows up broken or otherwise unusable!

Neither Mr. Dragon nor I enjoy shopping (actually, we HATE it!) but we kept a positive attitude and it was actually pretty fun!

We had a mission to be efficient, as the Super Bowl was later that day, and Mr. Dragon refused to be late! Of course, registering wore me out so much that I practically fell asleep about 8 million times during the game (even though it was such an exciting game!)

Bed Bath & Beyond was really user-friendly. Their store was set up in a way that we could be organized in our approach, and they were pretty good in providing a reasonable selection of the home basics that everyone needs. Scannity, scan, scan! We spent about two and a half hours there. (No pictures at BBB - I’m sorry, I forgot!!)

We took a short break for lunch… [Psst, the pear and Gorgonzola pizza at California Pizza Kitchen is delish - not that I, ahem, dine at chain restaurants or anything. ;)]

Then it was off to Crate and Barrel! What I really love about Crate and Barrel is that they have attractive items that run the gamut of price points, and I also appreciate that you can buy things like glasses separately, giving wedding guests the ability to purchase multiple items at an affordable cost.Registries that Rock! : wedding registry Blank01 Align Center

Mr. Dragon vetoed my choice of dessert bowls… (C’mon, can’t you just see an ice cream sundae in those bowls?!)

… but he was on board with the dessert plates!

All right, let’s dish on registry tips… I have a few bits of advice gleaned from the Snapdragon Registry Adventure, along with helpful hints from other married couples that weighed in!

  • Make sure to register at stores that - to the best of your research - are not going out of business anytime soon. All of those people with Linens n Things gift cards? No good anymore! You also don’t want to annoy your guests with dwindling merchandise. Registries are supposed to make gift giving easy and hassle-free.
  • Go nuts with items under $20!!! For us, we actually were able to register for a ton of things we need that priced out under $15, and a decent number for $10 or less. This gives your guests maximum flexibility in terms of cost (if they are dead set on giving you a gift from your registry).
  • See if that place setting or box of glassware you are hoping for comes singly and register for both the full setting and the single items. For instance, a guest may want to gift you a part of your china pattern, but might not want to purchase an entire place setting. If they can buy a few saucers or bowls rather than the entire place setting, that’s helpful. Others (say a family member) may want to buy an entire place setting, in which case you should also give them that option, as well. (Overall, a place setting tends to be a better bargain than buying each piece singly.)
  • As an addendum to the above tip, glassware is a GREAT area to register for singly, rather than as a boxed set. For us, Crate and Barrel sold great kitchen items at $7 or less per item. Again, this helps provide flexibility.
  • Be prepared to spend more than one day registering. Yes, some couples might be superhuman and able to knock everything out in an afternoon, but… wow, that’s amazing.
  • Don’t feel pressured into registering for things you don’t need. Period.
  • Register at one store (or more) that has national visibility. Most brides have a guest list with at least a few out-of-towners. Make it easy on them, please!
  • Check out the store’s return policy. This is a no-brainer, but uber important in the event that an item arrives broken or doesn’t fit into your home as well as you thought it would.
  • Bring snacks! This is one area where we failed big time! By lunchtime, I seriously thought we were both going to faint from lack of sustenance. Must bring snacks!
When we were all done, we were SHOPPED OUT! Registering takes way longer than I thought it would, and we still aren’t done! I am reticent to register at Target - they are affordable and have a number of items that would do the Snapdragon abode some good, but… I have only heard nightmares about their return policy!!! Supposedly this return policy recently changed - what do you Bees think?
Any specific registry tips that might help out other brides about to pick up The Mighty Scanner??

Target’s return policy did change recently, but it still sucks. I wanted to return a wine decanter ($80 value) and a) they don’t do refunds without a receipt and b) they only do exchanges for items up to $35 in value. We are going to sell the wine decanter on craigslist but I’m pretty sure we won’t get $80 for it. If you register for something at Target, I’d make sure it’s something you definitely want because you’ll basically be stuck with it!

Not that I thought registering would be a rockin’ good time, but wow, it did pretty much suck. :) I was exhausted & I LOVE shopping!

great tips! =) We jumped on the registry train this weekend too– and we realized that it really does take alot of thought (and energy!) to make good choices. Thanks for the budget tips you listed out– we were thinking along the same lines. Our motto by the end of the day was if we could NEVER see ourselves buying it– it was TOO expensive!

I am wondering– what is the third store you are thinking about?

@hirsche: Target, but we are really hesitant due to the return policy. We may end up dropping them from our list, or only registering for a few inexpensive things there that we are 8000% positive we won’t need to return. We are still thinking about it!

Despite the reviews my FI and I registered at Target this weekend. We needed an easy and accessible store and this fit the bill in all our guests geographic locations. Our message on our Target page specifically states in a nice way to provide a gift receipt and Targets policy is right there clearly spelling it out. Our message prints out on the registry for those who go into the store.

My friends keep suggesting to not think about “now” when registering - which is great if you have the space to store stuff for future use.

Even though FI hates shopping he definitely enjoyed using the scanner.

I had no idea about Target’s return policy issues!

If you are considering registering for Target, REI, JCPenney, Amazon.com, Gaiam, Mikasa, Cooking.com, Traveler’s Joy, or WeddingChannel.com I would highly recommend registering through http://www.idofoundation.org. It’s a non-profit, and those stores/brands will donate a percentage purchased from your registry toward a charity of your choice. You can give and receive!

Also, I loved registering online, then going to the store to see if they had what I registered for. You can register for 90% of your stuff without going anywhere! There are also “online only” specials that you can get. I totally second BB&B. They are awesome!!

I’m registered at Target, as was a friend who got married last year. They accept returns from your registry up to $250 total, so after you reach that mark you can return them, but only for store credit, and the current value they are selling for.
I agree about only registering at Target for what you’re SURE you’ll keep :)

We went to Crate & Barrel before the super bowl too! It was so empty in there, a great time to shop without tons of people. :) Did you see the cute black felt place mats? Also, they had some really great sheet sets! :)

Our third place was also going to be Target, but I am nervous after hearing about the return issues!

We went pre-Super Bowl registering this weekend as well.. we started with C&B and then went to Macy’s. We were so miserable at Macy’s (both with the long spiel and then the selection that we’re ending up ditching our registry there (though they did give us a free bag..)! We also peeked into Williams-Sonoma and are thinking about actually ditching C&B too and going for W-S instead… has anyone reading this registered there?? We’re going to Bed Bath & Beyond tonight and making that our “main” registry (a lot of the things from W-S/C&B are there but cheaper) and then having some more expensive/nicer things from the other store. AH! And yes, so exhausting…

FI and I registered at Target and BB&B. We decided to go ahead and register at Target for things we know we’ll need. We’re pretty much starting out–owning very few essentials, so I think it was a great choice for us. I learned from a friend to avoid registering for anything truly decorative from there. We stuck with basic kitchen supplies, bathroom accessories and the like. Our dishes, glasses and silverware are all on the registry at BB&B. The two stores have similar availablity in terms of basics, but Target’s prices are usually lower. Knowing the economy is in the toilet, we just couldn’t bear asking our guests to spend a few extra dollars simply because we registered for X at BB&B rather than Target.

On another note, my mom found the OXO salad spinner we’d registered for at Ross for $20 instead of the $30 it was listed for at BB&B. She went ahead and picked it up for us, and I just removed it from the registry when we got home. I’m considering trying to spread the word to guests that they can look at stores like Ross, Marshall’s and Tuesday Morning for our name-brand items at a deep discount. As long as it’s new and it’s something that is specifically on the registry, who cares what name is on the receipt?!

My FH and I are planning to register at C&B too. We worry that since neither of our families live near one, not many people will buy from that registry, though. Do they have a registry completion policy?

You and Mr. Dragon are just too cute, by the by! :)

Thanks for the tips! I agree with 2babc. I started doing online registry with Wishpot.com and am able to compare prices on the same item across different sites. And I also hope to spread the word for guests to shop for items at discount stores as well.

Hehe, my fiance and I registered this weekend too…and it was surprising! I like shopping, but I was sooooo cranky by the end of it. It’s really hard to figure out what you’ll need after you are settled, especially fine china.

Anyway, we registered at Target and Macy’s. I love Target, didn’t know they had a bad return policy, but I can always find use for store credit there.

Macy’s was great aside from the long spiel…I was rushing the woman along because I’m impatient, and we had already told her we registered online and just wanted to see things in person. The GREAT thing about Macy’s is that if you have their Star Rewards card, you will get 5% back on anything purchased off your registry! Then, if you use your Macy’s Visa in-store, they will give you 10% back!! 3 months after your wedding, they’ll give you a gift card w/ all those rewards added up. They also let you choose a charity and if your guests purchase through the registry, they will give up to 3% to your charity of choice. AND, they have bonuses if you register for “X” amount of things by one brand, as well as completion bonuses.
