Mr. Kitten proposed during my first semester of law school. Law firms start recruiting students for summer clerkship positions in the fall, so in October, my entire class was abuzz with talk about law firms, jobs, and grades. Because many firms make offers before first year students receive any grades, students try to use every connection possible to get their foot in the door. One of Mr. Kitten’s best friends has a dad that is a lawyer in Austin (let’s call him Mr. B). I didn’t know Mr. B very well so I didn’t feel comfortable asking him for any favors, but Mr. Kitten insisted that he would pass the word along to Mr. B that I was job hunting.
One day in mid-October, I unexpectedly received a phone call from Mr. B. He told me that he knew I was job hunting and invited me to a recruiting event a few days later at the Four Seasons.
Elated, I immediately accepted the invitation. After accepting, I asked Mr. B what kind of attire would be appropriate for the event. He seemed taken aback by the question and I immediately regretted asking it. This busy lawyer was taking time out of his busy day to call me and personally and invite me to a recruiting event and there I was bothering him with questions about clothes! I quickly settled on a pair of grey pants, a pink sweater, and heels. It wasn’t the cutest outfit, but I thought I looked pretty “business casual” I and hoped I wouldn’t look too out of place at the event.
It was rush hour in Austin as I made my way downtown to the Four Seasons. Sitting in gridlocked traffic, I was jittery about going to my first law firm recruiting event, and nervous about showing up by myself in a room full of strangers. I valet parked in front of the Four Seasons and briskly walked towards the restaurant. There wasn’t anyone around. In fact, it was eerily quiet. The Four Seasons is the swankiest hotel in Austin; the location is picturesquely situated on the banks of Lady Bird Lake. As I headed towards the hotel, I passed a stairway leading down to the lakeside grounds of the Four Seasons. The sun was setting, and cast a warm golden haze over the water. Then, out of the blue, I heard someone softly call my name from the bottom of the stairs. Startled, I stopped dead in my tracks and peered down. And this is what I saw:
