In Love… With Fog?

February 4th, 2009 @ 6:13 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

The weather in San Francisco is unpredictable, at best.

Mark Twain once wrote that the coldest winter he ever spent was the summer in San Francisco. Or, at least that’s what Clint Eastwood said he said in Escape From Alcatraz.

Living along the California Coast for almost my entire life (sans my time in Seattle), I am all too familiar with what is coined as ’June Gloom’. The even more unfortunate problem with June Gloom is that it is also called May Gray. And of course, we are getting married in May.

Last year, on our pre-wedding anniversary, Mr. Peep and I met at our venue for some sparkling wine and delicious cupcakes as a pre-celebration. It was gray, dark and drizzling. Ugg.

The next day, it was a clear beautiful day. And if anyone knows San Francisco—this city rocks when the weather is nice!

That said, I feel like I need to prepare for the inevitable possibility of FOG on our wedding day. The good news is that I have recently fallen in love with a few weddings sporting the gray drizzle that I so fear.

I first fell in love after seeing these pictures on Weddingbee Pro by Punam Bean. Seriously Punam, you make fog look better than a blue sky!!

This wedding has been everywhere recently, and I L-O-V-E it. I know I am biased, as the first picture was taken at our venue, but seriously, I love that she wore a blue dress. These pics were taken by the uber talented Joel Flory:

These pictures just scream ‘San Francisco’ to me.

These next two are from a fun photographer with a cute blog. (And it looks like she works in Chicago and St. Louis too, if you need a photographer.)

This one is yet another picture from a wedding hosted at our venue. Are you seeing a trend here?

Good thing I love it! So I say, bring on the May Gray! I can take it.

Anyone else have extreme weather concerns for their big day?

We live in texas and getting married in May of next year! It could be raining or VERY hot. So we are having an evening wedding and if it rains Mr. FF and I decided that we will get married standing in the rain cause that is like us also! Our guest can leave and go to the party if they like but we will be there standing over the water on our clear stage in the rain saying I DO!

Well, I do have a bit of a *curse* over my head — it’s rained on the majority of important days in my life (everything from when I came home from the hospital as a newborn to proms to graduations), so I think we MAY have to deal with rain. But, at least I’ll have cute umbrella photos!

@miss fleur de lis: i definitely don’t fell bad about that either! except now i want rain so i can go boarding up north. lol.

considering that you’re venue is right by the water, fog may be even more of a risk but those pictures you posted had an etheral feel to them that i think will make your photos all romantic like. i always come prepared for any weather condition in the bay area. you never know what you’re going to get!

I don’t feel bad either! It’s below zero in MN, so freaking cold!

That said, I’d take the fog any day. Our May day will be either rain, sun, snow (who knows) or immense heat. And probably filled with mosquitos.

I’m sort of hoping for some rain, I love how rainclouds and fog diffuse the light so nicely!

Peep - those photos are gorgeous, I can’t wait to see yours - gray or no gray!
@Firefighter_Prazs_Girl: same here! We’ll either have a hot day or rain…here’s hoping it’s dry!

Can you say blizzard?! Boston on January 2 - we are just asking for it! But we also went to our venue on our “pre-anniversary” and the weather was perfect, at least for Boston in January, of nearly 40 degrees and no snow in sight! We almost kind of want snow on our actual wedding day — it’s the day before and after that we DON’T want snow because we want our guests to travel safely!

What gorgeous pictures you’ve found! I went to San Francisco last year for vacation (first time on the west coast), and I absolutely loved it there. Even when the weather wasn’t so great, I was still able to enjoy it. I love the picture of the ceremony with the chairs out and slanted and the beautiful skyline.

I hear you on the unpredictable weather! I’m getting married in August in San Diego - it will either be nice, gloomy or a bazillion degrees… here’s hoping its nice or gloomy :)

Trust me, with a venue like that, you will totally rock the fog… if it comes. The key is all in your expectations — if you know it’s a distinct possibility and are prepared for it then it won’t be a big deal whether it comes or not.

Also, I’m totally with you about the bride in the blue dress. I would have never thought it could look so chic. And the venue! It’s amazing! I love the black chairs they used. I can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

Punam’s photos are gorgeous, and I think SF would be beautiful, foggy or sunny!

We live in LA but decided to have our eshoot in SF. January no less. We met in SF so our hearts really were in SF (that MT saying is really MT). As we were driving across the bridge, I stared at the grey velvet clouds enveloping the city. I told my fiance I wished that the sun would peek through this gorgeousness just once during the day. And it did. When we were on a rooftop overlooking the city. You just can’t plan that stuff.

We are getting married on Oct 10 in Connecticut. Last year it was a balmy 70 degrees but it could be cold or raining.
When I think about having to create a Plan A and B, I am reminded of a friends wedding last June. The weather was glorious. The officiant was almost an hour late. Right after the ceremony began, it began to rain. The venue staff brought big umbrellas and we huddled close to the couple. My friend said that was the moment that everything felt right. It was less “a ceremony” and more of taking her vows surrounded by family and friend (literally). Not two minutes after the ceremony did the sun burst through the clouds. Amazing. You should see the photos. Quite like the gorgeous ones you chose. Life is unpredictable; how we weather the storm is what makes us who we are.
Sunny, foggy, rainy - it will be perfect.

i’m with hot cocoa, SF is gorgeous regardless. i hate driving in it, but i love the feel of fog (like when it blankets the part right outside our home). i think the photog’s talent can really be shown in these cases, fog can ‘make or break’ the shots! when captured properly, i think it’s extra lovely!

SF is gorgeous even with the fog! In my area it’s usually pretty predictibly warm in June, but there are always those years when we have some rain. I’m crossing my fingers that it doesn’t happen since my ceremony and reception are both outside!

those photos make me miss SF something awful. I’ve been in LA for 6 years now, a Nor Cal transport. There’s nothing like SF!
