Mrs. D'orsay's Picture
Mrs. D'orsay, Baltimore/Lancaster UK Age and Occupation: 24, Stay at home fiance (formerly in nonprofit communications) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Web site developer and designer; co-owner of men's skincare shop Engagement Date: August 10, 2008 Wedding Date: August, 2009 Venue: Oakland Manor About Me: I'm a Maryland raised environmental policy wonk/activist/organizer and communications aficionado. In the past year I've lived in Baltimore, MD, Tucson, AZ, Miami, FL and Lancaster, England. In my not so spare time I enjoy planning trips with Mr. D' Orsay, visiting friends and family and crafting like a mo-fo. I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!

First Things First…

February 5th, 2009 @ 11:42 am by Mrs. D'orsay

If I were to blog in perfect chronological order, this post would have gone first. That’s because we decided on our photographer before we made any other wedding related decisions. After the initial engagement excitement, I realized that from that point on we had about 3 months to plan a wedding from the United States, and that the rest of the planning would have to be done from England. I *may* have had a minor freak out. The kind in which I swore that we would plan the entire wedding before we left for England, and that I would have contracts for all our vendors and every single detail picked out.

As you’ve seen, that didn’t exactly happen. My first stop was the WPJA. I searched by state and paid close attention to the costs listed to see if we were in the same ballpark. Then I used my stalker skills and stalked several photogs’ websites and blogs.

I was going about my day, searching through blog after blog and flash-heavy sites crashing my browser, until I found it! Drool worthy, and in our budget aaaaagagagagah! A huge wave of bridal indecisiveness washed off my shoulders! I had figured out our first vendor, huzzah!

I’d like to introduce our photographer Evan Bishop of Bishop Photography to the hive. He used to live in the Baltimore area, but has since moved to San Diego and continues to work on both coasts. Here are few fabulous shots:

There are so many more I’d love to share with you, so I encourage you to head to his site to check out his work. Whenever I feel the wedding stress creeping up and I’m getting overwhelmed, I check out these two slideshows. One is sunny and yellow and the other is classic and timeless. They’re both sweet, completely from the heart, and usually make me tear up so much that I forget the word ’stress’ even exists. Although choosing other vendors hasn’t been as easy, Mr. D and I are both excited to have Evan as our first draft pick.

What was the first wedding related decision you made?

I can’t imagine how hard it would be to plan from so far away, but it sounds like you are doing a great job. These pics are beautiful! WPJA is such a great resource.

Excellent! We booked our photog first, but then we bailed because we found one much better and we’re saving $700, even after we lost $750 in deposit $$$.

I think our photographer was the first vendor we booked too! It was the most important to me, so I started researching photogs right off the bat!

The venue was the first thing we picked…although I had looked online at dresses before that. But we needed the date so that we could book everything else! I sort of wish I’d looked at photographers earlier than I did, like you - it really is the most important thing!

We also decided on a photographer before anything else wedding related! Before we even had a date set for the wedding. We met him at a friend’s birthday party, after finding out he was a photographer I asked for his card. We checked out his blog the next day and fell in love with his style and talent. We booked his company right away and everything else fell into place after that.
@BeachBrideT: I agree, the photographer is most important to me too.

What beautiful photos! I bet you’re super excited. Our photographer came wayyyy before everything else. She’s a.maz.ing, and hard to get, so we booked her asap. :)

The location in Jamaica! We needed that before anything else could get done. Then it was our invitation designer!

Beautiful photos! Our first decision was to HAVE a destination wedding. Then the location.. then about ten other things before I got to the photographer. Awesome that you snagged yours right away.

My brother got married in Baltimore last August (his wife is from just outside the city) and their photographer was none other than Evan Bishop!

Photography is so important to me that I didn’t book our venue until I was sure the two photographers I loved were free on the dates the venue was available - so yes, I booked our venue around the photographer! (Although as it happened, the venue was unavailable most of the Saturdays we wanted, and our photographer’s schedule was wide open!)
