Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!
About Mrs. Kitten

Dadzilla, Mon!

February 5th, 2009 @ 3:09 pm by Mrs. Kitten

k1
Yes, That’s my dad, clipboard in hand, surveying his kingdom (otherwise know as our wedding venue).

I just got off the phone with my dad. He just added another person to our guest list, our intimate seaside wedding. It was another one of his golfing buddies that I have never met. This was after I told him over Christmas, “the invitations are ordered, the guest list is closed.”

My name is Miss Kitten and I have a Dadzilla.

Allow me to back up for just a moment.

I actually have two dads. My mom and Dadzilla divorced when I was young. When I was seven, my mom married my step dad. I am close to both my dad and step dad, and they are both equally “dads” to me. I have definitely pondered the “who is walking me down the aisle” question, and I will post later about the various options available to those my situation. But to lessen the confusion, I will from now on refer to them as dad (step dad) and Dadzilla (”real” dad).

I love Dadzilla and want him to be involved in the wedding. But he’s a little TOO involved at the moment. It all started when my brother and I decided to take Dadzilla to Grand Cayman for his 50th birthday. Dadzilla LOVES the beach. He grew up in Jamaica, which is a close neighbor to the Cayman Islands, and he visits the Caribbean whenever he can. He was thrilled about the vacation, especially because it doubled as an information-gathering trip for the wedding.

k2
Cayman Trip–Brother Kitten, me, and Dadzilla

The trip started off well enough. But it soon became apparent that Dadzilla had appointed himself wedding planner by virtue of growing up in the Caribbean. Every time we met someone on the island, Dadzilla would tell them (in his Jamaican accent), that he grew up in Jamaica. It was clear that he thought vendors would take him seriously and treat him like a “local” if they were privy to such information. Soon, he was best friends with every bellman, towel girl, and concierge at our hotel, greeting them by name (imagine in Jamaican accent), “[Devon], how’s it going brotha?” and bidding adieu with the never-too-cliche, “One love, mon.”

Dadzilla is convinced that he should be the one dealing with the local vendors. After all, they are practically “his people”. He wants to deal with the wedding venue, the hotels, the snorkel guides, the pirate ship (yes I said pirate ship, more on that later), the rental car companies, and the DJ (so as to be sure that an acceptable amount of Bob Marley is played, of course). So what exactly does that leave me, the bride, to do?

Luckily, email is not part of Dadzilla’s “rasta” lifestyle so he thinks he is going to settle everything when he arrives to Cayman, just days before the wedding. Little does he know that I have been in constant communication with all of the vendors over email since our trip in July, so everything will be settled before he arrives. I’m sure, in Dadzilla fashion, he will try to take over the plans when he arrives, but hopefully it will be too late!

Does anyone else have a Dadzilla on their hands?

That is so cute it is funny, not so much for you I bet. Now does he actually have a Jamacian accent or does he just have one again when he is there. My FFIL thinks that if we deal with Indian vendors that we are going to be able to get all these great deals because he will speak his native language to them. But that isn’t so helpful when I am there.

Yes! My Dad is crazy! My parents are divorced and my Dad thinks that the guest list is like rolling admission. He keeps sending me names of people he wants to invite. Most of which I havent ever met! He is driving me CRAZY. Thanks for this post…I needed to hear I am not the only one.

Lol . . . my dad wouldn’t know the first thing to do with planning a wedding - he didn’t think I needed to buy a wedding dress since could just “borrow” one from my cousins (still trying to decide if he was serious about that one).

Does Dadzilla really have a Jamaican accent or was he putting one on to be “authentic”?

Hehe, funny to have a Dadzilla…but have you tried to talk to him about his overbearing tendencies? You don’t want any unpleasant surprises close to the wedding as Dadzilla undoes completed plans (or what have you)!

Miss Kitten that pic of your dad with clipboard is so cute!

My dad is definitely bordering on Dadzilla. He keeps grilling me on the status of various to-dos. I enjoy that he’s getting into it, but it can definitely be a little much at times.

Hehe..your Dadzilla is cute. I sooo wish I could hear him talk in “his people’s” accent. I can really see a resemblance in between your brother, you and your dad. :)

My dad hasn’t gone total Dadzilla on me, but he has called me a good handfull of times telling me what I need to do and who I need to call. ::sigh::

Seeing as the complete opposite of Dadzilla would be my dad (aka disown me)… i think its really really cute that he’s so excited to share this day with people he feels are important - its kinda like his big day as much as it is yours, and i think its sweet of him! (hopefully he won’t get too out of hand though). Gotta love a dad that cares!

Is anyone else thinking of The Office episode when Michael comes back from Jamaica with like three beads in his hair and a steel drum set??

Anyway, after reading this, I heart your dad! He sounds adorable.

Oh my Dad has totally zilla’d out on me. My lovely hubby-to-be has been really patient with him which is so so sweet to watch but seriously, he has started telling his friends that his new calling is a wedding planner (He JUST retired). So good luck Miss Kitten, you have all of my sympathy!

Yes! My dad keeps coming up with all these nutty wedding-related ideas. Lucky for me, my dad is an “idea man” which means that he comes up with hundreds of ideas but never follows through on them. My phrase of choice has been, “OK Dad, if that’s what you want, you make it happen.” Luckily, he hasn’t cared enough to actually follow through on anything so far…knock on wood!! I will admit though, I have let him add as many people as he wants to the guest list. Our venue can fit a lot of people, so I have just made it clear to him that every time he adds another person, he is putting the wedding more and more over budget…which he will have to pay for.

I’m trying to picture a Jamaican accent coming from the pictures, it’s quite funny and cute! He must be thrilled that you guys are DWing it.

@phruphru: Yes! Thats exactly what I thought.

My friend had a “Dadzilla” and it was really hard for her. The $$ thing made it impossible for her to tell him no - and he took over everything.

Myself, I had a “Groomzilla”. A year after the wedding, he is still referred to as “Groomzilla” by many of our friends. :)

The first pic of Dadzilla with his little clipboard is so hilariously adorable!! My dad is completely uninvolved. If he started getting opinionated about wedding stuff, I’d wonder if he had a fever or something. Best of luck with your Dadzilla! :)

That is hilarious! Great post, Kitty. Although not quite dadzilla, Mr Breezy’s parents went to our resort a week ahead of us to make sure all would be kosher. At first I was worried but actually, it helped a lot. I love them for it.

I have a dadzilla in terms of the guest list…after I’d told him at least 3 times that the list is FINAL and finished (and the invites are ordered) he starts giving me more names! His exact words were, “I thought that was just a preliminary list we could revisit later.” Aghhhh!

I have a similar situation with my future in-laws. I want a small wedding. I’m just really uncomfortable with huge crowds of attention on me and only want to share this moment with those closest to the 2 of us. However, the in-laws-to-be are social butterflys. Many of their friends (whom I may have met only once) have implied they are looking forward to our wedding in Hawaii. EK! I imagine the guest list doubling! I have to keep reminding myself (and everyone else) that it’s mine and my fiance’s wedding - not anyone else’s party! I’m like a broken record, politely saying over and over again “It’s just going to be a small wedding…”

wow! i didn’t have a dadzilla. although on the day day of the wedding right before the reception started, we were waiting for people to arrive (Chinese wedding tradition - parents and bride/groom greet guests) and he was the most involved that I’d ever seen him (i.e. making sure the tables looked right, asking me all these questions, running around, etc.)
