Honeymoon Flights Booked!

February 5th, 2009 @ 1:05 pm by Mrs. Perfume

We went to Beijing for Thanksgiving for a few weeks. Why Beijing? Because we had a swank free place to stay with some expat friends, but primarily for the purpose of COLLECTING AIR MILES. Mr. P travels quite a bit for work, so he has tons. I have a United Mileage credit card, on which I try to put EVERYTHING. So… we’ve collected enough to go to Italy and back in FIRST CLASS, dahlings! Mr. P (surprised me and) booked the tix this morning! (He’s planning the honeymoon—doing his traditional duty, apparently.)

We were open to the idea of Europe or Asia, the constraint being those two continents because that’s where we could fly first class on free miles. Originally, I was thinking South Africa or New Zealand. But alas, no free first class there, and waaaay too much time on a plane. Come to think of it, so is Asia.

So, Northern ITALY it is!!! Now, where to go, where to go?? (I’ll definitely be studying Mr. Canary’s posts!) It’s going to be a full-on FOOD-WINE-ART fest (our three loves)!!

I’m thinking Venice, Lake Como, Verona, Portofino!!! Thoughts???

Nice work! FIL works in Iraq and flies a TON, so he gave us some miles to upgrade to first class to Hawaii. So far we’ve only got the way there gauranteed first class, but nonetheless, I’m so psyched (and hopeful it’ll work out for the return as well)!

So excited for you. I highly recommend Venice and Verona. But my favorite place in this whole world is the Amalfi Coast!

Florence for the art definitely. The Uffizi is amazing and David is at the Accademia.

Although on the Italian Rivera, I think Cinque Terre is a must!

Ooo…1st class is sooooo worth it on a trans-atlantic flight. Enjoy the chocolate bar…as in…an entire bar of all chocolate delicacies set up just for the 8 of you in 1st class.

I would say, don’t do too much time in Venice…it is beautiful, but you don’t need more than a couple of days. There are so many more beautiful and romantic places to stay that aren’t as tourist hate-y as Venitians.

Ohhh I looooove Italy. Love. All the places you listed are AMAZING. I think you would like Florence, as well. If you can fit it in, do it!

We’re finalizing our honeymoon now - I am so excited!

Mr. Canary is going to be so happy that someone read his post! Don’t forget Padova (an art lover’s gem… there is a beautiful chapel with the most amazing Giotto frescoes). I never made it to Lake Como but absolutely loved Lake Garda. And Verona has one of the oldest coliseums still in use. Try to catch an opera there. They literally roll out a red carpet and men wear tuxes and women wear ballgowns. Or you can totally opt for cheap seats (on the upper tier) and enjoy the opera just the same!

My vote is for Florence, but you definitely must go to Venice while you’re over there.

you MUST stop in both Florence and Trieste. Florence is not quite “northern italy”, but it is very romantic.

If you want any recommendations feel free to email me at rhodeygirltests at gmail dot com. I lived in Florence for 8 months and grew up visiting Trieste often!

Also… Venice gets VERY crazy in the summer tourist months. Try and go during the weekdays and not the weekend days!

Italy is so gorgeous! I studied abroad in Florence during college - already 8 years ago! - but still feel homesick for my time there. If you love art, I MUST recommend Padova (or Padua in American-ese). The Giotto chapel is, hands down, one of the most amazing places I have ever seen - and I was an art history major! Cinque Terre on the riviera is gorgeous - five little “fishing towns” connected by a hiking path along the water. Incredible scenery, beaches, and food! You’ll have such a great time!

My FI and I are planning our honeymoon to Italy right now too! Our flights are booked, and we are trying to figure out hotels right now.

How many days are you staying?

We are actually going to Paris for three days first, because my FI really wants to see Paris. Italy is more of my dream honeymoon destination, but now that he’s convinced me, I’m really excited about Paris. And since we used miles too, we are able to fly into Paris, and out of Rome as our main flight. And then we’re taking other one-way flights in between our destinations.

We are planning on:
Paris, Venice, Rome and Sorrento/Positano/Capri.

We really wanted to go to Lago di Como because we heard so much about it, but I’ve heard it can be chilly up there in May. So we didn’t want to lug super warm clothes with us. And we didn’t have time to do it all.

Basically, my FI and I have had such a hard time narrowing it down because there are so many places we want to see. We’ve agreed that we need to find that balance– we don’t want to see just one or two places for five or six days each, but we want to spend more than 24 hours in a location. So instead, we’re doing three days each in:
Paris, Venice, Rome (4 nights), and the Almafi Coast. We haven’t figured out the details of where on the Almafi Coast. Maybe Sorrento, with day trips to Positano and Capri.

And we decided that this will give us a taste of everything, and we’ll have to go back again soon to see it all!!!! ;) ;) ;)

I know its not nothern Italy, but Cortona is amazing. I spent a month there studying wine and the local vineyards there and in surrounding towns are seriously amazing. And the town is full of amazing people. If you are going during May then you’ll be there during the festival that’s featured in Under the Tuscan Sun. And the mountains a great, easy hike.

Como, Como, Como! I went in ‘05 (but not on Honeymoon) It’s absolutely breathtaking-beautiful. Plus you’re only an hour from Milan dahling, all those Italian designer shops! ;-)

By the way, Villa Balbianello (in your picture) is where the “wedding” scenes in Star Wars Attack of the Clones was filmed, and also the recovery clinic at the end of Casino Royale.

Wherever you pick, I’m sure you’ll have a great adventure.

Ooooo! We’re doing Italy as well! Rome, Tuscany and another TBD area. But Northern should be amazing — it’s where my mom’s family’s from — Torino, to be specific.

Venice is a MUST. Especially for your honeymoon. I thought Verona was just OK. Of the 22 cities in Italy I’ve traveled to, I honestly liked Verona the least. All of Tuscany is amazing. Especially Siena.

You HAVE TO GO TO CAPRI! I know that’s more of mid/southern Italy…but it’s amazing. You could hit Rome on the way down, stay in Naples, and do a day trip to Capri. It’s ranked one of the most beautiful places in the world (and the most expensive, hence the day trip)…but it’s absolutely wonderful.

Beautiful! Well, you definitely must see Roma as everything in Italy is so close! (Relatively speaking.) Maybe pay Mr Clooney a visit too?

Ah, Italia. Ti Amo. I have no advice because I’ve realized I’m a one destination kind of traveler. I spent my entire vacation in Rome and I loved it. I got to talk to the people, explore the shops, see the ruins, really soak in the whole experience. But most people don’t like to travel like that, they like to see as much as possible.

I think the only thing I regret is not going out into the countryside. I would have loved to go out and find a way to practice my Italian skills on the locals.

Ok this is a late post, but we did northern italy for part of our honeymoon too. And you MUST go to Piedmonte. It is the best wine country, the food is immpecable, and the scenary is to die for. Not just that, but it is not touristy, so it just makes the whole experience outstanding. We rented a little mercedes sports car and went around to wineries, little towns with michelin starred restaurants and totally fell in love with the region. It is about an hour and a half drive from milan.
Then we went to the Riviera.
Look at hotels on SLH.com and secretplaces.com.
Happy honeymoon!
