Better Than Real

February 6th, 2009 @ 4:39 pm by Mrs. Canary

For the right bride, this would be the most amazing bouquet!

Giant crepe paper rose
(approx. 18″x12″)

I admit it. I DVR Martha Stewart because I love watching her make things and grill her guests. Even though I subscribe to MS Living, I still like seeing the action live and she often provides better tips on television than what’s printed in the magazine. And I have to say that I feel like I’ve got more of an insider’s perspective after attending the show with a few bees in September.

Yesterday, while watching one the recent episodes, Martha invited one of her staffers, Morgan Levine, to show off her crepe flower making skills. I’ll be honest, I’ve seen crepe flowers before and have never been very impressed, but WOW these were amazing.

I thought they were better than real. I loved bigger blooms, and how the colors glistened. The video and DIY templates can be found here.

And if you’re not too keen on doing this yourself because you’re a lazy crafter like me, check out Morgan’s site where she sells her finished products. She turns these beauties into bouquets, barrettes, and brooches.

Are any of you using crepe paper flowers in your wedding?

This is amazing! We’re trying not to buy real flowers so that we can save some moola. With that said, I’m going to try this one out once I figure out where to buy the actual crepe paper!

That’s so neat! At first I thought it was a “glamelia”…which is many different petals taken from a flower to make one ginormous flower!

Not using crepe papers but am making several tissue paper flower arrangements for the tables. We also included instructions and a few sheets of tissue paper in our STDs to let our guests in on the Mexican Fiesta theme.

I thought about using crepe paper flowers. I bought one of Martha’s kits. I couldn’t even finish one rose. My fingers were killing me by the end. So I exed out that idea, but they do look purty.

My FI and I actually are in the process of making our crape paper rose bouquets for our bridesmaids. We decided a while back to do the paper flowers for bouquets and to give the money we saved to The Connecticut Challenge. (That is a foundation that supports cancer research and survivors.) We have had A LOT of loved ones affected by cancer lately. Although, the bouquets are often a pain to make (I am developing callouses!) they really do look good. I will make a point of posting a picture on the board of them when they are done. We are using the white flowers and using manzanita branches to accent them.

Thanks so much for posting this!! I was literally just thinking about how I needed to find some sort of (fake) flower pins for the bridesmaids.

For those looking for crepe paper flats (the big sheets)–I recently purchased crepe paper from TexasArt.com. They do a lot of art supplies for teachers, etc. I bought 1 flat each of white and yellow for flowers and 1 flat green for leaves.
I’ve made 1 good sized bouqet of roses and peonies from Martha’s patterns and have hardly even depleted my crepe paper.

It’s a pretty good deal, as well–$1.03 per flat, plus $7.50 s&h, so I spent a whopping $10.57. ^_^ If you have the patience to work with floral tape and to cut out petals, I highly recommend this route. I’m loving my bouquet!
