Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!

Overwhelmed? Feeling like you are doing all the wedding-planning work? If you’re anything like me, you feel the need to do every wedding-related task yourself. No, you’re not a masochist, but you just know that only you can do it best (control freak alert!).

Of course, there are grooms out there who are very involved in the wedding planning process. I’ve seen a few DIY projects where the groom made the invitations by hand or did the calligraphy on the envelopes himself! Sadly, Mr. Kitten does not have crafting or calligraphy skills, but that hasn’t stopped me from delegating other time-consuming tasks to him!

  1. Thank-you notes: Divide the thank-you note duties! If the gift-giver is one of his guests, have him write the thank you note. Chances are you’ll be receiving gifts from his friends and family members that you don’t know very well or have never met. It will be more meaningful for those people to receive a thank-you note from him, the person they actually know. And because he knows the gift-giver, it will be much easier for him to write a meaningful, personalized thank-you note.
  2. Compiling an address database: Have him call/email people requesting their mailing addresses! One warning: I assigned this task to Mr. Kitten over the summer. After he had compiled most of the addresses, I discovered, to my horror, that he had occasionally misspelled people’s names and street names. I had to go back and double-check every entry! If I could do it all over again, I would have explicitly expressed to him how important accuracy was in that situation (especially if you were paying someone to do calligraphy!).
  3. Simple crafting tasks: Mr. Kitten is a fan of using the embossing heating tool and the corner rounder (both are “tools” and therefore are fun to use).
  4. Contacting any RSVP delinquents: Especially those from his side!
  5. Handling the groomsmen and their attire: Of course, you may want to pick out his attire together, but once the decision is made, let him handle the details.
  6. Planning the honeymoon: Traditionally this is part of the groom’s duties, but I had to be persuaded to let this one go!

What tasks have you delegated to your husband-to-be?

Oh my gosh. When this page first loaded, all I saw was “Yes He Can” and the first picture of the heat tool. Am I the only one who had momentary thoughts that this was ….. another kind of tool? ha!!

“Mr. Kitten is a fan of using the embossing heating tool and the corner rounder (both are “tools” and therefore are fun to use)”

This made me laugh! I’m going to have to try making that argument with some of my craft tools.

Ha! My Groom loves our corner rounder! He’s actually been quite involved with the Save the Dates and invitations … I think because we did them on the computer, and ‘graphic design’ is cool.

My fiance likes the corner rounder and the paper cutter. We haven’t actively used our heat embosser yet but he made me go out and buy it! He has stamped an embossed random things in preparation! Whatever gets him involved is fine with me. Oh and my fiance can’t spell to save his life, I will have to watch him on that!!

The part about “tools” cracks me up. He is doing our graphic design and website design, but with some guidance from me. I’m pretty lucky that he does want to help, but sometimes I drive him crazy with my indecisiveness.

At one point he did want to make the wedding cake though, with all seriousness. He used to work in a wedding cake bakery, but I still wasn’t too enthusiastic about the idea.

we have a similar division as you, including the craft delegation, and he also does our website..in addition to the above tools, men seem to be fascinated by crimping tools!

Champ has bruises on his hand from rounding the corners of our programs. He wasn’t very happy about it until he saw the final outcome and realized his pain was worth it! Way to delegate!

My FH is supposed to be reminding all of his groomsmen that they are to wear their uniforms to the wedding. I anticipate their being informed of this sometime around the week before the wedding, but by then we should be mostly sure of who will not be deployed. *shrug* At least I know he is planning a fabulous honeymoon and he managed to give me something of a guest list.

Mr. LL has honeymoon, his family/friends guest-list, reception music. He is also in charge of finding us a place to live in SoCal.

Good call on the RSVP track-downs! I think I will add that to the list.

Mr. MagPie reviews the budgets, handles transportation contacts, and reminds me of things I said I wanted to follow-up on specifically — very helpful!

Mr P is looking for a bilingual officiant in HI, and also owning the rehearsal dinner planning. :) He wants to do the calligraphy, but we’ll see!

Lol. It’s funny because these are the two tools that FI used as well. Because we did our own invitations, and of course I wanted rounded corners, he ended up rounding thousands and thousands of corners. Poor guy.

I’m also lucky to have a “tool” enthusiast as a finace/crafting assistant. I’ll join the crowd that laughed out loud at that! Good thing for us, the more fun he has with the simple stuff, the more willing and understanding he is with the harder stuff - like coaxing the printer to behave. Can’t wait to see the Kitten projects!

Mr. Latte is SO lucky that he’s too far away for me to give him crafting tasks. I told him to be prepared after the wedding..he’s going to be my #1 go to person for crafting manual labor.
