About Mrs. Bee

Hair!

February 7th, 2009 @ 5:24 pm by Mrs. Bee

I don’t really buy makeup products often, but I’m a total hair product junkie. I love to color, perm, cut, and  straighten my hair, so I try to take decent care of it.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s in my shower right now: Kerastase Nutritive Nutridefense conditioner, Neutrogena Triple Moisture Hair Mask, VO5 hot oil treatment, Freeman’s Peppermint and Plum foot scrub, pumice stone, My Melody mini bucket, Dermalogica: special cleansing gel, daily microexfoliant (purchased after Miss Lemonade’s review), and skin prep scrub, Alterna Moisturesilk Caviar Shampoo, Terax Crema Ultra Moisturizing Daily Conditioner, and Tom’s of Maine toothpaste.   (Isn’t this kinda like peeking in my medicine cabinet? ;) )

Hair! : wedding hair Showe 002

I alternate between Kerastase and Terax as my conditioners (Kerastase is definitely richer).  I’m loving the Alterna shampoo simply because the bottle is so cool — it opens at the top automatically when you squeeze it, so no need for pumps or caps.  And for the occasional hair treatment, I’ll use a VO5 hot oil treatment in the shower, or slather my hair with the Neutrogena hair mask, wrap it with saran wrap and a towel, and work or do chores around the apartment on the weekends.  Finally I use a detangler – Phyto’s Phytomist Instant Hydrating Conditioner (I also love the smell of MOP’s Organic Pear Detangler but it’s not as moisturizing).  I order everything off drugstore.com and beauty.com for the convenient shipping and ordering process, but unfortunately they don’t carry all the brands that I love.

In addition to the lines above, I’ve also tried: Aveda, Bumble & Bumble, Rene Furterer (works great but doesn’t smell so great), Ojon (the conditioner was too hard to get out of the bottle), Frederic Fekkai (another fave), Fresh (the best smelling but not the best moisturizing), Crede (another fave), Leonor GreyL… to name a few.  If you have any questions about any of these products, please feel free to ask!

I love to try new things, but the lines I keep coming back to are Kerastase, Terax, Crede and Phyto because they work the best for my long, normal, frequently harassed with color and highlights, hair.

What products do you use to keep your hair healthy?  Is there a new and exciting product that I absolutely must try?

PS - You know how they say you should only shampoo your hair three times a week?  Well I used to do that, and though I preferred shampooing, just using water and conditioner was fine.  But when you work out, how can you possibly shampoo only three times a week?

If I only washed my hair 3 times a week, it would be so nasty and greasy! It needs to be washed at minimum daily, sometimes more often!

I’m interested in knowing how other gym rats try to lessen the number of shampoos each week, as well!

Yea, I have never heard that but I think my hair would get too oily if I only washed 3 times a week but still conditioned every day.

I love Bumble and Bumble products. When I win the lottery, I’m going to live off of Kiehl’s. Any toothpaste other than that exact kind of Tom’s of Maine makes me gag.

i have curly hair, that left to its own devices is terribly dry and frizzy. it really has a life of its own. i only shampoo on sunday, tuesday, and thursday nights, but i condition every night and sometimes twice daily. even with the three shampoos, i definitely don’t have the oily problem. i would never even think of getting out of the shower without using conditioner–i wouldn’t be able to get the brush through my hair!

My salon-owning friend also said 3-times/week. She said that the reason hair feels oily if you don’t wash it daily is because your hair folicles are overstressed from the frequent washes.

I dunno, though.

I do try to limit my shampoos, but I do wonder what to do when you work out. Maybe dry shampoo?

If I shampooed my hair only three days a week, I’d walk around looking like a greasy rat for the other four days.

I use Aveda’s products, they work better than anything else for me. Their Dry Remedy conditioner is a godsend to anyone with a dandruff problem (as I have greasy hair, but dry scalp, go figure). I also go to the Aveda Institute in DC to have my hair cut and colored for cheap!

For working out dry shampoo is the best!

I love Terax and Kerastase. Right now I’m on a Terax kick again, but I’m sure I’ll be back on Kerastase soon.

Just take your hair down after the gym and let it air out, then you can add in some dry shampoo if you need it to cut down on grease!

I’m the same way…if I don’t shampoo daily, it’s a greasy mess! I’ve been trying to grow my hair out for my wedding day by skipping the shampooing portion everyday, but learned quickly that it doesn’t work for me! Ick! I love Kerastase products and am just recently addicted to Rene Furterer (I actually like the smell). I just recently tried to mix in a conditioner mask at least twice a week and I’ve definitely noticed a difference!

Biore’s anti-blackhead warming cream cleanser. It’s not just warm - it’s hot. And it works!

Also, once your hair and scalp adjust to you washing your hair less, it will stop feeling so greasy on the in-between days. It really is better for your hair–it will feel gross at first, but I promise it gets better!

I have TONS of super thick, coarse, dry hair. I recently discovered H’Suan Wen Hua Hair Treatment by Lush. It is fabulous! It left my hair noticeably soft and silky. Nothing has ever worked for my hair quite like this product. The smell is a bit funny, but it is ok because you use it before you shampoo.

I love Dermalogica products too! I loved Aveda for hair, but I thnk its because I’m a blond & their Blue Malva line is fantastic for keeping the brassiness out of my hair.

I wash my hair every-other day… On my “off” day, I sprinkle baby powder through my roots and comb it out… It does the trick, mind you I tend to wear my hair up on those days to keep my hair off my face.

I share the same problem with you Mrs. Bee. I used to do every other day shampooing too, but really, with how much I sweat during workouts, I would feel gross not to do it every single day. Thanks for the hair product suggestions too. I seem to go crazy with hair color and my hair isn’t my BFF for it!

Well, I think it is a European thing you guys might think it is dirty, when I lived in my country I shampooed my hair 2-3 times a week and it did not really get too oily and it was very healthy but when I moved here to states, I started to shampooing everyday and it really demaged my hair and it started to get oily in a day. I went back to my routine of 2-3 times a week. well it still gets oily but my hair is healthier. Europeans does not reall shampoo their hair too much and they dont care if it looks oily. For the work out days as Laurajane suggested baby powder and pont tail works the best. But sometimes baby powder can dry your hair out. depends on how sensitive you are.
