Combat Wounds

February 9th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Crab Cake

Early on in our planning, I fell in love with these centerpieces:

1

From Mrs. Lemon

But I needed to make them my own. I spent months researching glassware and candles. I was never satisfied. Vases were bloody expensive. And, I wasn’t particularly fond of clear glass. I wanted my version to be a little softer.

One evening, I was visiting with my mom and we had a brilliant idea. We, like, Miss D’orsay, were going to be recycling wine bottles for the centerpieces. However, we are using brown and green bottles (for a more vintage feel) and we’re also using beer bottles.

Remember the picture of my crinny with the beer bottles in the bathtub?

2

3

That was the beginning of this project. And, in true Crab Cake fashion, it has taken on a mind of its own. I currently have over 150 wine and beer bottles hiding out in boxes under my daughter’s bunk beds. Some have been cut, some haven’t.

Our method is a little different that the D’orsay’s. Instead of using the candle and ice method, I have a pendulum that taps the inside of the glass to split the bottle from the inside. It sounds more complicated than it is.

4

So, last weekend I was working on our bottles. I’m pretty confident about the method of cutting the beer bottles. They break easily (sometimes too easily) and really don’t give me much trouble at all. I pulled a case of wine bottles out and decided it was probably time to see if it was going to work with the wine bottles.

The bottle looked like this:

5

I scored a bottle about here:

6

Mistake numero uno! Because I scored the bottle so close to the neck, my pendulum didn’t have a lot of swinging space to get a good tap on the score line. I am inherently impatient, and when 10 minutes later, I still hadn’t gotten the top of this bottle off, I started getting mad. When I get mad, I do stupid things. I foolishly tried to force the top away from the bottle, and this is what I ended up with.

7

Yes, that is a large hunk of my finger on the end of that bottle top. Ew. That sucker bled for what seemed like eternity. Thankfully, I did this while my mom, the Physician’s Assistant, was around, and she said there was nothing to do for it, so I didn’t run off to the emergency room or anything like that. But it’s been the bane of my existence this week. It hits everything. Even the manicurist was smashing her fingers against my wound the other day. And, I’m constantly worried it’s going to get infected. I mean, hello, I work in a hospital. There are germs lurking everywhere! But, I’m also a bit OCD about washing my hands and stuff, so I think it’s pretty safe.

A week later:

8

Please ignore my wrinkly, hairy fingers. Ew.

This is what it looks like. It still hurts like hell sometimes, especially if I hit it on something. But I can tell it’s heeling. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be left with a decent scar on that poor finger.

Did anyone else sustain battle wounds while working on their DIY projects?

Holy Crab Cake Batman! That looks painful. Hopefully neosporin or some sort of vitamin E concoction can help with minimal scarring.

Ouch! My biggest pre-wedding wound was when I burnt my upperarm on the steam from a tea pot! 6 months later and the mark is still there!

I use to use them when I was into glass fusing. Please be careful when cutting glass , I have a non wedding related injury which severed a nerve in my hand! Make sure to invest in a good set of gloved.

Ouch! My grandma would tell you to use Neosporin, she carries that stuff everywhere in her purse and uses it for everything.

Oh, I am sure every DIYer has some battle scars. But it is all going to be worth it. It will look great.

Oh no!! Hope the finger heals. Is it crazy that I still want to see the finished product?

I got the same EXACT injury in HS from an xacto. Like same spot and everything. I went to the dr and they also told me that they couldn’t stitch it or anything since there was nothing to stitch together.

Its been several years & I still have the scar on my pointer knuckle, but the lines/folds in my knuckle grew back! I wasn’t sure what would happen since I completely cut them off. Its like new!

I loved Mrs. Lemon’s centerpieces. I can’t wait to see what you do! That looks like it really hurt tho…the dangers of having a beautiful wedding.

OUCH!

I know I’m going to sustain TONS of battle wounds. I’m rather accident prone. I n February alone, I have given myself 4 papercuts, bruised my hand, scraped my knee & busted my lip!! The papercuts are a workplace hazard, but the hand, knee & lip were just me being dumb!

I can already see myself with a black eye or something for the wedding, yikes!

OMG, How did you KNOW?? I’m wrapping large cans in pretty paper to use as holders for various things (pens for the message line, extra napkin/cutlery bundles) and while I was washing out a bunch of them this weekend, I made a giant vertical cut right now my knuckle!!! You do stupid things when you get angry? Well I do stupid things when I’m in a hurry. About two weeks after we got engaged I managed to take off a piece of my ring finger nail with the vegetable peeler. I’m just going to have to stop all crafting and cooking two weeks before the wedding for my own safety!

Oh no! I’m glad to hear you’re healing, but lacerations on joints (knuckles, etc.) are the worst to heal! boooooo

I actually wheeled away from my huge screen when I saw that. Oh no poor dear! Glad that it’s healing and I’m glad that it wasn’t the ring finger. Could you imagine slipping your ring off and on an injured finger?

I am sorry you were injured! I was going to buy the Ikea glasses like in the picture you posted. But… then I found http://www.dollartreedirect.com They have 7″ cylinder hurricanes for $1 each and you can buy them in bulk online and pick up from local Dollar Tree location to save shipping. They’re the real deal and cheaper than Ikea!
