About Miss Snapdragon

For some couples, choosing a first dance song is easy. They’ve always had “their song” and so their search for the appropriate song lasts about five minutes. For Mr. Dragon and I, this particular search was not so easy. Our favorite songs were either totally wedding-inappropriate OR they were TOO emotionally meaningful to us. I do not want to be crying all over the dance floor - I am kind of private about some things (shocking, I know). Over the course of several months, we went back and forth, trying to find something that felt right. Well, we finally found something that feels perfect! I am not going to share the song because… I have to keep some things a surprise!!

In the course of our search, however, we found several songs that might be fantastic at YOUR wedding! So, without further ado… great first dance songs not-for-Snapdragons. :)

So Small - Carrie Underwood

This is the song we didn’t choose because I would be sobbing the whole way through! There is “pretty cry” and “ugly cry.” This is my ugly cry song, so NO GO!

You Are the Best Thing - Ray LaMontagne

I loooooooooove me some Ray LaMontagne. Mr. Dragon and I both liked this song a lot, but… we don’t really have a personal connection to him or his music. I think he’s amazing, but when Mr. Dragon and I are together, we don’t listen to Ray any more than other artists that we enjoy. That being said, this song is awesome, and one of you needs to pick it!!

Witness to your Life - Lori McKenna

I have written before about how incredible I think Lori McKenna is, and I really love this song. Although we ALMOST selected this song, it didn’t quite make the cut for us. I love how natural and truthful this song feels. I adore this song.
*This is the ONLY embeddable video I could find of this song. It may take a few minutes to load - worth the wait!

Somebody Loved - The Weepies
This song is beautiful and simple and perfect for any couples that really want a quiet, special moment without extraneous fanfare. I am a Weepies fan, while Mr. Dragon is not (blasphemy!) - so no go on this one for us, either! This video is super goofy, so just close your eyes and listen!

So, Bees, what will your first dance be? Was your search difficult - like ours - or was it easy peasy?

I really like the idea of keeping the first dance song a surprise. :-)

What great almost choices! Our situation was similar, in that we like many songs and do not have just one that is “our song”. We chose “I’ve just seen a face” by the Beatles. It’s fast (swing) quick (2.5 minutes), and applicable to our meeting and engagement. Best of all, I doubt our guests will see it coming.

I was nervous about the pressure of picking our first dance song, so I asked Mr. D to do it. He did it with ease, and picked a perfect song… Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”

We haven’t found a song yet, there are songs that are meaningful but have choruses or words that are so not appropriate, what does one do in a situation like this?

I think we’re almost set on Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillet’s “Lucky.” I had worried about going with something so mainstream, but when listening to the lyrics and how their voices mesh, it seems just perfect!

I honestly don’t even know if we’re having a first dance (afternoon reception, not much dancing) but if we are, it will likely be “The Book Of Love” by Magnetic Fields.

I thought we had one picked out (some jazzy michael B) but then Bees keep coming up with other great options and I just do NOT KNOW (QUIT IT! — but don’t!!) :)

Our fist song is the country song “Kiss You Good Morning” by Jake Owen. It has been one of our favorite songs throughout our relationship and my fiance included it in his proposal so it was an easy choice for us!

Ours was hard to pick, but we settled on Quando, Quando, Quando by Michael Buble & Nelly Furtado.

@Miss Siletto: We used Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillet’s “Lucky” for our growing up slideshow for the “us” section. Everyone LOVED that song!

I love that Weepies song, and if my FI liked the Weepies (which like Mr. Dragon he does not) I would have loved to use that song as our first dance. It is just so sweet, but it is a little short which can be good if someone isn’t a good dancer.

We’re doing “In My Life” by The Beatles. We don’t have a song that is ours, really. If we did I’m pretty positive it wouldn’t be appropriate for a wedding first dance!

I actually just wrote a post on this too, we had kinda decided on a song and then after the Grammy’s on Sunday we’re back up in the air b/c we didn’t even think of Al Green’s Lets Stay Together before.

Thanks for the recommendations! We are still figuring out our first song. I’ll have to show some of these to Mr. Ducky.
