Our Family of Four

February 10th, 2009 @ 5:29 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

When Mr. D and I met I was living in AZ, and my fur-child Max was still living in Maryland. As far as Mr. D was concerned I didn’t really have any pets. So when Mr. D moved to Miami and I decided to get Max a sister, Mr. D was pretty wary about it. He never had a pet and wasn’t really sure how he felt about it. Since he worked from home and I worked long hours in Miami, he knew he’d be spending the majority of time with my new cat.

Though the first few days were a bit rough, Millie and Mr. D eventually got used to each other and all of us finally started sleeping through the night. Since they ended up spending so much time together, Mr. D became very attached to Millie and considered her “his” cat. When we returned to Maryland we suddenly had our entire family together under one roof. Max, Millie, Mr. D, and I were all together, and Max was not happy that I hadn’t come back alone.

It took several months for everyone to get used to each other. Max would attack Millie, so naturally Mr. D wasn’t a fan of him. Mr. D and I even got into fight about which cat was at fault - his or mine! We each wanted “our” cat in our bedroom at night, but our cats weren’t too keen on the idea of being in the room at the same time. Both cats were finally getting along when we left for England, but since they’ll have been split up for 6 months, we’re pretty sure we’ll be returning to kitty WWIII.

Did you and your SO combine your furry friends? How’d it go?

We didn’t have to combine, but my DH is slowly getting used to my cat. He says he dislikes cats but I see them two cuddling when they think noone is looking! :)

FI has two cats. I hate cats. We’re working on that.

i have a feeling that this will help, because i had the same problem after getting a second kitty. i consulted a expert, who told me to separate them by a door for half the day. after that he told me to switch the cats so they were on the opposite side of the door from when they started. i did this for a few weeks. it was rough, but in the end it was sooo worth it! now they can be together and not get territorial and they rarely ever fight. hope everything works out for your furry ones!

This post is cracking me up! West Coast Groom and his kitty Sweetpea are best buds, and they’ve lived together for the last 12 years. When we bought our place together, we decided to get a new kitten, who has over time become the dominator of the house. Since he has taken to “playing” with Pea in some rought ways, West Coast Groom often refers to him as my cat (even going so far as to including my maiden name when he needs to scold Ziggy with full-name). It’s all pretty funny to us. Isn’t that why you get cats? To have company that at least amuses you sometimes?

When I move into my fiancé’s house we will have 4 cats (!). I have one and he has 3. We are still not sure what to do! We are worried that his cats will try to attack mine. She’s very prissy and doesn’t seem to be the type to want to fight or anything.

We plan to keep her in a separate section of the house for a few weeks, switching for a few hours if we can. We’ll see what happens!

I’ve always had cats and dogs, but he’s allergic to cats, so we can’t have them. It’s very, very sad. :(

When I moved in with the Mr a few months ago, I left my cat with my dad. She’s quite persnickity and I knew she would not get along with the Mr’s cats. So we have two, Sophie & Willy G. We’re debating about getting a dog but are probably going to wait until after the wedding.

He had 3 cats and I had 1, and one of his cats REFUSES to have anything to do with mine. She hisses whenever she catches sight of him. And he doesn’t have the sense to just leave her alone. But I’m hoping it’s one of those situations where one day they’ll wake up and realize they’re perfect for one another and become the best of friends. Hoping, I said … hoping!

In other news, my first cat was an orange tabby like the guy in your photo. He singlehandedly converted me from disliking cats and was my one great feline love. 4 beloved cats later, I still miss him.

My groom-to-be loves cats and accepted my Trixie Cat as his own! He has like 1,000 pictures of her on his iPhone (far more pictures of her than me). We’re thinking about getting a second cat when we get a bigger place after we get married, though… I hope they get along better than Max and Millie!

We both have family dogs, so Jordan and George will likely stay with each of our families. I’m pretty set on getting 2-3 hot dogs once we’re settled. :)

My FI was actually scared of dogs - he didn’t like them one bit due to bad experiences as a child. Since I had a little dog and she was just over a year old, this was a big problem. Being the sweetheart that he is, he agreed to try it out when we moved in together. If he couldn’t handle it or she was too much to deal with, she would go live with my parents. However, since she is a little love bug, she slowly won him over until now she is definitely a Daddy’s girl! It was adorable watching the process take place. I still think he had his reservations but after a full year or so, he was hooked and she is now the main woman in the house. I am the girlfriend. So goes it. I love it! I’m glad Mr. D fell in pet-love!

I also have a cat named Max. My fiance was not used to animals when we started dating, and used to be scared of Max. The first time they met, my FI tried to pet him by holding his hand perfectly straight and patting Max gingerly on the head. Fortunately, they’ve learned to love each other and we’re planning to get another cat when we move to the UK after the wedding.

Awww, I’m such a cat person. But, Mr. MagPie prefers dogs. So, no pets for us yet!

Great post! Hopefully the kitties will be happy to see each other.

We recently got a puppy, and the only other animal we have is our 8-year-old Jack Russell. He’s always lived just with people, and kind of thinks of himself as human — he thinks he’s WAY TOO IMPORTANT to have to interact with other animals. Over the last few weeks, though, they’ve started playing together non-stop and are now BFFs! It’s been really crazy, because at first he wanted absolutely nothing to do with her. Hopefully Max & Millie will have the same happy ending. :)

When we met Mr. K didn’t have a pet and I had my kitten, Toby. Mr. K was a total cat hater. It took about a year, but Mr. K has been smitten with Toby ever since. Toby actually lives with Mr. K now, because he has pet-friendlier digs!

I used to work for an animal shelter, and cats are often returned because they just “don’t get along.” But here are a few guidelines for introducing cats without causing kitty WWII:

Bring the new cat in the house without the other(s) seeing it enter or where it goes.

Keep the new cat “quarantined” in a room in the house. The others can’t go it, that cat can’t go out.

Leave them to play under the door for a couple of weeks. They end up becoming so curious of the other’s presence (they can still hear and smell them!) that when you finally open the door, they are more curious than aggressive.

Usually the new cat is accepted without any fighting, because they all have a place to go back to and call their own (their own rooms).

Hope this helps you build your kitty families! This worked well for my two kitties, and now they don’t go anywhere without each other. :-)
