A Gathering of Vases and Flowers

February 11th, 2009 @ 12:59 pm by Mrs. Duckling

Lately I have been doing a lot of research on florists and flowers. I’d say, in all of wedding planning, florals are definitely one of my weaknesses. I have a hard time keeping plants alive. (I’ve had a bamboo plant since August and I am thrilled.)

I don’t really know specifics about flowers like names, seasons, color varieties, etc. Since I basically have no baseline knowledge, I’ve been looking for pictures online.

I’m really starting to lean toward the idea of clustering multiple vases and vessels that hold the flowers. I love the variety of textures and the sort of eclectic/rustic look you can achieve.

Obviously, the colors and types of flowers in these pictures are all over the place. I’ve been leaning towards raspberry flowers for the bridal bouquets that will pop against blue dresses. However, there are some cornflower blue colors that could go nicely. I’ll save types of flowers for another post, but until then, feel free to send me your suggestions. :)

I could see collecting all sorts of blue mason jars and/or china to put flowers in and having them clustered at the different tables with lots of candlelight.

Is your flower vision precise or is it all over the place? Do you have suggestions for narrowing down inspiration into one cohesive idea?

I had the same problem! My vison on EVERYTHING was so scattered! I had to just step back and take a look at what theme was shining through the most

Ooh I love the clustered look. Unfortunately I’m sure it’s way outside of my floral budget, hence the reason I’m opting for a single stem on each table :)

I’d definitely go with the bold burst of color using the raspberry flowers…so much more unexpected.

I absolutely love the birds nests with the clusters of flowers you have up there…depending on the feel of your wedding, those are fabulous.

I love this look! What are the round magenta/raspberry colored flowers in the third photo down? Those look so interesting.

I was going to do the aqua and raspberry color scheme but I never found the right color of blue for the Bm dresses, but I did fina a great wedding that had some great pics of the pink/blue theme if you are interested.

Just an FYI - blue Mason Jars are really hard to find! They are collectors items and are usually super expensive!

Our budget helped me zero in very quickly lol. We are using a large, in season bloom to get the most bang for our buck. The bonus- that flower happens to be the lovely peony! :) Tulips are my back up in case we are a bit too early for the peony season. We are also supplying the vases as a way to save. Love your inspiration pictures!

Miss Duckling!!

We are doing this exact thing for our April 2009 wedding!

We’ve scoured thrift stores, yard sales, antique stores, and relatives’ stashes of antique glassware and porcelain.

Every table will have slightly different arrangements, but most tables will have floating flowers and candles inside teacups or bowls, with some flowers in small vases or glasses around the bowls/teacups. That way, we don’t have to buy tons and tons of flowers for arrangements.

We came about this centerpiece idea by formulating a theme that was very us - steampunk, which is very Victorian, hence all the antiques. We’re very DIY, and cheap. haha! We’re getting flowers from the LA Flower Market downtown, which is much more affordable than hiring a florist. Making bouquets and plunking a few flowers here and there in centerpieces is super easy. Our families are helping us out big time on the day of. But maybe you have a venue that would assemble everything for you.

We will need to sell all these terrific antiques after our wedding. If you are interested in seeing pictures of the glassware/porcelain,etc just pm me or email me at la_dragon_rojo at yahoo dot com! I set up a flickr account for them. I also took pictures when I did a trial with flowers in the antiques, to see what they would look like.

I’m in LA, so it would be fairly easy to get the antiques to you too!

Good Luck!

I had to make several inspiration boards using adobe and/or microsoft publisher before I made any decisions. I just kept looking and sorted out pictures I liked.

After a few days of looking, I realized that all the pictures I picked had a pretty cohesive theme…so that’s what I went with!

I love the ball jars with white flowers and the house number used as a table number. I used that on one of my inspiration boards!

I love the red and blue arrangement! Love it!
My flower vision is definitely all over the place, I still haven’t decided what I want. All I know is the flowers will be red and purple, that’s it. Every time I come across a different idea I change my mind, lol!@Miss D’orsay: me too! it’s so hard to decide when there are so many beautiful possibilities!

Love it! How did you know that flowers were all up in my brain today??? I tore out instructions for wrapping cans and boxes in pretty paper from the latest Martha wedding mag I have, and I am collecting all kinds of oversized, or uniquely shapped cans to turn into flower vases. I’ve bought some weird canned food in the last few months just to get the darn can, I tell ya!
Although I adore hydrangeas and originally planned on using them almost exclusively, the big-bunches-of-carnations look has got me all confused now! I love big blooms, but I just don’t know if they should be mixed. More research, I say!

@Amanda71109: I would love to see pictures of the wedding you found! feel free to message them to me!
@tbrooke: I have no idea, but it looks like Jennifer knows. Thank goodness for someone who knows more about flowers than me!
@Miss Taffy: I love peonies!
@Amy: of course I would like the expensive hard to find ones! Thanks for the heads up.

Anyone know of somewhere to get blue mason jars?
