I’m Lashing Out!

February 11th, 2009 @ 10:52 am by Mrs. Powder Puff

I am not a big makeup person. On any given day you can find me in tinted moisturizer, mascara, and a little blush. And at the end of that given day, I’ve usually wiped it all off.

Naturally, I don’t want this to happen on our wedding day. So I’m considering some things I’ve never considered before. Namely… false lashes (gulp!). You see, mascara is usually the first thing to go. Whenever I smile, it smudges on my eyelids, which I then wipe off. And, oops! There goes my mascara! Being that we’re getting married in July, when it’s warm and humid, I’m afraid my eye makeup will disappear faster than usual. And false lashes don’t disappear, right?

Now, make no mistake, I’ve seen false lashes. I’ve seen how they can make your eyes look AMAZING.

And I’ve seen how they can make your eyes (and you, for that matter) look like you just got back from crazy town.

Obviously, I want to avoid the jaunt to crazy town and just want to take a trip to beautiful lashes-ville!

What do you think of fake lashes? If you’ve used them, what’s a good brand for a lash novice?

I’m a lash novice myself, but with naturally blonde hair, I’m definitely getting fakes the day of! Of course, I’m having a pro do it though. :)

I’ve never used them, but if you’re thinking about your wedding from a photographic standpoint, you want to make sure yours eyes pop! As long as, you know, it’s not a “wonky I’m a little bit crazy” pop ;) That’s where a fabulous makeup artist comes in. I’d leave it to the pros.

My bridesmaids and I all used fake lashes on the big day, but the pro did it for us (on the girls with less lashes, she used full strips of fake lashes and on the other girls with more of an abundance of natural lashes, she used individuals)…..looked amazing in pictures! Go for it!

MAC lashes (and their lash glue) are the best!

I love using fake lashes! I usually use Sephora brand, but I’ve been happiest when I get them done my pros!

MAC lashes are okay they’ve recently added some more natural looking ones, but their glue (called DUO) contains formaldehyde (eek!) and I’ve seen so many people have problems with it. I would recommend taking a look at Shu Uemura lashes and glue (Mrs Cherry Pie used them) - they have many very natural options in addition to some crazier ones and the glue dries quicker than duo and is stronger.

Yeah, I’m doing my makeup myself on the wedding day, so they need to be user friendly. Veeery user friendly. :)

I’m thinking about fake eyelashes too!

If you’re interested in mascara, try the DIOR SHOW waterproof mascara. It really volumizes and lengthens your lashes- more so than some other brands I’ve tried. Its expensive (around $25, I think) but WORTH IT! I wear it when I’m going out on the town- I love the way it works and it REALLY stays put. Sometimes it has a little too much staying power, as I wake up with it on the next morning!

I use Andrea Modlash. you can pick them up at any beauty store and is less than five dollars. I use #53 for a natural look. You can try use them to practice putting on fake lashes and then work your way up to the more expensive brands.

I’ve only used fake lashes twice - at my makeup trial and on the wedding day. My makeup artist was a MAC artist so that’s I used and they worked great. I paid for the makeup trial but got to redeem the amount paid in products so I got the lashes at the recommendation of my makeup artist to test them out (and I concur), see how I looked in them and how they felt. Come wedding day, I knew to open my eyes really quick to separate the glue from my lower lid.

I love, love, love wearing false lashes! I would also recommend using Shu Uemura lashes and glue. My biggest piece of advice is to practice…a lot. Pick up some cheapies from the drug store to get used to putting them on and wearing them. Also, if you’re doing your own makeup on the day you might want to enlist a friend to make sure they’re on just perfect.

Here’s my suggestion: Go to the Shu Uemura counter at Saks. Tell them that you’re doing them yourself on your wedding day & want to practice. Practice right there at the counter & have them help you, give tips, etc.

Yes, they are more expensive than most lashes, but trust me - they are WORTH IT!

& they have some of those crazy lashes as well. I secretly love them. I went to his launch at the Saks on Michigan, complete with a fashion show, champagne, etc. Yes, an eyelash fashion show. It was awesome.

I’ve never used fake lashes before, but for daily-wear mascara I have to recommend (HIGHLY recommend) the new L’oreal Double Extension Beauty Tube Mascara. It’s the one where you put on a white undercoat before your darker mascara coat. I’ve never been good about putting mascara on (or taking it off!), but this stuff is amazing.

Works wonders. For real!

I wore false lashes for my wedding day - I had my makeup person trim them a bit, because I thought they looked too theatrical. But - they made my eyes AND lashes look amazing! The only con was that I couldn’t get them out the next morning when we had to go to brunch, when of course they were all pointing crazy directions. It was actually quite painful but I managed to pull them out successfully. It was fun, but I’ll never do it again!

My wedding makeup artist used these amazing fake lashes from Hong Kong, I think? The brand is listed in my Makeup Trial post. I’m not sure if she buys them in the U.S. or has them shipped from HK. They were amazing and natural!

Since you are doing your own makeup, I would suggest going to Sephora and having them help you. Definitely get professional help though. I went to Sephora by myself, picked out lashes, and tried them on at home. I looked scary - kinda like the nice lady pictured above with the furry orange things! Good luck!!

I love, love, love fake lashes. I think they make a woman look so put together! I wear them quite often and I’ve tried a lot of different brands, and I agree the MAC ones are my faves. If you plan on doing them yourself day of, start now and put them on a couple times a week so you get used to it.

you can get lash extensions- they are pretty expensive but last for 3 weeks to a couple months if you treat them well

I’ve never tried false lashes, but have always washed to. That first inspiration photo is the best! I was looking for something just like that to show my makeup artist for my wedding to show her how I wanted my eyes to pop and that photo is perfect because my eyes are similar to that color.

my vote is for the laura mercier lashes. i used them on my wedding day and was able to wear them again at our reception 2 months later. i chose the corner lashes. i thought they looked remarkably natural. my bridesmaids and my new husband couldn’t even tell i was wearing them. they come with glue also. i recommend having something small and pointy to spread the glue on the lash strip (for any brand) so you get a smooth, even line.

i used lancome definicils waterproof mascara. i swear you need paint thinner to remove it. it sticks to your lashes and doesn’t flake.
other lash tips:
-always, always, always curl your lashes before you put the fakies on
-apply a super thin line of black eye liner on your lid before applying the lashes
-stay calm and breathe. if the first time you stick them on isn’t perfect, carefully remove them and try again.
hope that helped!

They will definately add some umpf to your wedding look! I always trim mine with a pair of cuticle scissors or else they are way too long. Oh, and I like to use the demi style lashes.

I love false lashes. I’ve even tried eyelash extensions but my eyelids are too oily to maintain them. Now i use revitalish and I’ve seen drastic improvements in the thickness and length. I’ll probably still use lashes on the day of to even out the length and stuff… I love eyelashes!

I wore fake lashes for my best friend’s wedding in January, and I am definitely wearing them for my own! I have very long, full lashes as it is, but the fakies really just make your eyes pop so much more. I bought a pair and the glue (Duo, which I had no problem with at all) at Walgreen’s, and they stayed on all day and all night, through tears and all. Make sure you practice, though! (Or have someone reliable do them for you, like me!)

I used false lashes on my wedding day and I LOVED them!!! They made my eyes look incredible (if I do say so myself!). They took me a moment to get used to, but after that I completely forgot they were on. I would highly recommend!

Hahaha love the crazy eyelash picture! I’ve only worn fake lashes once for a dance show and my friend put them on for me. Good luck, I’m sure you will be more successful then I would be at putting them on.

Does anyone no if they still stay on through tears?!?

I was a makeup artist and model and we never used expensive lashes, always the cheapies like Andrea and Duo. Now I’m not saying that the expensive ones aren’t great I’ve never tried them and it could be a world of difference but again I haven’t tried them. For the price of the lashes (brands like Andrea and Duo) and the fact that they can in fact be reused if they’re not covered in makeup (but use a fresh pair for your big day), my advice would be to try and put them on once a week for a month or two before your wedding so you get the hang of it. Not to mention your eyes will adjust to them if you have any irritation and this will also help you to find out if you have any allergies. You might want to even try it on someone else first. Sometimes it’s easier to see how to apply them from that perspective. Make sure they’re not too long (for the shape of your eye not the lashes themselves) and trim them to size if needed (never trim the lashes themselves buy whatever length you think would be most natural). Usually lashes already have an adhesive on them that won’t really last for a long period of time but it’s great to use to try out positioning and length. First step in apply lashes, it’s really good to “roll” them. It’s kind of hard to explain this process but I swear it will help immensely in keeping them from lifting at the ends and there’s nothing more uncomfortable than a lifted lash! When you take the lash out of the container it’ll have a natural curve, I mean the base where the lashes are stuck into. Gently take the ends in your fingers (one end for each hand) and without letting the sticky stuff touch itself gently curve or “roll” the lash back and forth. There will be a natural curve to the lash already go with the curve not against it (think of curling ribbon). Basically your just accentuating the curve thats already there. When you’re ready never ever apply the glue directly to your eye, use a toothpick and lightly spread it across the base of the fake lash. My advice is to use clear adhesive instead of color, you can use any brand adhesive as well it doesn’t have to be the same brand as the lashes (one may be more comfortable on your eyes than another). When you’re applying get as close to the base of your natural lashes that you can, when doing this it’s extremely helpful to use a tweezer. Sometimes fingers don’t offer the same control and if you have nails they just get in the way. Work fast to gently press the lash and ensure it sticks. I sometimes use the end of a pin or paperclip, tweezers or even a clean toothpick to do this. I’ve never curled my lashes before applying but I’ve never really curled my lashes in general, if a client ever needed it I always did it after to ensure that both your lashes and the fakies are curled in the same way but that’s probably personal preference. After that all you need to do is apply mascara but make sure you give the adhesive a minute or two to dry. Hope this makes sense!

Fake lashes for me too please! It makes for such a sexy look, I love them, but don’t want to look like I’m from crazy town either. I’m so happy to see all the comments recommending MAC because that’s where I’ll be getting my make up done for the wedding. Yay!

I don’t have a recommendation, but I’ll be interested in looking at what you go with. I think I might want fake lashes because my mascara never lasts!

Sorry, I’m no help with fake lashes, but I just wanted to plug my favorite makeup product, Blinc’s Kiss Me Mascara! It “tubes” your lashes, is super water-resistant, and does NOT come off until you want it to! It’s amazing.

I just had my make-up trial last weekend and I got a strip of lashes. I loved them! It took me about 30-40 minutes to get used to them but they looked great! The make-up artist stared with curling my lashes then applied water proof mascara. After that dried she applied the lashes with glue and then topped that with eyeliner. People were telling me that day how good my eyes looked. I highly recommend them!

That second pic gives me the creeps! I use false lashes from a company called “Darkness.” You can find them in almost all korean make-up stores.

I haven’t ever used them, but my best friend applies them for special occasions herself, and they always look gorgeous. She’s said it’s totally doable as a DIY thing with a little bit of practice.

Good luck! :)

False lashes def take some getting used to. Even if you use them at your trial I would recommend having your make-up artist let you keep them and have them show you how to put them on. They feel weird at first. If you get some practive time in, you won’t be blinking like a creepy baby doll on the big day.

I used fake lashes all the time in high school! I wore them for every choir concert, orchestra concert, and musical. They do make your eyes pop! I’d just recommend practice practice practice and don’t use too much glue. Also, put your eyeliner on underneath cuz once those things are on, it’s hard to do!

For my wedding I’m going with lash extensions…that way they’ll be there for the whole honeymoon as well
