Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!
About Mrs. Kitten

Today I signed up for a second gym membership. Yes, you heard me right, I am currently a member of TWO gyms. You’re probably thinking that I’m some kind of exercise manic—but that couldn’t be further from the truth! I HATE working out! But I’m trying really hard to tone up before I have to face my wedding guests not only in my body-hugging Lia dress, but in a swimsuit as well (eek!)!!

I already belong to a gym in Austin, but I split my time pretty evenly between Austin and San Antonio (where Mr. K lives). I wasn’t able to keep up my workout regimen in San Antonio without a gym to go to, so I joined Mr. K’s gym. The monthly fee is quite steep, and normally I wouldn’t splurge on something like a second gym membership, but I seem to be rationalizing every big purchase lately with the mantra, “But it’s for the wedding!”

Allow me to let you in on other large purchases I have rationalized with this handy little number:

  • New running shoes
  • Teeth whitening
  • Dance lessons
  • Sunless tanner
  • Fancy sunblock
  • Lots and lots of dresses (for showers and other wedding events!)
  • Lots of shoes to go with said dresses
  • A personal trainer at my Austin gym
  • An Aveda facial
  • Fancy conditioner
  • An absurd amount of crafting materials

I would add the costs up, but I think I might have a heart attack! I hope you’re getting the picture though. And don’t think for one second that Mr. K is any better! He is doing the same thing, including going to an overpriced salon to get his hair cut ($60 to trim a guy’s hair? Really?). For some reason the wedding makes us feel like we have a free pass to buy pretty much whatever we want! We are definitely instituting a strict budget after the wedding!

What over-the-top purchases have you made “for the wedding”? How do you attempt to rein it in?

I bought an ivory dress I’ll probably only ever wear for our rehearsal dinner. I wish I purchased something off ModCloth.com that I’d actually wear again.

I hear you! I am queen of using the “but it’s for the wedding” reasoning.

First it sucks that you don’t belong to a gym that has multiple locations. That is why I love my gym because they have locations everywhere.

I also get the do you really need that for the wedding. Of course I do- well maybe not but I am going to anyway.

So true! It’s easy to rationalize making large or expensive purchases for the wedding. :-)

Hope your multi-gym endeavor works out (ha! pun!) well.

Lol… I have the exact OPPOSITE problem… FI is policing our wedding budget very strictly!

So other semi-wedding related purchases (eg craft supplies, rehearsal dress - I can wear it again!) are NOT going on the balance sheet! :) Keeps me out of trouble :)

I haven’t been able to bring myself to pay for even one gym membership for the sake of the wedding, but something tells me that will soon change!

I can’t wait to invest in some bridal events/honeymoon dresses though!

I say this all the time. I drive Mr. Ducky crazy…especially when I use to to justify another craft or shoe purchase. What can I say? I love a good excuse to buy my favorite things!

I’m contemplating joining a 2nd gym too…they have a pool that would be perfect for me to use “for the wedding.” :(

As my wedding approached I used the same rationale. It was really hard to break myself of those spending habits after the wedding had passed. You just get used to spending more and more money. It’s hard to cut yourself off!

We avoid this exact murkiness by having a detailed budget in excel of wedding expenses, so everything that is justifiably a wedding expense is accountable to that budget, and the money comes out of our designated wedding fund. That way, when we each spend from our personal fun money on something wedding related, we don’t have to justify to ourselves, because it isn’t taking money away from the rest of the necessary wedding stuff. It also gives me the freedom to enjoy splurges because I’m not worried about what I’ll have to trim later to make up for it. I know I know, very pratical and entirely no fun to some:-)

Obviously you are not paying for the wedding yourself if you are a 25 year old law student and can afford such splurges. I can’t get over how spoiled the brides on this blog are!!

hahaha i love it… really a $60 hair cut? How much hair does he have? I’m with you on that one. At least we us ladies get our hair done for that much we have a lot more hair to style and cut! :)

I totally understand Miss Kitten. I’ve given up shopping for anything that isn’t wedding related!
