Breaking Them In…

February 12th, 2009 @ 1:46 pm by Mrs. Ballet Flat

I absolutely love my bridal shoes. Remember how I mentioned I wanted comfortable? Well, on this large frame, it’s hard to consider anything with a heel comfortable now. I realized in my dress fitting that these shoes were going to cause trouble if I didn’t break them in.

See, I’m used to wearing flats (thus my bee name), but heels make me feel sexy, (Ha ha! Seriously, there’s something about a good pair of heels.) So, the logical thing to do is to break these babies in!

I’ve been wearing them around the house in 30 minute intervals, and I’m not sure if I have that sexy walk down quite yet. However, I’m trying.

I also bought these bad boys at David’s Bridal (in white) to keep my toes from sliding. However, I’m sure I’m going to need to buy more insoles and some strap help, because those dig into my feet.

I’m sure I’m going to have to end up buying a pair of white platform sandals to dance in or something. I can’t go to my loyal ballet flats on our big day, because there’s a 2-inch difference in height between the shoes!

Did/do you have problems with your shoes before the wedding? Do you have any ’breaking in’ tips for me?

My mother swears by old-fashioned wooden shoe stretchers. I prefer to use tape, band-aids and other accessories (from my dancing days!) to preempt blisters and sore spots.

Dr. Scholl’s has an awesome line of women’s insoles! Especially for open toed shoes! Learned from my dancing days too!! ;)

my shoes seem a little big in the heel area. I’m planning to purchase the Dr scholls foot things to take up some of the extra space. It’s so hard for me to find shoes I like, because I have hugh feet!!

Foam sandals like those are great for tired feet. I love mine the most when they’re a bit broken in, so I’d wear them around the house for a week or two before your wedding. :)

Hm. I don’t know why my picture didn’t show up, but I’ll add that I used the foot petals for my friend’s wedding and they were great for the first two hours. After that, notsomuch.

Oooh, I was going to buy the foot petals for my shoes!! My feet slide forward in them…I hope they can last!

I never thought about breaking in my shoes, that’s a good idea! (And may save me from some blisters!)

My shoes are really comfortable (or so they seem, for the 30 minutes I wore them); I definitely plan to bring a pair of sandals as well.

To avoid the straps digging, you can get some special lotion (or maybe even use vaseline?) and rub it on your feet to stop the straps from rubbing and digging.

I still need to break my heels in (thanks for reminding me). I had the same issue though, had to find more comfortable shoe to change into later, that was close in height.

Just to note, I personally think Dr. Scholl’s products are way better than Foot Petal’s and slightly cheaper. I’ve tried both products and have found that working on my feet all day (wearing heels) and I would never be able to survive without Dr. Scholl’s foot cushions, gel inserts, etc.

I also think that one of the best things that you can do is to just wear your shoes around your house for a few hours, so that they are “broken-in” as best as possible. I would recommend having “Band-Aid blister cushions” on hand in case of emergency. They are easy to apply, comfortable, and not as noticeable as regular band-aids and other blister covers. You can buy them are your local drugstore or at drugstore.com. I love them.

Band-Aid brand makes a roll-on type stuff that helps prevent blisters. I use it all the time when I wear heels all day. It works like a charm for me!

In my time as a professional bridesmaid and part time beauty pageant coach I’ve found that scuffing the bottoms up help with slickness (I know it breaks your heart to scuff up shoes, but it’s worth it if there’s a risk of falling) and sometimes using a hair dryer helps mold the shoe to your foot. Weird, but effective!

I used foot petals at a friend’s wedding recently. They were comfy initially, but my heels were off after a couple hours. :)

I’m going to try and break them in before the big day too. I started yesterday actually :D. The ball-of-foot petals seem like something I might try too because my toes were sliding out a bit. I got me a wedge heel so it’s a bit more comfortable because I’m used to wearing flats too. Please keep us posted on how the “breaking in” works!

Wear them for a few hours with socks and let your feet get really warm. That usually works for me!

I found the most adorable flip flops from Bonnie Marcus on sale here: http://www.solestruck.com/bonnie-marcus-womens-shoes/. I want the beautiful bride pair for running around before the wedding and the honeymoon pair for afterward!
