Makeup Trial, Part I

February 12th, 2009 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Cheese

Let’s talk about sensitive skin - AND HOW IT TOTALLY SUCKS. At the slightest irritation, my eyelids get nasty and dry and scaly. Sexy, I know. If the reaction is really bad, the corners of my eyes suffer the same fate. And while the rest of humanity (okay, okay, women in first-world countries) love, love, love mineral makeup, I get clogged pores. Fabulous.

A makeup trial was in order.

I started with MAC, playing hooky (ssshhh) one afternoon to drop by for a consultation. While it looked beautiful, thankyouverymuch, I had itchy eyes and flaky lids within an hour, so I didn’t take any pics before I washed it off. Bummer.

Plan B: Aveda. I heart Aveda. Ready? Here are the pics (yes, I’m a dork). And no, you don’t get before pics. One: why would it matter what I looked like before? Two: I forgot.

1

With quickie DIY hair flower made by crafty FSIL. It was there. It compelled me.

2

Let’s pretend that I purposely closed my eyes so that you could see my eye makeup. Uh, huh. Right.

3

Oh, hello. I look simultaneously like a five year old and a dancer. Ahem. We’ll blame the flower barely hanging on to the side of my head.

4

Again with the flower. And with the tired eyes. Maybe I’m exhausted because the bird is attacking my head? (Honestly, I kinda like it.)

5

This is where I try to make normal faces to get an idea of how horrible I’ll look on our wedding day. First, the crinkly amused smile.

6

I make this face more often than anyone should, given how not effective it is at conveying… well, whatever I’m trying to convey. Disbelief, perhaps?

7

This must be serious disbelief.

8

Scrunchy face smooshy eyes multi-chin smile.

9

We’ll end with the best picture of the bunch, in my humble opinion: the one of the neat-o china cabinet that I scored off of Craigslist for a song (actually, cash, but not much of it). See how it matches my other buffet thing? Swoon. I heart furniture.

10

Right. Back to the point: while the Aveda makeup looked pretty good in person, I wasn’t thrilled with how it photographed, and it wore off pretty quickly. So, next week I’m headed back to MAC to try again, this time with different eye shadow colors. A little birdie told me that many women have a hard time with red pigments, so I’ll keep that in mind when we choose eye shadows. I think I’d like more dramatic eyes, but then I’ll have to go lighter on the cheeks and lips, and I kind of liked them this time around.

What do you think?

You are so funny. This is exactly what I do when I want to see how something will look. I take a thousand pictures of myself with various faces. Out of control. Anyway, I agree, I think a more dramatic eye might suit you better. It doesn’t look like you have much (if any) eyeliner so maybe that would do the trick. Not sure if it would irritate you, though. I use a really dark MAC eyeshadow and a MAC angled brush to do my eyeliner actually.

Side note, in these pictures you look like what I picture my flower girl will look like in 20-some years :)

I love all the facial expressions in the pictures above. I also like that flower in your hair…good job FSIL! I think the make-up looks really good, but not if it rubs off! Have you tried Laura Mercier? They are great for sensitive skin and I’ve really liked their make-up.

Do you have Sephora near you? I’m pretty sure they’ll do complimentary ‘makeovers’, especially during off hours, and they might be able to recommend a combination of products that works with your skin (as opposed to relying on a single brand).

Your makeup looks great and natural! You should keep the look, but I’m not sure what brands to recommend for your skin type.

Looks great! Natural but “special” at the same time if that makes sense. And I like your cat :)

I agree with you. The makeup looks good but doesn’t look awesome. I agree Sephora maybe a good place to try they carry tons of different brands…

I def agree too. The eye makeup just isn’t dramatic enough. It looks great but for your wedding I think it should be a bit more extreme.
Oh, and I have that dry eye thing too. It’s not as bad as yours (it takes a few wears for me to react) but I know what you mean. I hate it because when you try to moisturize they burn like crazy!
Good Luck!

Try Clinque if you are still looking for products. So many of theirs are hypoallergenic and made for sensitive skin!

Go for dramatic eyes!

Hahaha! You make me giggle. :) I agree that the cheeks and lips look really good. They read very well on camera! So if you do go darker with the eyes, I hope you leave them alone!

I love Aveda too.. But I have the problem that I am well how should I put it a sweat machine!!!

So I searched high and low and listened to everyones opinions. My makeup will be airbrushed!!!

Which is awesome I have already had my trail and even without her using the water resistent I still had to scrub the makeup off. Plus since the makeup is airbrushed its really more water than anything else.

See if there are any makeup artist in the area that does airbrushed makeup

LOVE your China Cabinet :) and not just because it reminds me of the super neat-o retro one I’m getting from my Gma.
My sister has the same problem with her eyelids, if the second try @ MAC doesn’t work PM me and I’ll ask her what eyeshadow she uses :)

too funny! I personally think more eyes (eyeliner/mascara) and a little less blush….
also although natural/mineral/whatever makes a lot of sense for normal wear, on your wedding day its ok to go for the stuff that is les natural but will stay on your face (assuming you aren’t too senstiive)! its only one day :)

I think you look beautiful! I love the hair accessory - it looks amazing with your shorter hair. I do agree with you and others that I’d love to see a bit more drama with your eyes. Cute pics!

The photo session was great! Mac has a minerals line that might be more gentle on your skin. There are also some other cosmetic lines that you might want to try… Benefits or Origins. Sephora also may be a good place to go to try out eye shadows. They might be good to your eyes. I think wedding day makeup has to be more dramatic so it photographs well…

Hee hee — you are adorable! I’m actually not into dramatic makeup; I like everything very natural, so I like this look. But if it didn’t last, then that’s a problem. Maybe try it again with a primer?

I tend to have very sensitive skin as well and seem to be allergic to actual specific colors, which is why I stay VERY FAR AWAY from Mac. They may have some brilliant colors, but their products wreak havoc on my sensitive skin. My favorite makeup counters are Laura Mercier and prescriptives. I would make an appointment with one of their makeup artists and bring photos of some looks you want. And tell them about your skin.

You are so cute. My favourite pic is your profile pic, with your nice, relaxed toothy smile! Toothless smiles always look like they’re holding back and well, you just don’t seem like that kind of gal:-) I think that if your doing an afternoon-into-evening wedding then you want make-up that doesn’t look too out of place for either time of day, right? More colour on the cheeks and lips and less on the eyes is a fresher, more daytime makeup look, whereas a smoky or strongly defined eye is more evening. If you llike the fresh cheeks, then maybe do a defined liner with false lashes, so your eyes pop, but with medium-light eyeshadow colours to keep your eyes bright.
