Gocco Defeat

February 13th, 2009 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Piglet

Work expands to fill the time allotted to it. So true. So me. Rather than work on our save the dates, I watched the Making of the Band Damaged Special one… two… maybe three times. Despite setting up our workspace a couple hours prior, I was too intimidated by the Gocco to start on anything. Anyhow, it just takes me a bit to get up and running with a project. :)

George slept through most of it.

Mr P and I read up on every tutorial we could find, and watched tons of You Tube Gocco videos. There are some talented crafters out there; several of which are buzzing around this hive! We decided to go with a photocopy of our design to burn our screen and failed with flying colors. The master screen had blotches of the design missing. I’m not sure what to attribute this failure to… perhaps because we were newbies? Who knows.

Next, we printed the design on my Canon Pixma ink jet printer. Success! One screen, two rounds later, the hibiscus images were stamped. Pretttttttty. As they were drying, we moved on to the next screen with the text and flourish. Again, we used the ink jet since it worked so well the last go around. Result? Failure!

We couldn’t get a clean burn. The text was blotchy, and any text to the far left and right sides cut off. Mr P brought his laser printer the next day. No difference. We wasted another screen.

Don’t do it, Mr P! If you look to the left of him, you can see the route we decided to take. This recap definitely scales down the level of effort we put forth into our first Gocco attempt… but actually, seriously, in all honestly… it wasn’t that bad. Aside from the fact that we’re not sure which medium is best to print our design, we’ve got the process down pat. We may be in denial. :) The Piglets would appreciate any words of wisdom from you Goccoers out there to help with our next attempt.

Gocco vs. Piglets

Winner: Gocco

Did you just print on top of the Gocco-ed design?

@MagPie518: We tried, but the print would flake off. I now have a pile of 3×8 card stock with stamped hibiscus flowers. :)

Scratches head with puzzled face.

Did you use the blue filter?

The Gocco screens burn as a result of the carbon in the print. I do know that some ink jet printers have carbon in the ink, but others do not. I usually use a laser printer to ensure an even carbon distribution. But it’s really puzzling that some of your burns worked and some of them didn’t.

However, it might not be your fault. Some bulbs just don’t work, which is really frustrating and usually involves swear words after only half a screen burns.

Regardless of the Gocco mishaps, your STDs are fabulous!

I’ve had a lot of issues with printing that is too close to the edge of the gocco screen. Which is super annoying since the screen really isn’t that large anyways! I don’t know if that is the problem you are having, since I don’t know where the bluring was located.

The other thing I always check is to make sure you’re using the blue filter, if you weren’t you could try with, or vis versa. I’ve done it both ways depending on the item I’m printing.

I hope that helps! Good luck and don’t let the Gocco win!!!

@Angie: Starting with the envelopes is a good idea in my mind. It’s all about the baby steps. :) We can hold hold each other along the way~!

@Mrs. Cookie: Yup, we used the blue filter for all attempts. In the end, it was the laser printer that produced the best quality burn. Hopefully, I’ll get our STDs in the mail today, so I can share the finished product with you! We tossed the one that cut off the text shown in the image. :( The swear words I am very familiar with!

I love the gocco, but I just don’t think I will be able to figure it out. Yours look great! I hope you can figure out what was happening!

@southpawAK: The text was burned at the outermost edges of the screen. I’m thinking that’s what it was, too, since we did use the blue filter. ARGHG@#*$*@#$*@. That’s how I felt. :) We will not be defeated by the gocco!

@AliCherri1: That was ME, too! It’s intimidating but once you get started, it’s not so bad. Promise. :)

@EAQ219: I’m with ya! I’ve loved it since the first season.

I’m really impressed that your smaller text turned out so well, even the cursive font! My invites need a smaller font than I used on my STDs, so I was worried, but yours look really good so it gives me some confidence.
About the edge not printing right, I’ve run into that too. One edge of my gocco seems more likely to do this than the others, but I try to give as much margin as I can all around.

I’ve been thinking about buying a Gocco, but I’m a little terrified of it! It just seems so complicated.

On the other hand, I really have no idea how we’re going to print our invites without one.

I’m in gocco limbo!

Well it looks like they ended up great! However, I would be nervous to use a gocco too!

Mr. P’s expression is awesome! Did you try the laser print w/o the blue screen? From what I understand, you only need the blue screen for photocopies. I’ve always just used my laser printer w/o the blue screen, and have never had any issues (except when I got too close to the edge or used a font that was too thin/light). Not that my gocco hasn’t given me grief: I did my thank you cards this week, and the inking was uneven and crazy. Arrgh.

Those turned out beautifully (in the end, anyway)!

As for how to burn, we don’t have a laser printer so always took our inkjet prints to Kinko’s for nice, dark photocopies. Photocopiers use lots of carbon. Because we never tried printer-alone I can’t compare, but even our ultra-detailed screens burned beautifully every time.

I am no help to your gocco problems, but I was wondering– where did you get that fabulous rug?

I did some super detailed GOCCO work not too long ago and the first attempt (with my inkjet) and then I had my friend make a photocopy on the crazy old photocopier where she works (i.e. not a digital printer) and they came out perfectly…even with all the crazy detail! You can see what I am talking about at the bottom of this post: http://limoncello-style.blogspot.com/2008/11/roslindale-open-studios.html

Sorry…that was supposed to say that the 1st attempt failed miserably. The second attempt (using the photocopier) was the success.

@Miss Hot Cocoa: We never tried burning a screen without the blue filter. It’s worth a try - we’ve got nothing to lose at this point. :)

@Turtle: It’s from my grandmama…So most likely from Korea? Sorry, I’m not all too sure!

@Mrs. Corn: Corn, that is nothing short of AMAZING! I’m in awe of the detailed lines!

I’ve only used xerox copies for mine, and that might solve your problem, there might not be enough carbon (or maybe it’s not loose enough?) on the laser printer pages.
