My Very Unconventional Valentine

February 14th, 2009 @ 2:42 pm by Mrs. Taffy

You’ve seen the vintage Valentine that I will give Mr. Taffy tomorrow. This post is about the very first (unusual) Valentine that I made for my groom to be.

During my Secret Lives of Bees post, I talked about my obsession with blood donation. I am an avid fan of the Red Cross! I also mentioned that Mr. Taffy won huge points on our first date when he brought the subject of blood types up during dinner. I decided to make Mr. Taffy a blood donation-themed Valentine… after all, it was happy hearts day!

Squeamish bees, proceed with caution. This may be a little on the graphic side!

I didn’t know Mr. Taffy’s blood type yet, so I put TBD, standing for to be determined. And boy was I determined! I even made a Punnett square using his mom and dad’s blood types! The following year, Mr. Taffy donated blood around Valentine’s Day so we could find out his type. (And because donating was a good thing to do, of course!) We found out that he is A positive, the opposite of my A negative. I decided that it would be fun to update the Valentine, now that the mystery has been solved…

That’s much better. ;)

What is the weirdest Valentine that you have sent or received?

Adorable. And I just want to thank you for being an avid blood donor. Blood donors saved my mom’s life when I was 20, and I can’t donate to give back, much as I would like to, so it means a lot to hear about people who not only can, but do. Thanks :)

Hey Miss Taffy, I think it’s great that you’re so avid about donating blood! It’s a really great thing. I recently gave blood for the first time and was really excited to find out my blood type (O+). In reading your post I noticed that you said you’re Rh - and your fiance is Rh +. You may already know this, but I just wanted to point out that this could cause problems if/when you decide to have children if it’s not monitored by your doctor. I’m pretty sure they do blood testing on both parents to check for this, but just wanted to give you a heads up :) Here’s a link about it if you’d like to read more… http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/rh-factor/AN00566

I was just going to point out what LeiAnn said. It’s usually only a problem with subsequent pregnancies… not the first one;)

Very sweet valentine!

it may only be a problem with subsequent pregnancies, but you’ll have to get the necessary shots during your first pregnancy to avoid the problems later!

We’re blood type twins! I am an A negative too! And I fully support blood donation and so does my B postive FH!

Actually the valentine I’m giving to My SO today is a picture of my heart.. literally. I do cardiac sonography, and there is a certain view of the mitral valve that actually makes a heart shape… Yes, I’m such a dork!

Thanks for reminding me about blood donation. I’ve always thought that I could never donate blood because I had malaria back in 2002, but I just looked it up on the Red Cross site and it turns out you only need to wait three years after completing treatment … cool!

I’m so with you on donation!! My mom just received her “4 Gallon” pin! Alas, I’ve been having a hard time donating since joining the Navy…tattoos, piercings, the locations we go to, and last year (when I was SURE I would donate!) they said I had to wait because I was anemic! ARG!!! So I’m saving up for when I get home because I’ll literally have an extra pint to give because of the altitude I’m at now!! Yay donation!!

@Miss Taffy: The wierdest Valentine I ever got was tickets to a horror movie. NOT my idea of a romantic evening!!

My dear friend gave her boyfriend a wall light that had her dental x-ray films on it. He loved it!

Blood donation is the easiest thing to do to make yourself feel soooo good about yourself! Everyone should do it! I hate needles but I just tell the people doing it DO NOT let me see it and they help me out. :)

ooh, i didn’t know they could tell you your blood type when you donate. my fiance doesn’t know his so he hasn’t donated before. do you just have to ask them? i’m a strong supporter of blood donation, super glad to hear there are others out there as well!

This unique! I don’t have anything to compare to your story, but I love how it is so specific to you as a couple.

@Miss Meatball: That’s very touching to hear, Miss Meatball! I am really happy to give as much as I can. :)

@LeiAnn: @doctorgirl: @squirt: Yes, I do know. I was thought that Mr. Taffy might be negative too, because his mom is negative, but it turned out that he is positive. Good thing they have those shots!

@PrettyKitty: Yay, A negative! Mrs. Cherry Pie is A negative too!

@Abbee: That is so awesome! Thanks for posting the link. :)

@Jess: That sounds awesome!

@lilikoi: They don’t tell you right away, you have to wait a few months to get your blood donation card in the mail. :) The wait for Mr. Taffy’s card seemed sooo long. We were so excited the day that it came. Your doctor can probably order a test that would tell you right away.

@MagPie518: That’s funny! With us it is funny, as I am generally more cheerful than Mr. Taffy. ;)

@ES123: @MightySapphire: @Maude: @Mrs. Cherry Pie: Yay for donating! I should probably make an appointment soon… ;)
