Aqua, Poppy, and…Rainbow Sherbet?

February 16th, 2009 @ 1:34 pm by Mrs. Kitten

Okay, okay, I realize there have been a lot of J. Crew posts lately. But who can blame Miss Peep Toe, Miss Lemonade, Miss Latte, Miss Meatball, and me for loving on J.Crew when you can order bridesmaids dresses and get them THE VERY NEXT DAY! Or even RETURN THEM if they aren’t what you wanted! Or possibly find them ON SALE! I love it! After the Melissa Sweet debacle, I started to look into other options, and I just loved the idea of NOT WAITING SEVERAL MONTHS FOR OUR FLIPPIN’ BRIDESMAID DRESSES!

So, to jcrew.com I went. Way back when we were going to have an aqua, chartreuse, and sapphire wedding, I fell in love with this J. Crew “Lydia” dress (in a lovely sapphire shade).

These dresses look great on the website. I love the halter and the flouncy skirt. But in person, the skirt was REALLY pouffy. Little Sister Kitten, one my four bridesmaids, is fabulously well-endowed in the rear department, making the back of the pouffy skirt look a little more like this:

Source

Even though she had a great attitude about it, and swore up and down that she would happily wear whatever I wanted (what a good bridesmaid!), I knew she wasn’t comfortable in it and so I decided to return the dresses. But I wasn’t done with J.Crew! Oh no! When their spring styles came out a few months ago, I saw this picture and fell in love:

I adore the idea of having different colored bridesmaid dresses. And because I’m only having four bridesmaids, I feel like different colors won’t be too overwhelming. The more I thought about it, the more enamored I was with the idea of each girl wearing a different colored dress. And J.Crew’s spring line of bridesmaids dresses come in a lovely array of rainbow sherbet colors. I was in love. But there was one thing that was holding me back:

Aqua and poppy! My beloved wedding colors (selected with the help of Weddingbee readers!). How could I fit rainbow sherbet bridesmaid dresses into the aqua and poppy color scheme?

Are you having color confusion? How important is it to you to have everything color coordinate perfectly in your wedding?

For me it wasn’t a matter of everything color coordinating, but with the BM dresses being so noticeable, it’s hard for them not to go along with your wedding colors. I really love the choices for dresses, though. So, are you thinking of changing your color scheme to incorporate those dresses?

Oh trust me, I have had color confusion! I have finally gone with black BM dresses in order to keep my theme of crimson, champagne and black. I love your aqua and poppy colors, but those dresses are darling!

Could you do aqua for the MOH and poppy for BMs? (Or something similar?)

First…I love buying from anywhere other than a bridal shop for bridesmaids dresses. There’s so many better options out there that create a much more pleasant experience.

Second…I was set on doing black, white and green for months before wanting to switch to orange and grey when I saw a fabulous spread in a bridal magazine. Mr. Stiletto and I were so close to changing our minds.

Go with what your heart tells you, but I personally LOVE the aqua and poppy. If you look long enough/heart enough and have some time on your hands, you’ll find the right dress to go with any color scheme you can dream up!

i ALSO loved the crew lydia dress and ordered it to take a closer look, and boy was i glad i did. just like you said, it is ridiculous in person, and not flattering. such a shame because it is so cute in their catalog. i ended up giving my bridesmaids a choice of all the silk tricotine dresses (all in navy though). and then of course ALL 8 of them picked the exact same dress (the short sophia dress). so now it will be totally matched, even though i wasnt aiming for that at all! oh well, if theyre happy, im happy :-)

Why not rework the color to aqua and raspberry sherbet?

I may be partial because those are my wedding colors, but I looooove the pink, yellow & orange dresses ;-)

I think you could maybe use the sherbet pinkish color with the aqua (which is sherbetish itself) as your main colors and then throw in the other sherbet colors??

I think an accent color of the yellow or orange would fit well into the aqua and poppy scheme!

A lot of their dresses do come in shades of aqua!

Maybe you could compromise and choose one of your rainbow sherbet colors to incorporate into the wedding theme, and have half wearing aqua and half wearing the second color.

Just checked out J.Crew’s site…Tea Rose & Tropical Aqua? I’d do it!

Then you could throw in the Sweet Cantaloupe and Light Chartreuse too and it wouldn’t look too weird…

I have color confusion, definitely. I always knew I wanted navy, and we chose sage as an accent color…but none of us know what sage means. It’s gone to lime to apple grean to light green….none of them match. Hopefully no one will notice.

I actually chose the first dress you posted, in the hot pink, yellow, green and blue for my bridemaids.
We threw color out the window and are incorporating all the colors and black and white into everything :)
It can work to have bright colors, you just have to want it.

Can you have 2 wear poppy and two wear aqua? OR you MOH wear one color and the other 3 wear the other?

I think the aqua, chartreuse, canteloupe and tea rose colors would be pretty together, and each girl could still wear a different color. If you want to play up the aqua as your dominant color, the 3 bridesmaids could wear aqua, and the maid-of-honor could pop in one of the sherbert colors.

Why not have the girls wear any dress they want (tea-length, of course!) in a spectrum of teal and spectrum of poppy? I’m sure some will go for jcrew, and others will probably find something just as cute (if not cuter!) that fits their style more!

Of all the weddings I have attended, I have no idea what the color scheme. I have no idea what the bridesmaids wore, (i guess that can be a good thing that their dresses aren’t memorable.

I would go for the dresses that are different from your colors. Who wants to blend in with a tablecloth. Let the decor stand on its own and the clothes stand on their own.

I loved the aqua and poppy, I’d ask two of them to go for each, or just the MOH in the other color. One resource I found really helpful was nordstroms.com since you can search by color. For example, there is a “Maggie London Sleeveles Silk Dress” that comes in both “spanish red” and “ocean spray” that seem pretty close to aqua and poppy. Though the options are even wider if you don’t have them in the same style.

For our wedding, the color scheme is more of a guideline than a rule… My bridesmaids are all in dark purple, but the colors aren’t even close to the same, the fabrics, cuts, and styles are all different too. And I LOVE it. It looks so much more like them than it would if I chose to have them all wear the same dress.

What fun dresses! My 3 girls plus flower girl will each be in a different colour (all with cream/white shawls & flowers so it doesn’t get too crazy!) and the boys ties - not gonna match either! I don’t have a colour “scheme” other than having lots of beautiful colour - and I love the freedom of it!

That said, if you already have a lot that is co-ordinated it might look off to have your girls in completely different colours from your scheme…

i totally think you can make it all work and i totally agree w/ ac-ny. they don’t all have to be matchy matchy. have ur sherbet BM dresses then bring the aqua/poppy color to life in your decoration and floral touches. !!!!

I really love your aqua and poppy theme…maybe J.Crew has some dresses that fit your color scheme? Don’t give up, keep looking! I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for!!

You are sooo my color twin. I have this dilemma ALL. THE. TIME.

All the colors are just so pretty, but I always come back to my aqua scheme.

in the words on Little Miss Sunshine- “do what you love and fuck the rest”

if you love them, get them. the dresses are obviously versatile and cute and i’m SURE you’re gnoig to have enough aqua and poppy in your reception that it will be clear what your colors are. don’t obsess and don’t over-analyze. no one will notice and you’ll get what you want and so will your girls.

i say go with them. don’t tir yourself down because of a color-scheme. it will drive you crazy for no reason.. trust me.

I love the sherbert colors! And I think they’ll go beautifully with your aqua and poppy theme…just have something that ties them all together. Maybe have one BM in an aqua colored dress, another in a poppy color, and the rest in sherbert colors. Or have their flower bouquets tie the colors in…maybe an aqua colored ribbon?

I love the sherbert colors! I also love the aqua and poppy! Looking forward to seeing how you resolve the dilemma. :)

Oh, JCrew, leave it to you to make us swoooon.

My bms are all wearing grey JCrew dresses. I think that you could do that too. It’s the perfect neutral in my opinion. Or mix it with the Aqua and the Rose and the Vintage blue like someone else suggested. Rather than worry about specific shades, work in a gradient of colors and it’ll go.

Couldn’t you do some variation of the aqua and poppy scheme with the jcrew dresses? Maybe have 2 in aqua and 2 in poppy? Or the MOH in one and the other 3 in the other? I agree the J.Crew dresses are adorable, but you could still get the dresses within your scheme….

But that’s just me. I considered aqua and poppy long and hard before finally deciding on yellow and grey.

I would like J.Crew bridesmaid dresses, if they came in plus sizes. But they don’t. :(

I have the same problem! My ceremony venue is very color specific with dominating tones of gold and red. I’m not a big fan of red, so that is nowhere to be seen otherwise, but otherwise am trying to incorporate shades of gold, sage green, and warm lavender, all of which can be found at the ceremony venue. But the BM dress I fell in love with? Deep deep sapphire blue! Then my mom and I went a little crazy overboard with that color and bought a lot of stuff in that shade. Now I’m not feelin’ so much of the blue and am trying to back pedal to the gold, green and lavender with pops of blue. Knock on wood it works!

I’ve had color trouble since the beginning! Once we selected a ceremony and reception site, everyone asked “what are your colors”. And we’d just say, we don’t have colors yet. The plan was no designated “colors” to theme the wedding around… but then came the BM dresses and like you, I thought I wanted them all to be different. As we started looking, that wasn’t going to work- more because of fabrics than anything else. So here I am, about 75 days away from the wedding and we are “aqua and emerald” (or sky blue and grass green, the colors of our outdoor site) and with 3 BMs, all with matching dresses :) So what wasn’t so “important” became important after all, I suppose..

And for what its worth, I agree with MissBookworm and Miss Rye Bread.

Miss Kitten I’m in the same boat as you. I’m also doing aqua and poppy but haven’t decided on bridesmaid dresses yet. I’m thinking they can pick their own colors but have them stick close to color range so while they may not be aqua or poppy dresses it might be a lighter shade of blue or a burnt orange/yellow. I’m looking forward to see what you pick.

J Crew is the best!!! You know that your bridesmaids can wear them again and they’re good quality. =)

I was originally keen on having a sherbert-coloured wedding, you could always use my original scheme:

http://www.ourlittlehaus.com/shortcake-wedding-blog/2008/1/6/warning-the-following-post-may-cause-cavities.html

It’s very sweet, and multi-coloured dresses would work well!

I really like the aquamarine color! I am using the aqua and red color scheme as well. I just got J Crew dresses in the tropical aqua (new color) to see them in person. It is nice but a bit too bright. But then I want BMs in different dresses and according to J Crew they only have the Sophia in aquamarine. Hmmm.
