The Making of a Color Scheme

February 17th, 2009 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Cheese

I fought against having a color scheme. Oh, boy, did I fight it. I’m not sure why, but to me, the choosing of a color palette for our wedding was like giving in to the pressure to make it an event rather than a celebration. We don’t really color coordinate Thanksgiving, right? But we do tend to stick to certain colors for Christmas and Fourth of July, and I’ll begrudgingly admit that it’s rather festive. So I gave in.

Ta da!

For months, I’ve been winging it when I’ve been asked about colors, most often saying, “Green like the grass, blue like the sky, yellow like sunlight, and any flowery colors.” While I love a nice, calm, restrained palette (like our original invites), in personality I’m more of an explosion of color. So is the mister.

I walked in our front door the other day and was struck by the realization that these colors live in our home. Look!

Do you see them all? So, while I bid a sad adieu to the hundreds of ideas I have, I’m comfortable that we’re well represented. Also, they look like a party, don’t they? Evidence:

I will try to steer us away from the tie-dye and more toward the field of flowers, but hey, we are putting a tent in the street, after all! Oh, have I not told you about that yet? Bad Cheese. More on that later.

Did you switch up your color scheme mid-way through planning? Why?

Yes! I got sick of brown, aubergine and ivory - we’re now rocking with grays, purples and ivories

Your wedding colors remind me of a beautiful hot air balloon! Any room for one of those in your backyard? ;-)

I am color scheme averse as well. I think it comes from feeling limited by it. So while we have 2 “main” colors, I’m not hesitating to break out of it!

Freedom!

Orginally I wanted navy, yellow and white, but we thought that was too nautical. Mr PK wanted NO pink…but our final color scheme is Navy, Grey and Fuschia. :) But I must say, lately I am loving Orange. Navy and Orange would have been awesome

Very pretty! Looks like you’re going to have some beautifully fun pops of color. Please let your “later” be “sooner” in regards to your tent in the street story….You’ve got me all kinds of curious ;)

Me too! I changed my colors midstream in planning, to a similar color palette as you! Our only difference is that we added a bright purple in there.

Yup. I was originally all about the soft pink with grass green and ivory, but low and behold, after I prodded West Coast Groom for weeks about how I wished he would have some opinions about the wedding planning details, his only statement was “I think we should wear red.” So even though I don’t think it matters that he coordinates with everything, we have changed to a “triple berry” palette of pinks, purples, ivory, and silvers/greys. No one tell West Coast Groom that his tie is actually “Raspberry” and not “Red” ok? Lol

@Golden139: I already wrote it! It’ll go into the queue after it publishes tomorrow, so look for it by the end of the week at the latest.

I was originally going for just yellow and white, but it became difficult to keep that palatte without it becoming BORING! So I added green to the mix, and BAM! Great new palettes emerged!!

Wow, your colors are very close to ours. Although we added orange and plum to the mix ad went with more of a fuschia pink. Very cute!

It looked so yummy, but I’m not having much luck locating it. Sorry I know that was a little off topic. Thanks for your help. :)

I’m finding that I’m doing this now. I started out with the classic Black and White. Then b&w with green accents. Now b&w with green and pink. Not sure when it will stop. :)
