On Marrying My Best Friend

February 17th, 2009 @ 1:34 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Before he was “Mr. Stiletto”, my personal photographer/paparazzi, or fellow parent to our two kitties, he was “BlueMixes” and I was “tnns82grl”. Yes, that’s right, match.com made the love connection for this romance. I “winked” at him, the emails flew back and forth, and a week later we were on our first date.

I’d like to state for the record, however, that there was no match right off the bat. Our first date consisted of a dinner at a cute little Italian place in the Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, followed by a couple of drinks at a nearby bar and watching the Illinois basketball game. I spent the dinner struggling to hear what this guy was saying from across the table in the noisy restaurant, smiling and nodding as needed. He, apparently, did the same.

As we watched the basketball game following dinner, we had a little wager over who would win the game. If Illinois was triumphant he won the bet, and he set the stakes of me owing him a kiss. I wondered how cheesy this guy really was, and if he honestly thought I would kiss him. Fortunately for me, Illinois lost and I didn’t have to make good on the wager.

But then he started doing sweet little things.

He put his jacket around my shoulders because it was chilly out. He held a great conversation. We finished up the evening and made plans to get together the next week for coffee so he could help me with my NCAA tournament bracket (I ended up losing… miserably).

Again, I, in no way shape or form had anticipated anything more than maybe a second or third date… but those dates became less stereotypical “dates” and snowballed into us spending all of our free hours together. I knew I had met my match, my best friend, my everything.

It’s now almost 3 years later. I can’t imagine my life without him. We take care of each other, support one another, and share absolutely everything.

I love him for everything he is, not only because…

On Marrying My Best Friend : wedding Steveca … he takes fierce self-portraits of himself…

On Marrying My Best Friend : wedding Sandwic … he captures me when I’m stuffing my face at lunch…

On Marrying My Best Friend : wedding Cereal … and first thing in the morning with my Kashi cereal…

On Marrying My Best Friend : wedding Mintcu … he is my personal photographer for all of my baking projects. He even encouraged me to start up my first blog, a baking blog…

On Marrying My Best Friend : wedding Arcdetr … and takes cheesy photos with me in front of monuments on vacation…

On Marrying My Best Friend : wedding Louvre … in front of every single monument!

Who would have guessed that a couple of innocent emails shared back and forth and a somewhat lackluster first date would turn into my fairytale ending.

Did your relationship start out innocently or was it love at first sight?

mine started while on an intership in Cinci, 2 weeks before we were both supposed to leave to go back to our respective states (FL for me, IA for him) Queue a million hours on the phone, computer, emails, texts, and airplane miles.
Isn’t love funny? Comes out when you least expect it.

aaaw! I love your story! My FI and I met virtually too, on Myspace of all places! He and I had a mutual friend whom he would leave ridiculously funny profile comments. I in turn thought these comments were hilarious and would leave comments about the comments. (I know–such a dork). Three years later, here I am, happily engaged.. I found the goof to my ball.

Rynn.

since we both met when we were 15/16, it was pretty innocent. i don’t think either of us would have imagined that a year later, he’d be asking me to be his girlfriend, and years later we are still together and happy at that.

Wow…this is almost exactly the story of how my fiance and I met - I’m floored! I mean I knew other people met on match, but almost 3 years (we met on June 15) and the winking and first dates snowballing into…well into us getting married in two short months!

yeah for match.com… we actually emailed/talked for 4 months before we decided to meet. Our innocent little email string will have lasted for exactly 3 years and 1 day when we say “I do”.

@LibraryBride…we met one day before you guys :)

This is one of my favorite posts that I’ve read on Weddingbee and I’ve been reading this site for going on three years! This is probably because my story of meeting my husband is so similar to yours - except we met on myspace (Ew - of all places!) instead. Marrying your best friend is the greatest thing in the whole wide world! I just celebrated my 1st wedding anniversary with my husband/best friend and I never forget how blessed I am to have found him.

So cute that there are so many others out there who met in a similar way…I tell you, I’m a bitt of a stickler when it comes to grammar/full sentences/capitalization, so the beauty of meeting online is checking out how he writes before you even meet him :)

My fiance is also my very own personal photographer, and I have so many pictures of me eating. My relationship started out innocently with a few messages back and forth on aim and facebook. After our first date, I think we both fell instantly for each other.

We kind of just knew I guess. :o) The St. Patricks Day Parade is huge in S. Boston and that’s where we met. I went to a party where I knew no one…He was the first person I talked to. A whole bunch of my newest “bffs”/complete strangers left that party and went to another where he followed close behind and told his friends that based on my butt he wanted to get to know me better….HE ACTUALLY TOLD MY FATHER THAT!!!!!! By the next party we were head over for one another. He invited me up the next weekend (when I got home from that weekened I told my parents I was going to marry him) and we’ve been together ever since!

As innocent as it gets. We were sort of friends in high school and shared some classes together. I hated him in history class because we would always argue (me being a stubborn liberal and he being a staunch conservative). And he sat across from me in orchestra; he played the cello and I played the violin. We kept in touch after high school and would occasionally talk on AIM. He deployed to Iraq during my senior year of college and I started emailing him on myspace to see how he was doing and to get another perspective on the war in Iraq. In the course of his 15 months there we went from sporadic contact to daily emails. We realized that we needed each other though neither one could say it. I was ready to burst by the time he came home last December. I jumped into his arms the moment I saw him turn the corner and the rest is history…

Another similar story here. We also met online, it will be 3 years ago in a couple months, right before the wedding. The first date was good enough for a second, but not amazing since it was just a quick lunch. Our second date was a mountain biking date and it was great (except I made a fool of myself by crashing multiple times, but apparently that didn’t count against me in his book). And, by the third date, when we finally went out to dinner, we found ourselves wanting to spend as much time as possible together.

Love your story. I too didn’t think our first date was that great, but at the same time, I kept going out with him. Now I am so glad I did!
