On Marrying My Best Friend

February 17th, 2009 @ 1:34 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

Before he was “Mr. Stiletto”, my personal photographer/paparazzi, or fellow parent to our two kitties, he was “BlueMixes” and I was “tnns82grl”. Yes, that’s right, match.com made the love connection for this romance. I “winked” at him, the emails flew back and forth, and a week later we were on our first date.

I’d like to state for the record, however, that there was no match right off the bat. Our first date consisted of a dinner at a cute little Italian place in the Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, followed by a couple of drinks at a nearby bar and watching the Illinois basketball game. I spent the dinner struggling to hear what this guy was saying from across the table in the noisy restaurant, smiling and nodding as needed. He, apparently, did the same.

As we watched the basketball game following dinner, we had a little wager over who would win the game. If Illinois was triumphant he won the bet, and he set the stakes of me owing him a kiss. I wondered how cheesy this guy really was, and if he honestly thought I would kiss him. Fortunately for me, Illinois lost and I didn’t have to make good on the wager.

But then he started doing sweet little things.

He put his jacket around my shoulders because it was chilly out. He held a great conversation. We finished up the evening and made plans to get together the next week for coffee so he could help me with my NCAA tournament bracket (I ended up losing… miserably).

Again, I, in no way shape or form had anticipated anything more than maybe a second or third date… but those dates became less stereotypical “dates” and snowballed into us spending all of our free hours together. I knew I had met my match, my best friend, my everything.

It’s now almost 3 years later. I can’t imagine my life without him. We take care of each other, support one another, and share absolutely everything.

I love him for everything he is, not only because…

… he takes fierce self-portraits of himself…

… he captures me when I’m stuffing my face at lunch…

… and first thing in the morning with my Kashi cereal…

… he is my personal photographer for all of my baking projects. He even encouraged me to start up my first blog, a baking blog…

… and takes cheesy photos with me in front of monuments on vacation…

… in front of every single monument!

Who would have guessed that a couple of innocent emails shared back and forth and a somewhat lackluster first date would turn into my fairytale ending.

Did your relationship start out innocently or was it love at first sight?

mine started while on an intership in Cinci, 2 weeks before we were both supposed to leave to go back to our respective states (FL for me, IA for him) Queue a million hours on the phone, computer, emails, texts, and airplane miles.
Isn’t love funny? Comes out when you least expect it.

aaaw! I love your story! My FI and I met virtually too, on Myspace of all places! He and I had a mutual friend whom he would leave ridiculously funny profile comments. I in turn thought these comments were hilarious and would leave comments about the comments. (I know–such a dork). Three years later, here I am, happily engaged.. I found the goof to my ball.

Rynn.

since we both met when we were 15/16, it was pretty innocent. i don’t think either of us would have imagined that a year later, he’d be asking me to be his girlfriend, and years later we are still together and happy at that.

Wow…this is almost exactly the story of how my fiance and I met - I’m floored! I mean I knew other people met on match, but almost 3 years (we met on June 15) and the winking and first dates snowballing into…well into us getting married in two short months!

yeah for match.com… we actually emailed/talked for 4 months before we decided to meet. Our innocent little email string will have lasted for exactly 3 years and 1 day when we say “I do”.

@LibraryBride…we met one day before you guys :)

This is one of my favorite posts that I’ve read on Weddingbee and I’ve been reading this site for going on three years! This is probably because my story of meeting my husband is so similar to yours - except we met on myspace (Ew - of all places!) instead. Marrying your best friend is the greatest thing in the whole wide world! I just celebrated my 1st wedding anniversary with my husband/best friend and I never forget how blessed I am to have found him.

So cute that there are so many others out there who met in a similar way…I tell you, I’m a bitt of a stickler when it comes to grammar/full sentences/capitalization, so the beauty of meeting online is checking out how he writes before you even meet him :)

My fiance is also my very own personal photographer, and I have so many pictures of me eating. My relationship started out innocently with a few messages back and forth on aim and facebook. After our first date, I think we both fell instantly for each other.

We kind of just knew I guess. :o) The St. Patricks Day Parade is huge in S. Boston and that’s where we met. I went to a party where I knew no one…He was the first person I talked to. A whole bunch of my newest “bffs”/complete strangers left that party and went to another where he followed close behind and told his friends that based on my butt he wanted to get to know me better….HE ACTUALLY TOLD MY FATHER THAT!!!!!! By the next party we were head over for one another. He invited me up the next weekend (when I got home from that weekened I told my parents I was going to marry him) and we’ve been together ever since!

As innocent as it gets. We were sort of friends in high school and shared some classes together. I hated him in history class because we would always argue (me being a stubborn liberal and he being a staunch conservative). And he sat across from me in orchestra; he played the cello and I played the violin. We kept in touch after high school and would occasionally talk on AIM. He deployed to Iraq during my senior year of college and I started emailing him on myspace to see how he was doing and to get another perspective on the war in Iraq. In the course of his 15 months there we went from sporadic contact to daily emails. We realized that we needed each other though neither one could say it. I was ready to burst by the time he came home last December. I jumped into his arms the moment I saw him turn the corner and the rest is history…

Another similar story here. We also met online, it will be 3 years ago in a couple months, right before the wedding. The first date was good enough for a second, but not amazing since it was just a quick lunch. Our second date was a mountain biking date and it was great (except I made a fool of myself by crashing multiple times, but apparently that didn’t count against me in his book). And, by the third date, when we finally went out to dinner, we found ourselves wanting to spend as much time as possible together.

My boyfriend started off as as a long-time friend of a friend. Then we were in the same group of friends that went out together. And after 4 years of that, we started talking, hanging out more….and now we’ve been dating for 6 months and already started talking about the wedding. ;-)

We met on match.com, too. I also didn’t think it’d go past 2 or 3 dates, but 3.5 years later, we’re planning our wedding!

What a sweet story! I love hearing stories like this. We actually went to university together but hardly knew each other. We reconnected on Facebook of all places and for me it was very innocent - he was just another person that I went to school with. We starting chatting every other day, that became every day and then hours everyday! Not talking to him everyday was all of a sudden weird and I missed him. Almost 2 years later, happy and engaged, we still chat everyday :)

I always wonder, do you guys get weird about telling others that you met each other virtually??

For us it was love at first sight. I knew instantly he was the one! I asked if he’d like to see a friend (in a nearby hotel) and he said yes. My plan was to corner him in the elevator and give him a big kiss. When the doors closed, he beat me to it!! Well it turns out I was lying about my friend at the hotel, so the elevator went up, and went back to the lobby. I was so twitterpated I didn’t know what to say. He just said “I’ll see you tomorrow…” and walked away. *SIGH* It was love at first kiss!

We met through match as well. No love at first sight, but we somehow kept talking to each other. FH believes that we should make match pay for our wedding since it is their fault we got together and all. ;)

Innocent as can be!!! My man and I started chatting online just because we went to college at the same university and shared several interests. We talked pretty regularly for about 2.5 years; one of us was always attached while the other was single. We talked about our relationships and helped each other with problems from time to time. Skip ahead to November 2007, we were both single and asked each other when we were ever going to go on that date we talked about so long ago… so we decided to finally do it. We’ve been together ever since and I don’t know what I’d do without him. =D

MATCH.com! I met someone on Match- on our second date he introduced me to his musician friend. Now the Musician and I are getting married! I always tell my friends that you may not meet THE one online- but they’ve always got friends! ;)

We started out innocently–I was friends with a group of guys and hung out with them all the time, though I wasn’t as close with Mr. Spin as some of the others (but I always thought he was cute, in an objective way, of course ^_^). But the beginning of our sophomore year was different–he seemed to have gotten cuter and even funnier and he later told me he had spent the whole summer thinking about me.

So at the beginning of our sophomore year we hung out a lot more and then one night he and his housemates were throwing a party. He got super wasted and kissed me in a hallway (liquid courage!). Yeeah. Less innocent. ^_^ We decided it was a one-off and it would never happen again for the sake of our friendship (and because his friend had a crush on me), then I kissed him the next night.

A week after that we decided to give it a go and date, which meant hanging out even more together and trying to pretend to all of our friends that we weren’t really dating when really they all knew. We totally thought we were sneaky and we SO were not.

5 years later and lots of road trips from Missouri to Lincoln to Omaha to Des Moines, and we couldn’t be happier.

What a great story! My mom always says, “it’s the little things that make all the difference.” And that wisdom comes from 30 years of marriage!

Great story! We met via match.com also. I have to say it was definitely ‘crush’ at first chat :) We connected via IM and ‘chatted’ at least 3 hours every night for 2 weeks! I was MAJOR CRUSHING!! Our first date was similar to yours - ‘ok’. We knew each other so well from chatting but had never met - there were lots of nerves and awkwardness. I knew before the date started that things would have to totally bomb for there not to be a second date - because I was SO into him. The dates got better :) And we were married 13 months later!

I claim now all he did was stare at the TV over my head on that first date and he claims it’s cause he couldn’t really hear me and I wouldn’t shut up :) (prob true!)

Every once in a while if I’m traveling (or I’m still at work) we’ll chat via IM and I LOVE IT :) It brings back memories of those early times in our relationship :)
