Mrs. Perfume's Picture
Mrs. Perfume, DC Age and Occupation: 36, Consultant (and Part-Time Professor) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Consultant Engagement Date: May 13, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Venue: The Homestead, Hot Springs, Virginia About Me: I'd like to think that I'm a modern day Little Edie Beale. Only not as..."talented". More realistically, I'm a foodie who can't bake; a dancer and dilettente; an art collector with a penchant for the whimsical and subversive. I live in the city and adore the country, but not much in between. I like smart design, great craftmanship and good value. Most of all, I love the new vintage aesthetic: classic, sweet, delicate, bespoke. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for a culinary arts degree rather than a PhD; but wouldn't trade Mr. P for the world.

Paparazzi For Our Wedding

February 17th, 2009 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Perfume

That’s right, one half of the husband and wife pair that will shoot our wedding is a paparazzo (he took the images above)! How ironic… because when we all met in person for the first time the other day I said, “I don’t like flash.” (I meant using the flash in photographs, but I guess generally speaking, as well!)

A “flashless” picture I took. Tim (on the far right) had to rush home and pack for a “job” (to hunt down a good shot of Chris Brown) in Virginia Beach the next day.

Just as our meeting was a way for our photographers, Tim and Jamie Jackson, to get a sense of what we want, it was also a way for us to get to know them. And Tim being a celebrity photographer was one of the interesting details we gleaned. It was a really instructive and informative conversation, I must say. We of course discussed ancillary wedding day details, including the fact that we want portraits and family shots ahead of the ceremony. And the ever popular “photo booth”. (It’s a good thing they come as a pair.) They had great advice on the timing of things (like doing the photo booth during the lull between dinner and the dancing). They had tons of little techniques that they told us about. On the matter of flash: they don’t use them. They use a light stick. On the matter of angles (I’m short!), they like to shoot from the bottom up. It was fun hearing about these little tricks of the trade and envisioning how they would work for our wedding day.

I really liked getting to know this great couple. They recently moved back to the DC area after stints in Las Vegas and Savannah, where, along with wedding photography, they also did commercial work.

There’s a stark clarity and stillness to this image that says, “This ain’t a Sears portrait”

We found them to be really interesting. Quiet, but engaging. Observant but not too restrained. And they have a fresh, youthful, and “current” way of looking, seeing, and capturing their subjects. They talked about their own recent wedding and how it gives them an even better understanding of what a bride wants. (That’s certainly helpful!) Tim wants to do more artistic work and Jamie wants to teach. They have traveled extensively, as well. (I think that’s important—it gives perspective.) They both studied photography and videography in college. They met in a camera store, where Jamie worked, and Tim visited… often, apparently. Those are just side notes, but they’re interesting. It’s nice to know them as people and artists with a personal story, rather than just vendors there to do a job.

Anyway, they have a great sense of style, and as we told them what we wanted in terms of a natural, intimate,

vintage, Polaroid,

p3

time-worn look, they talked to us about angles and post processing. And after seeing these non-weddingy photographs (in addition to their wedding photography work), it only reaffirms our confidence in them.

A snapshot of the photographers themselves:

Except for “flashless”, all photos by Tim and Jamie.

How well do you know your photographer? Does he have interesting tricks of the trade? How did you communicate your ideas?

Love their style! Some of the shots remind me of our photog, so of course I love yours as well!

I’m sure they have interesting paparazzi stories…I can’t even imagine! :)

That’s the first time I’ve heard of a paparazzo shooting a wedding — but I’m sure he’s great at not missing a key shot, which is awesome for you! :-)

is flashless shooting a common technique amongst professional photogs? your photos are going to be gorgeous! although, you could probably wear a paper bag, have me shoot your wedding, and still come out gorgeous in the photos.

What a cool idea for a photog! I love that “bulb” idea! I hate flash too, I always blink and come out looking like I’m on pain killers…

@MrsSl82be: That’s a good idea. I sent them links of images that I liked and tried to articulate the elements that spoke to me.

@MightySapphire: Hahahahahaha…on pain killers! My face usually looks as wide as the moon and greasy with the flash!

@MagPie518: @Miss Quiche: @Miss Duckling: I’m not sure if being a papparazzo is a good thing for the wedding, but at least I know they can do other things!

Wow, would have never thought of using a paparazzo for a wedding, but can’t wait to see how your photos turns out. I’m sorry if I missed it, but how did you find them?

Sounds like you folks are in wonderful hands!

The magic that happens in wedding photography is born out of interactions like those that you describe.

When the photographer(s) & the bride & groom are absolutely comfortable and confident with each other then you can let your hair down and not be self conscious around your photographer. And in turn your photographer can totally let loose creatively.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and here’s to Absolutely Magical Pictures!

This is so neat that your duo does more than just weddings. It makes for an amazing combination and I can’t wait to see the pictures from your wedding! I think its so important to connect personally with your vendors… I always feel like getting to know people personally assures you top notch service… they really want to please you! And on the flip side, you’re more likely to forgive them for mistakes and remember your day as perfect, because you were surrounded by people you generally loved (guests and vendors alike).

i’m “no flash” too with photography, and i’m glad our photog shoots that way.

my photographer covers rather grim topics like children in Vietnam affected by Agent Orange, cruel orphanages… so erm yeah…. but i really love the way he captures poignant moments, profound emotions captured in time.

by the way, ms perfume, i saw this pair of Jimmy Choos and thought of you - http://www.thebridescafe.com/images/content/JimmyChoo1.jpg
art deco-ish and the pale blue ;)

I prefer natural light myself, the less flash the better, but unfortunately it’s not always possible.

@Lillindy: Can you believe just trolling the internets?!

@Kirk Elliott: This is great affirmation…especially coming from a professional photographer! Thank you!

@Mrs. Penguin: You’re right, the more you like them the more you’re at ease and forgiving!

@mrspaetz: Your photog sounds like real photojournalist…a fact that will result in amazing pictures for you!! Lucky you!! And, wow, thanks for thinking of me–those shoes are soooooo perfect! Art deco, perfect color, perfect shape!! Thank you for sharing!

@TechGirl: True, flashless is not always possible!! But they talked about a light sticke…not sure how that would work in action shots.

@purpleHaze79: Fingers crossed! Hope you’re right! :)

how exciting to have your own paparazzi at your wedding…and not the creepy “rent your own paparrazi” kind ;)

Their work is just phenomenal! His experience with capturing celebs will really guarantee you some great photojournalistic shots. I bet he is also really good at shooting from the background as well!
