The Hunt For a Bridesmaid Dress

February 17th, 2009 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Apple Cider

I am really excited to share with you my ideas for bridesmaids dresses. There are so many I love, but these are the ones we are hunting down.

ac1
They are by Priscilla of Boston and come in so many wonderful colors!

ac2
This is my sisters favorite dress!

My bridesmaids and I made a stop by Bella Bridesmaid in Charlotte and got sucked in to a few other great dresses as well. This Vera Wang dress looked amazing on all of the girls.

The quality of the Priscilla of Boston dresses and Vera Wang dresses blew me away. They were great! We then decided to make the trek over to David’s Bridal, and we tried on quite a few dresses, including these:

The decision between long dresses and short dresses is haunting me. I think that these from David’s are very similar to the Priscilla of Boston dresses, although the quality isn’t great. We also tried on these two dresses at another boutique that I love!

Below are the David’s Bridal dresses.

What do you think? Which do you like the most?

I love the Priscilla of Boston ones….but since my BMs tried those on I know they can be kind of pricey. The David’s Bridal ones look like a great substitute.

My bridesmaids are wearing the Davids Bridal one in watermelon! I absolutely loved them (and you can’t beat the price!!!). After being in more weddings that I can remember and having to pay loads of money for a dress I only wore once, I didn’t want to put my maids through the same thing.

It’s a great substitute I think.

Just a heads up, in case you love the Priscilla dresses but can’t swing the prices….My girls chose Vineyard dresses (part of the Priscilla family) and we ordered thru Pearl’s Place (pearlsplace.com)….it was $50 cheaper. Exact same dresses! I actually also ordered my wedding gown (Nicole Miller) thru Pearl’s Place and got it for $500 less…it came in the original garment bag with all the tags and everything. 100% legit!

What is the price difference between the priscilla and david’s dresses? I like both of the those the most and I would leave it to your bridesmaids which they want to buy.

I’m partial to P of B, but it’s great that there’s an affordable option that looks so similar as well!

I’d always LOVED that deep purple Vera…so elegant! I’m sure it’s not the most economical option, but I think it’s fabulous, especially if you have tall, willowy bridesmaids!

I’m really liking the Priscilla of Boston dresses and the black and white floral!

I’ve always loved those Vera dresses. They are so beautiful. If you’re having a formal wedding, I’d go with those in a heartbeat. I also like the POB dresses, but I prefer long dresses. :) Good luck in your search!

if you’re having anything but a winter evening wedding go with the short.
the priscilla and david’s dresses are similar enough that i think going with the David dresses makes the most sense (unless of course money is not an issue for any of your BMs… in which case go POB for the quality).
if your sister is your MOH she could definitely get away with that dress she loves while the other girls wear the DB dress… it’s all very complimentary
love the colors you’re picking too!

I LOVE the Vera Wang! If my bridesmaids were willing to pay for that, I would have chosen it in a heartbeat!

I’m struggling with the same thing! I love PoB bc my dress is from there and well it’s so nice but then Vera is Vera… ahhh

Just a heads up on the PoB–they take a LONG time to come in! My maids ordered Melissa Sweet dresses (a PoB line) on Jan. 18 and I got a call from the boutique last week saying “the dresses will be here no later than June 5.” Whoa! That still gives me plenty of time, but it is a looooong wait.

I love the purple and gold Priscilla of Boston dresses! The earrings in your first inspiration board are adorable, too - are those from Etsy?

If you like the David’s dresses as much as the PoB ones, perhaps you could leave the choice to your girls. You might be surprised with what they choose - they could be willing to splurge on the more expensive dresses if they love the quality and how they look in them!

And I agree that short dresses are best - very whimsical and sweet, and they seem to fit the feel of your location better than long dresses!

I love the long deep purple Vera Wang! I wish I would have asked my girls to wear that dress!

I think something like this can be heavily influenced by the difference in cost, as well as by whether your girls realistically plan to wear the dresses again.

If they plan to wear them again, and the cost is within their reach, the non-DB gowns are gorgeous!

I LOVE the first one by Princilla of Boston, but drifts is right…the DB dresses are just as pretty and way more affordable!

All of these are gorgeous. What are the price points? I second the recommendation to try Pearl’s Place; they can get it in for you at a good price, and our Jim Hjelm bm dresses came in about 2 months earlier than expected.

I’m wearing the gold Priscilla of Boston for my sister’s wedding. I think the David’s Bridal ones are a great substitute, but if your bridesmaids don’t mind splurging, I am a huge fan of the Priscilla dresses.

I am using a Melissa sweet dress for my bridesmaids and it is a lot pricier than other places, but my bridesmaids actually picked it. They figured they’d be spending over 100 on a dress, why not pay extra and buy a dress they love and that they can wear again.

I’d get opinions from your bridal party on what they are more concerned with.

I actually wore that gold brocade Priscilla of Boston dress when I was maid of honor at my best friend’s wedding. It looks so fantastic! Gorgeous color, fabric, and style. And I KNOW I can wear it again - for real - at a cocktail party or fancy wedding!

Oh, the Vera Wang is so lovely! But that gold one your sister likes is gorgeous, too! I think the DB ones don’t look as nice…not because they’re DB, but because the others have better fabric, perhaps?

Do you have a fabric preference? I love those Priscilla dresses. The DB are a nice less-expensive alternative.

The Vera is SPECTACULAR; otherwise if you want to go short I’d say the first group you posted (Priscilla).

If any of your bridesmaids are “bootylicious,” I’d avoid the DB short dresses. We tried them on for my cousin/BFF’s wedding and I looked great in it, but my other cousin who has quite the badunkadunk, did not. It only accentuated her assets and not in a flattering way! I’d have all the girls try it on before I decided to go with that one!

I got my dress from Priscilla of Boston, so one of my Bmaids went with me to try on dresses there and we tried on the “crumb catcher” one that you have pictured - although it looks great on those models, my petitie size A-breasted maid looked totally ridiculous. I know it was bigger size, but we used clips and she could just not fill out the top area so we nixed it.

I would seriously ask your bridesmaids as to if they would honestly wear any of these dresses again. If they really would I would get the nicer quality dresses, if they aren’t sure go with the David’s Bridal. Looking at the pictures they all look so similar. I know my bridesmaids really appreciated getting a huge say in the dresses. Besides when it comes to needing help on other wedding projects nothings better then happy bridesmaids ready to return a favor! :)

I really love your sis’s favorite (that’s my favorite of the above dresses!) What does the budget look like? Actually, the David’s Bridal ones are quite chic. I’d be interested in peeping at them in person. Great post.

They all look beautiful, but not every girl can afford the more expensive ones. I would feel uncomfortable asking a BM to pay for something she can’t really afford. Have you thought about just deciding on a certain dress color and letting them pick each dress? I know some brides don’t like having different style dresses or slightly different colors but I think it can actually look really cool and unique.

I like the Boutique dress! Very classy looking and would add definite flair to the wedding. Plus they could wear it again!

my BM’s are wearing the gold brocade dress that your sister likes, and it looks gorgeous on them. They picked it out themselves while we were we out shopping for my dress, and I approved immediately! It picks up the soft lighting candlelight that we’lll be having PERFECTLY, and totally fits in with our vintage chic wedding in green, gold, and ivory. One of my BM’s already said that she knows the next event she’ll be wearing it to after my wedding, so that was great to hear!

I wore the gold brocade Pricscilla dress at my friend’s wedding and it looked really nice on everyone in the bridal party. I felt that it was a little pricey and not incredibly comfortable at a summer outdoor wedding, but everyone looked amazing. Now it just chills in my closet looking like drapes… maybe I’ll pull it out for a Christmas party next year!

I’m having the Priscilla of Boston style custom-made, to better match my colors and budget. So I’m biased, but it’s a great style! The David’s Bridal version looks nice, but the Vera Wang is stunning!!!
