Let US Eat Cake… Finally!!

I started contacting Chicago-area bakeries for our wedding cake last September. A whole year ahead of our wedding. I know that this was definitely a faux pas, and that picking your cake need not happen earlier than 6 months before your wedding. But the anticipation of the array of cake flavors and frosting in front of me was too much for me to handle. I also like how on wedding shows, the bakers just sit and sketch the cake so easily, like creating the likeness of a bride’s dream cake was just another day at the office. What would they create for us?!

Beyond stuffing my face, there were other reasons I wanted to get in touch with these bakers.

For starters, since I’m an avid home baker, I’ve been asked nonstop since out engagement if I am going to make my own cake. Umm, no. I’ll take a pass on that one. But I know that we’re expected to have an amazing cake. Which brings me to reason number two for nailing down the cake… budget!

Cakes are so labor intensive. I’ve worked with fondant and have made very simple cakes. Pastry chefs earn every penny for the amount of work they put into a single cake. But just because it’s worth the dollars, doesn’t mean that we can afford it. We have stick to our bottom line. And we’re using the black and white damask cake as an inspiration.

I’ve rounded up our top finds for great pastry chefs that fall within our budget. While there are so many more amazing bakeries in the Chicago-area (Cake Girls, Bleeding Heart Bakery, etc), I know that unfortunately they won’t be creating our cake. Here are a few of the front runners:

Le Royale Icing
I like the thought of working with Le Royle Icing because they’re located in Oak Park, where our wedding and reception will be. While their website may not be as shiny and new as some of the trend-setters in the city, Margaret Lastick has been making cakes for over 20 years and has had an illustrious career. She quoted us a price over email but we didn’t get into specifics of what it would look like, so I’m really just going on hope that we can afford her.

The Sugar Syndicate
Cathay Rayhill’s attention to detail is amazing. Her portfolio speaks for itself, and she’s conveniently located on the north side of Chicago not far from where I live, so I could just walk to the tasting. How fabulous. From the pricing I saw in September (which may have gone up), we could probably pull this off for just $100 over budget. Not too shabby.

Sugar Bliss
A cupcake boutique located downtown, they are just too adorable, and with cupcakes at $40/dozen, that would put us far under budget. I could go either way on cupcakes. They’re really cute, but we’d definitely want to have a small cake for cutting. The great thing about cupcakes is that you can easily do a few different flavors… and, well, they’re fun!

Amy Beck Cake Design
Amazing! But sadly just a little out of our reach… unless we want a teeny, tiny little cake. It would, of course, be beautiful, but tiny! Since our budget seems to be expanding minute by minute, padding the cake budget probably won’t happen. A girl can dream, though.

Anyone else out there have any suggestions for more modern wedding cakes at a vintage budget? Right now we’re going to probably start with Le Royale Icing, as the price seemed to be the best, and they’re a local Oak Park vendor. I don’t think our cake should have to take a trek out of the city if it can instead only travel a few blocks!

Now, how am I going to continue holding myself back from that aforementioned cake tasting, you ask?! We’ve finally settled on a cake topper, thanks to Etsy’s Goose Grease. By this time next month we should have our fabulous custom cake topper in our hands and that will lead us to our tasting immediately, mark my words. Oooh, I’m so excited! I have such great plans for those mini-mes!

Check the Chicago Board - I recently posted several of the local wedding cake bakeries we looked at, and none of them overlap with yours! My #1 recommendation would be Vanille Patisserie, and she was very reasonably priced for the amount of cake awesomeness she delivered!

There is always the sheet cake trick! Especially if you have a big guest count, you can save so much money by having the same cake (just not decorated) hiding in the kitchen to also be served.

I contacted our baker over a year before our wedding! The cake was one of the most exciting parts of our wedding planning and I couldn’t resist! We even did the tasting right away :)

Ooh, when you go to Sugar Syndicate, try Ruth and Phil’s ice cream (in the same shop, Sweet Collective). It’s so yummy and the girl who makes it from scratch is a friend of mine!

I went on a cupcake crawl of Chicago bakeries a couple of years ago with one of the local magazines. Swedish Bakery was yummy and Southport Grocery makes the best basic vanilla cupkake, but Sensational Bites had my favorite flavors. That may or may not be helpful for wedding cakes, but may be a yummy idea for research!

I’m a fellow 19th Century Club bride and we’re just going with Reuter’s, the bakery that partners with the caterer. Did you look into Reuter’s too and rule them out early in the process?

I had been doing some research on other bakeries (Alliance Bakery, Le Royale, Cafe Selmarie), but Reuter’s seemed like the most convenient option since we can forgo the cutting fee. We haven’t had our tasting yet, though. Fingers crossed!

Free advice from another Chicago damask bride: Try TipsyCake or Bittersweet-both have websites. Make sure to check out TipsyCake’s photos. They can bake up a cake for 150 people (sans fondant) for $500-$600. Take the Cake is AWESOME, but PRICY. (and I love Bleeding Heart & Cake Girls too, but also PRICY!) Be warned though, Naomi of TipsyCake is a little eccentric! BUT, she does a dozen delicious cupcakes (think carrot or a light banana w/ cream cheese frosting) for just $25! We are doing the above flavors from TipsyCake plus a dozen vegan cupcakes. And for Miss Perfume–Bittersweet has delicious macarons–try them when you’re in the Chi next! Btw, I LOVE the cake you show above, Stiletto!

I don’t know how much the cake would be, but Oak Mill Bakery is amazing! If you go there, try their fruit tarts. I’m addicted.

@hellopanda:
Actually no one told me about the Reuter’s connecting with 19th Century Club, but that’s probably because they outsourced catering after we’d already signed our contract for the reception.

Check out Le Royale Icing - she gave me a great quote via email with (very) basic information I had given her, and she’s been in the business for years…I’m just unsure if she’ll match the vibe I’m going for.

@eileen marie:
That’s intersting about Tipsy Cake. I’d read mixed reviews about them/Naomi so I was unsure. Some were rave reviews, some mentioned their cakes falling apart, or the orders not being right. My big pet peeve was that she wouldn’t get me any pricing until I booked a tasting….which you have to pay for! I hate not knowing prices before making a commitment!

The cake toppers are so cute!!! I don’t think we’re having any but I’m surprising my FI with a grooms cake of a penguin!! He got me a penguin stuffed animal and we’ve been in love with them ever since ;-) They only find one mate for their lifetime!

@LzzNYC:
Oooh…THANK YOU. I had been debating doing a groom’s cake if I can swing it $$-wise as a surprise for Mr. Stiletto…but I didn’t even know what I’d do.

Duh! He LOVES penguins. Thanks for the idea :)

Thanks for the recommendation on Le Royale! I think the ship might have sailed on Reuter’s already because I just sealed the envelope with the signed contract inside. But maybe I can keep Le Royale in mind for future special occasions - my sister-in-law lives in Oak Park and has a birthday coming up. Looking forward to seeing how your cake search turns out!

After several weeks last year of research on Chicago cupcakes, I actually found Sensational Bites has the best taste vs. price on cupcakes. Plus they are really nice. In addition to checking out Tipsy Cake, others that are more budget friendly and supposedly tasty and creative are Take the Cake and Luscious Layers. My friends used Luscious Layers for their wedding out in Lisle and it was this awesome Super Mario Themed Cake. So they can do some pretty cool stuff.

I love The Sugar Syndicate! Cathay created the PS3 cake as our groom’s cake and it tasted fabulous. At the time she offered the gingerbread cake that was divine. We recently went back to order a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary and it did not disappointment. Good luck with your search!
