About Mrs. Cheese

Progress Is Made

February 18th, 2009 @ 5:22 pm by Mrs. Cheese

I promised to tell you more about the tent in the street, didn’t I? After the bridal fair, I finally got around to dealing with the “where shall we seat people” quandary. See, while we have almost two acres of land around and behind our house, much of it is wooded, and none of it is level. Okay, some of it is level, but it’s only 10 feet wide… and 60 feet long. No, thanks.

In a not-so-mature moment, I lost my sh*t and cried all over my loving fiance, who flexed his problem-solving muscles (you know, the ones that get bigger when girls cry) and suggested that we put a tent in the street. Um, what? Hey, that just might work! Because of the odd configuration of our street, the fact that we live just at the apex of the hilly street, and the fabulousness of our neighbors, it actually seemed like a viable option.

After a quick call to the city’s Special Events Department — a quick laugh at our plan and some delighted voices made me feel better about it — we were just about set.

The fabulous Jeff at All Occasions Party Rentals was kind enough to come out to our house to take a look, and after gamely holding back his shock at our plan, helped me figure out how to put an 80 ft by 20 ft tent in the street.

And thus it was settled.

1

If there were a tent set up, it would be right smack in the middle of where I’m standing to take this picture. Oh, and in the spring, not fall. Whateva. You get the picture (wocka, wocka!).

I dropped by their showroom the other day to confirm that our plates and flowers worked well with the linens he recommended (in this wacky color called poppy that is surprisingly versatile). See for yourself:

Check, check, and check (tent, tables and chairs, linens).

For those keeping score, we’ll be renting one 80×20 ft tent, 3 four light globe chandeliers, 12 six foot tables for seating, 3 six foot tables for food and “other”, one round table for cakes, and 72 chairs. Give or take. We’ll use our own furniture for the bar and gift table, and provide our own twinkly lights and luminarias. Ballpark rentals estimate: $1800. Add in $200 for tableware, $200 for my dress on eBay, plus an extra $100 for random things I bought and probably won’t use, and we’re somewhere around $2300 so far. I’m not counting the extra wedding dress because I’m hoping to sell it.

Not bad. Not bad at all. In fact, I’m feeling pretty good! Next up: a food plan is created (yup, still planning to do it ourselves), and invites are purchased (at a great deal).

That is a great price on a tent! Where do you live again?

I spent that much on a much smaller tent only!

I simply cannot wait to see your wedding photos! It’s going to be so beautiful and perfect and so very YOU!

I’m going to throw a food idea out there — feel free to ignore me completely: I love the idea of a brown bag lunch … What if you used simple brown bags as “escort cards” and then guests could use these and go up to a “buffet” of lunch foods … an assortment of pre-made sandwiches, fruit, cookies, chips — think elementary school favorites … then they could take back to their tables and enjoy! Not sure if you were trying for something a little more fancy, but I imagine it could be fun!

Wow! Only $2300 so far–you are my she-ro ;) Do you have many other wedding items to add to your budget, besides the aforementioned food and invites?
How sweet of Mr. Cheese and everyone to be so supportive. Looks like you’re going to have a wonderful wedding!

We have to rent all the items for our reception, since it’s in a modern art gallery. So, every fork, chair cushion and napkin has to be brought in — it’s a lot to think about, and I commend you on your organization!

fyi, the street-tent is what they do in Jordan. I went to my friend’s wedding there last winter, and there were two street-tents–one for the women and one for the men. If it works, it works! Good luck.

I can’t wait to see the photos of how everything comes together….because I think I’m going to be envious of the tent in the street :)

… and I had my first crying breakdown in the middle of Ikea on Valentines Day. Thankful the FI flexed his fix-it muscles and found the missing items online for me. :)

@KateMW: I’m in Knoxville!

@HumarockBride: Hmmm. Not bad! We’re pretty close to locking down the food plan, but this is a sweet idea!

@Miss Meatball: Is it bad that now it’s more of a challenge to see how little I can spend than, you know, a budget?

@Shanna: The Dollar Tree! Look through my archives and you’ll see the full details. The post is called “My Secret Source.”

@ek: Thanks… this was great to hear!

@Golden139: Sorry, I missed your question the first time I read the comments! Let’s see, other than food and the invites (you’ll laugh when you find out how much — er, little — I’m spending on invites), we have to buy Mr. Cheese’s suit (which will cost twice as much as my dress, but he can wear it again)… um, that’s all I can think of, but I’m sure there’s more. Random DIY projects like signs and luminarias and a family tree, some kind of gardening work on the ceremony location and some paving of the trail getting there, and the photog ($500). I think we’ll end up just under $4k.

@JanieLeigh: Not silly AT ALL. It’s going to be a challenge. Our dear neighbors across the street will be out of town all of May and June, so we can use their driveway for parking. We own another house on the same street that can also be used for parking. Other than that, we’ll ask people to carpool and park along the street, taking care to make sure that residents can still get out of their driveways.

I love watching your spending unfold. I would NOT have been that brave, as I made all kinds of bad decisions throughout the process. You have great self control!
