My idea of a great date night is dinner and clearance shopping with Mr. Ballet Flat! I currently live below sea level in the suburbs near New Orleans, where I make maps all day, everyday for my job. Taking Some Shortcuts…

February 18th, 2009 @ 2:22 pm by Mrs. Ballet Flat

As you can probably tell by my lack of DIY posts, I’m starting to feel a little lax in my planning lately. I remember starting my binder with all of these great DIY ideas last March. I was looking forward to my plethora of craft projects, strategically spread out throughout the upcoming 14 months of planning.

Well, I’ve kind of turned to my procrastinating side, and now to my second guessing side. Do we really need these pretty embossed envelopes, only for guests to rip them open? Do we really need to offer to make more invitations for the rehearsal dinner? Hmm…well, my cutting corners side emerged thanks to Gartner Studios.

I originally was going to buy these clear favor boxes with personalized labels and put homemade favors inside. Then I thought, how many people will look at my homemade treats and truly appreciate them? I remember attending a wedding last year, and noticing all the neglected favors. I appreciated how cute they were, and yep, I took 3 home! However, there were whole bunches leftover as we left. I felt bad for the bride and groom. I know they spent a good bit of time making them perfect for their big day.

So, here emerges my second guessing side.

Our favors have morphed into these favor boxes with Mr. BF’s and my favorite candies in the boxes. (My apologies for the blurry picture. This is what Gartner Studios has on their website!!)

The labels will say something cheesy and cute… I can’t help it!! “Enjoy a few of our favorite things.” A sort of play off of The Sound of Music’s song. These are a really cute substitution, in my opinion, and shouldn’t take so long to make!

I wanted to offer to help FMIL Ballet Flat with rehearsal dinner invites, but, well, I’m busy with our invites and other projects right now. I just wanted to make things simpler here. As Mr. BF and I were perusing Target for our weekly clearance shopping date, I noticed these teal and brown Letter Impress invitations for $35 for a box of 50. We suggested these to my FMIL, and we offered to pick them up for her to look at. Wouldn’t you believe the VERY next day, they were on CLEARANCE for half off!! SCORE! (Once again, apologies for the blurry picture.)

Have you noticed yourself feeling the crunch and taking some shortcuts in your wedding planning?

YES OMG YES. I make list upon list upon list of things I need and want to do and I just don’t do them :) It’s tough balancing work/life/being a good fiance with DIY and wedding planning!!!

so you’re sending the rehearsal dinner invitation separately from the main invitation? could you tell us a little more about that idea (i have never heard of it and am intrigued)??

@ABL: Well, #1, the wedding is being hosted by Mr. BF and I, with my parents. The rehearsal dinner is being hosted by Mr. BF’s parents. So, I would think since there are different hosts, the invitations should be sent out separately. That’s my thinking behind it. :)

I wanted to DIY everything, but I’ve since realized that shipping everything back to the US will cost A LOT! So I’ve had to pick and choose my projects. But I’m still working on some of them!

Ha Ha. It’s like you’re reading my mind these days Miss BF. And like you, that other voice emerged recently that said “Do you really need to have that at your wedding?” When thumbing through all my projects and ideas. The good news is, that’s the same voice that has helped me relax about expectations in general, and I am glad to have reconnected with it, since I started to lose hold of reality a few months ago when I was knee deep in planning!

Awesome invites — I can’t believe they were on sale… and wonder why that design wasn’t at MY Target!!!

I’ve trimmed a LOT of extras from my plan. The stress just isn’t worth it!

I wouldn’t call it second guessing, so much as making sensible decisions!

We’re at the same point of planning as you, and I’m now finding that all those little things I vaguely thought of a year ago … I just don’t care about now.

I completely agree with you on the favors…sometimes I feel like I’m wasting my time! I’m still trying to decide between going with the original idea (making buckeye candies) or something easier (store bought candy!)….decisions, decisions.

Absolutely! I think the candles would be fine and cute. Or, something edible always seems to be a hit!

I say, if you’re feeling stressed, cut things like these that are less important to you!

We didn’t do favors but treated all of our out of town guests to a killer welcome bag. I think by the end of the night, your wedding guest will be lucky if they grab their shoes on the way out, let alone a perfectly packaged goodie box! Then again, it’s always nice to snack on something sweet in the car ride home. Enjoy the diy! That was by far my favorite part of the planning process.

I have those invites and I need more! You wouldn’t happen to know where they might be sold, would you? I bought mine on clearance as well at TJ MAXX and I can’t more ANYWHERE! Thanks in advance if you have any assistance.

I’ll take whatever I can get! I’m thinking I might even need another box or two… Or perhaps, I need to tell my mother to stop inviting the planet! :)
